Pigo··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
I'm definitely seeing a lot more politics on here lately. I still come here after all these years to get a break from politics.

Gladly, I have
Pigo··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Just getting in I faced extremely rude border agents, which was just confusing. If it hadn't been for work I would have just gone home. There were some nice people, but I felt a general unfriendliness most places I went. Maybe it was just my experience.
Pigo··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Trips to Canada have always left a bad taste in my mouth, but they've always been to Ontario, Quebec. I've been wondering if I'd like the people in Alberta better.
Pigo··on Making
I've been trying to rebuild my back deck this summer. I've wasted so much material, cut myself several times, and I was stung by a paper wasp, it has not been going well so far.
Pigo··on Medici family mystery may be solved after more than 400 years

Pigo··on Show HN: Follow London Trains in 3D
I'd assume there's better options, but I've worked a lot with cesium. Even it has some interesting visualizations, textures, even weather you can add with it. Anything that could make it feel more immersive would just be cool in my opinion. That just sounds like fun to me.

This is a fun idea and interesting implementation. I know there's only so much an api can give you, but I'd love to see anything that gives more information or visuals of the surroundings.
Pigo··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
I'm always wondering how long it will take for popular sentiment to finally shift. So many years of things like Blinky the fish in the Simpsons really did a number on our shared consciousness.
Pigo··on Neil Armstrong's customs form for moon rocks (2016)
I never thought about the smell.

Does it smell strong because of it's composition or because the vacuum of space has a strange effect on it? Like the particulates not dispersing enough?

Pigo··on The Problem with AI Welfare
Just because you fell in love with an AI, doesn't mean it loves you back.
Pigo··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
It's hard to argue against that. I suppose it's not that they even exist, it's just the unreasonable amount they profit on the items. If it's purely because they cannot attain items another way, they markup should be more apparent maybe? It just hurts seeing young and disadvantaged people being taken advantage of.

Still waiting on anything to be done about rent to own businesses. The businesses that rely solely on exploiting the people in a bad position bother me so much, they should at least have some kind of limits on their usury.

I just had this weird flashback to Frontpage...

Pigo··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
Everything I know and loved as a kid is disappearing. This one really hits me deep. I sincerely hope that national geographic is not disappearing on me.
Pigo··on Titanic tourist sub photos show wreckage being brought ashore
It seems likely much more effort will go into evaluating the failure than went into designing this submersible. It would be interesting to know how much more.
Pigo··on Neuropsychiatric researchers rethink what depression might be
This reminds me of how long it took me to notice a pattern in my relationships. When I look back, it's so obvious that I was picking a certain kind of person, and behaving in a certain kind of way, that would lead to the same conclusion. But it didn't feel like I was repeating the same story over and over again just to satisfy some malformed part of my psyche. I can't rewire something so deep in me that even effects who I'm attracted to. All I can do is be aware of it, and course correct.

Do you think this is because no one was profiting from your message board community? I'm sure there's several factors, but it takes people who love something to build a presence without motivation for profit.

> * The "Reddit Contrarian", waiting to snipe your post with their immense intellect

I began thinking twice before commenting on anything, and then eventually stopped. Even in the most benign subs, you can quickly escalate to Hitler if you deviate from the hive-mind.

I wouldn't just normally post to a youtube video, but this seems rather relevant https://youtu.be/YJYFlI4ytbU

That's a good rule of thumb
Pigo··on The search for extraterrestrial intelligence moves up a gear
I guess my issue is that I'm not all that interested in SETI. It would obviously be amazing if we find other life, and I'm not against funding or people searching. I just think there is plenty to investigate and learn just by studying the endless ocean of galaxies out there.
Pigo··on The search for extraterrestrial intelligence moves up a gear
It's a fair question, and I'm not educated on the subject enough to provide an opinion. Like I said, I'd just heard about this, so I'm not aware how much has gone into it. If it's hitting the figures you're talking about, I would question it as well.

My favorite is the question headlines.

Is Mexico in talks with the US about drug cartels?

Are you chicken nuggets covered in covid-19?

Is Trump ritualistically sacrificing children in the oval office?

They're leaving it up in the air, so you can't call them on writing garbage they barely try to back up.

Pigo··on Contagion’s Screenwriter on Watching His Movie Go Viral
I would rather get covid-19 than have to endure another conversation about the federal government and the current administration's handling of it.
Pigo··on Design like it’s 1999
Many of the people here on HN probably work at much larger corporations than I, so my take might be different. But what I have noticed is a severe lack of interest in hiring UI/UX people. Earlier in my career I had access to at least one UX person I could team up with before starting a new app.

There are some great ui libraries you can leverage these days, and they seem to fool some management into thinking pretty equals well designed. Eventually I end up in a series of meetings where we decide the aesthetics by committee. They don't seem to appreciate that a dedicated person could do it faster and better. But they always ignore my request for such a role.

I recall Hubble often being fodder for late night hosts and other media, but we don't even think about it now that it's proved it's worth many times over. It changed the narrative once it was operational.
Pigo··on Why some governments appear not to be acting on the Covid-19 threat
>the virus spreading is an opportunity to fire people you couldn't fire before, get rid of an old population costing money

We have become very cynical people.

Pigo··on The search for extraterrestrial intelligence moves up a gear
Somehow I had not heard about the James Webb Space Telescope before now. The Hubble means a lot to me personally, and I have dreading the day I'd hear it was going out of service. I can't wait to see what this new telescope will provide for us.
Pigo··on Alcoholics Anonymous vs. other approaches: the evidence is now in
I've heard that part of the motivation for the escalation of opiate strength (fentanyl and carfentanil) is because so many people have begun seeing success with these new therapies. The illegal marketplace has probably been losing profits.

Maybe replacement therapy isn't perfect, but I've seen it help a lot of people who are in a bad place. I wish there was more motivation for finding exit strategies, but there doesn't seem to be any profit in that.
