Pigo··on Azure has an edge over AWS at big companies, Goldman Sachs survey says
I'm not managing anything near what you, and many people on here, do in your job. But from the perspective of a developer who has worked with several cloud platforms, Azure and Devops make the barrier for entry very easy, and the functionality available keeps growing.

For personal stuff I like using Firebase, but that's just because it's free. I just feel like you get what you pay for with Azure, and even for a small team like mine, someone at MS has always gotten back to us quickly when we need them.

Pigo··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
I've read a lot of reports that most of the big cities in California are going downhill hard. I'm nowhere near informed enough to have an opinion on these complex issues, but the constant reports of "state of emergency" and "poop patrols" make me angry for the people who live there.

It's ponderous how some of the wealthiest cities in the world can't manage themselves. How do they not sweep out the current administration, and bring in people willing to change things?

Pigo··on Philosophy of Ghost in the Shell (2012)
Yeah, I'm definitely not trying to begrudge what other people like. Some people might not like a movie that is mostly cerebral. The art and action of GITS is almost secondary to the concept it's exploring. I've seen quite a lot of anime that looked fun and interesting, it just wasn't something I could get into.

It may also be that a lot of anime are series, and require a time investment.

Pigo··on Philosophy of Ghost in the Shell (2012)
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely check them out. Maybe it's my age, but a lot of what I have seen like Deathnote or even the GITS SAC didn't click with me. Cowboy Bebop was just fun, and I forgot I was watching an anime.

I think maybe it's the high-concept, almost frightening, aspects of GITS that resonated with me. But I understand why it's not popular with most people.

Pigo··on How scientists across three continents produced an Ebola vaccine
So you just learn, or have the ability, to not think about it?
Pigo··on How scientists across three continents produced an Ebola vaccine
When I hear what you medical guys go through, I realize how not cut out I am for it. I wish I was, because it is very fascinating and important to all of us. But I almost got faint just picturing what you described.

Would you describe your motivation to help that man as being a factor of great empathy for his situation or cold detachment from him as a person? I'm not trying to degrade him as a person, but I'm curious how you learn to cope with the realities of certain people's bodies.

Pigo··on Philosophy of Ghost in the Shell (2012)
The original Ghost in the Shell has been one of my favorite films since the first time I seen it. To be honest, there's no other anime I've seen that I actually enjoyed apart from the Cowboy Bebop movie. So I don't consider myself a anime fan. The original GITS is a brilliant film that is beyond a specific genre.
Pigo··on How scientists across three continents produced an Ebola vaccine
The account of the German researcher pricking her finger with a needle containing the Ebola virus... Oh man, that's terrifying. It's very reassuring to hear the vaccine worked out for her.
Pigo··on Evidence that the key assumption made in discovery of dark energy is in error
This is one of the most important things I learned from Star Trek. The beginning of wisdom is "I don't know".

Pigo··on Anna Wiener on her book “Uncanny Valley”
The wsj does seem to not cater as much to opinion pieces or clickbait titles. I guess that's what I was asking. I get plenty of opinions and editorials for free these days, I don't want to pay for that even if I agree with them. I miss the outlets that seemed to focus on straight up news.

We had a local paper in my area, The Western Star, that ran for 206 years. It was the last source that I was really dedicated to, because I cared a lot more about local.

Pigo··on Anna Wiener on her book “Uncanny Valley”
I actually am willing to pay for journalism, but it becomes a constant research project to find out what source isn't on a biased agenda crusade. Any recommendations on pure journalism source I should check out?
Pigo··on Anna Wiener on her book “Uncanny Valley”
Thanks, I truly didn't know if people really understood how bad it can be for new users. If you go to these sites with blockers and extensions, I'm sure it's fine, so they would think I'm exaggerating. I'm on a new machine from work, so I'm seeing some things from an average user's perspective.
Pigo··on Anna Wiener on her book “Uncanny Valley”
I will check that out, don't believe I've heard of it.

I can utilize tools like these to make things easier for myself. But this view is what the average new reader experiences, it's surprising that they don't care more about that.

Pigo··on Anna Wiener on her book “Uncanny Valley”
It's so aggravating going to these news sites. It's almost as bad as the days of search bars installed in your browser. I'm not on the biggest screen in the world, but I can't even see the title of the article. https://i.imgur.com/UYT7qpN.png

I've been to plenty of other sites just as bad too. It instantly kills my desire find the article and read it.

Pigo··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
I agree. I was just joking. I've been enjoying biking more the past year especially. There's some really great bikes these days.
Pigo··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
You're talking to people who sit in front of computers most of the day, lol
Pigo··on Chrome OS has stalled out
Yeah, I guess I used sandbox incorrectly, the apps are still running in a sandbox. What I meant was before Crostini, you had to load xfce in a shell or dual boot into it. Now the Linux apps run inside the Chrome OS. You also don't have to boot into a developer mode, or anything like that.
Pigo··on Chrome OS has stalled out
I knew what I was getting into with my Pixelbook when I bought one in 2015, they are a lot more than every other Chromebook. But I thought it would be fun, and the $900 was less than I'd spend on some of my other devices.

All I would say is that thing still still runs and looks like it did the day I bought it. It's a solid device that runs everything through the usb-c port (which was still new back then). The specs are overboard for what a Chromebook needs. But like most things, I guess it just comes down to what you use it for.

Now that it has a built-in Linux support, I could do things that might push it. I was surprised when it got Crostini support, you run the Linux apps inside the Chrome OS and not some buggy sandbox.

Pigo··on A Restaurant with No Leftovers
I find a lot of the bags and boxes I'm forced to use annoying. I buy one thing at the pharmacy and they print out a receipt that is sometimes 8 feet long (dead serious) and put it all in a bag that I would immediately throw away. I tell them I don't need the bag, but I'm still stuck with these ridiculous receipts full of coupons I don't care about. Purely from an annoyance standpoint, this bothers me a great deal.

I know the company/cashiers assume it's expected of them, but to me it's like the gallon sized drinks at fast food chains. It aggravates me that anyone thinks it's necessary.

The Amazon packing and boxing situation is a whole other level of annoying.

Pigo··on How Canada's military reacted to seeing Pokemon Go players trespassing
It's been so long since I played, obviously, I can't remember all the terminology. I had another green player destroy my base link (whatever it was called - my oldest link) because it was in his way. He could have reached out to me and I might have given him the okay. So I was real mature about it, I caused a scene in the world chat and rage-quit.
Pigo··on Hard deadlines are not user-first
I'm sure I don't have the wealth of experience you fine people have. But I've been in enough teams and companies to see that whatever methodology is being embraced, it seemed like the X factor was always what kind of people are practicing it. If someone likes always being in meetings, you're going to be in a lot of meetings. If you're on a team with smart people you enjoy working with, with open lines of communication, then the rest just seems to fall into place as long as everyone is doing their job.

Then again I never worked for Hooli.

Pigo··on Xiaomi camera playing on Google home hub sends stills from other people's homes
We recently got a roborock for christmas, which I love btw. From what I recall some of the features of the app still say they're in beta, and they made it very clear. I'm not saying it makes it okay, but I'm curious if this part of the issue.

What bugs me is having to add a new app integration to my Home every time someone buys us a smart device or light. A few cheaper brands I returned immediately after seeing how janky the app and setup were, and also because I wanted to minimize the number of integrations when possible.

Pigo··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
Of course not, because extremism is on the rise according to this article...

If they got one whiff of what the wild west days were like, they'd be writing their Congressmen. They couldn't shame corporations into taking down sites they disagree with.

Pigo··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
I just read that comment before seeing yours, ha.

Well they both seem to work the election of Trump into every article. You can't drum up traffic and ad dollars without adding that into the conversation.

Pigo··on The old internet died and we watched and did nothing
I do pine for the days when the Undernet or Dalnet was bustling with activity. I'm always looking for a server worth hanging out on. I'm glad Freenode is doing good, but it's people working.

That said, this article was exactly what I'd expect for an article from Buzzfeed.

Pigo··on Stone Age chewing gum holds clues to the life of a girl who lived 5700 years ago
There's a lot of images on the article, but most of them seem to be links to other articles. Was that slideshow specific to this article? The first image seemed to be a skull that was completely unrelated.
Pigo··on Stone Age chewing gum holds clues to the life of a girl who lived 5700 years ago
I guess it was naive of me, but I was really hoping for an image of the girl. Even a reasonable guess can be pretty interesting sometimes.

When you see that image of what King Tutankhamun most likely looked like, it's kind of jarring.

Pigo··on Dog insurer: 'jumping, running, slipping, tripping, playing' not covered (2016)
I don't really care as a whole, I'm glad there's a stop gap for the people who would genuinely need this. My complaint is mostly the people I know personally who are doing this. Both families are not broke, and could be doing better if the father actually worked.

The ambulance rides do tie up the system however. I have a cousin who is an EMT and between rescuing overdoses he has regulars they have to taxi because they have a cold, or something else trivial. There is public transportation, but even that would cost them personally and requires waiting. It's probably better to let a few selfish people take advantage of the system in the long run, but it amazes me how selfish some people can be when there's people in real need out there.

Pigo··on Here’s the story of a game I made in 1994, when I was 12
I still Paint.NET a lot on my windows devices. That's funny to see the guy who authored it with a Rick & Morty avatar.
Pigo··on Cheating in Programming
I like to roam around the projects I use the most on Github and see if there's a bug I can work on, or someway to help out, when I have the time. It took me too long to realize that I could help open source projects out without being the chief architect at Microsoft, or have a well established coding blog, etc...
