Isn’t that effectively what they’re doing? They’re using their riches to pay the people with the necessary institutional knowledge to build it in the USA.

PierceJoy··on Ozempic Is Making People Buy Less Food, Walmart Says
There’s a difference between them having a record of your purchase and them accessing that record for business analysis reasons. If Walmart operated a medical clinic, would you comfortable with their corporate data scientists accessing your health records?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t allay the complaints of driving up the cost of housing for locals. I’m not sure if this is a problem for bigger cities, but there’s been increasing criticism by locals in ski towns and resort cities of remote workers coming in with much higher incomes than local companies can provide and consequently pricing out locals from housing.
PierceJoy··on Disney CEO Bob Iger says company's movies have been too focused on messaging
There are precisely zero examples of anything being shoved down someone’s throat. Unless you’re so incredibly sensitive that the mere presentation of a gay person living their life constitutes shoving homosexuality down your throat. As I said, Disney movies are boring. Everyone knows that, but it’s much easier for the CEO to vaguely hint at “messaging” than admit that they don’t know how to create entertaining movies any longer.
PierceJoy··on Disney CEO Bob Iger says company's movies have been too focused on messaging
I asked for specific examples. If it’s so obvious, it should be easy to provide a couple. If you’re so confident this is occurring, provide examples and be able to defend them. Gesturing broadly at movie titles tells me that you may be aware your position isn’t very strong.

Disney movies aren’t doing great because they’re boring, plain and simple. “Messaging” has nothing to do with it.

PierceJoy··on Disney CEO Bob Iger says company's movies have been too focused on messaging
Can you provide some specific examples of Disney movies shoving something down your throat? I see this language used frequently but have yet to see any examples of it actually occurring.
PierceJoy··on The housing shortage is larger than you think
It’s both. Tens of thousands of units are owned by individuals looking to cash in on Airbnb in any given city.
PierceJoy··on The housing shortage is larger than you think
In a perfect world, I would agree. But in reality that will never happen, and young people continue to suffer in the meantime. Housing should have never been allowed to become an investment.
PierceJoy··on The housing shortage is larger than you think
That is exactly what’s happening in many places. A new condo development went up near me, and over 80% of units were immediately purchased by investors. Not giant corporations, but local individuals buying for mainly AirBnB use.

PierceJoy··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Yep. Studies on helmet usage in skiing and snowboarding showed that as helmet usage became more common, brain injuries increased. People felt more protected and thus took more risks.

I agree that the scale is different, but even the way you’ve phrased it sounds pretty comparable to how humans learn and produce art. Besides scale, how is it different?

Why are you assuming that it’s “I” and not “everyone”? In my experience it’s the latter.

PierceJoy··on Wegovy, other weight-loss drugs scrutinized over reports of suicidal thoughts
> erectile dysfunction (which I'm sure was due to trying to push more when on the toilet)

I know pushing on the toilet is the most common cause of hemorrhoids, but I hadn’t seen it linked to ED before. Is this based on research you’ve seen, or just a suspicion you have? If the latter, curious to hear how you’ve connected those two things.

PierceJoy··on Wegovy, other weight-loss drugs scrutinized over reports of suicidal thoughts
I've been watching a lot of "Ozempic experience" YT videos recently because a family member is considering it. It seems like by far the most common side effect is a few weeks of diarrhea. After that, some nausea. Overall, I get the impression that most people tolerate it well if they can accept the diarrhea, but a small portion aren't able to get past the side effects and discontinue.

The more interesting number is that the vast majority of people who discontinue, even after long term use, regain 100% or more of the weight they lost. Weight loss doctors talk about this drug as something like statins which you'll likely need to take for the rest of your life. I think that's the area that needs the most improvement.

PierceJoy··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
The parent referred to affirmative action, not a specific case. Affirmative action is practised by many organizations in many different forms. That’s what I was replying to. If you’re genuinely interested, you can find well though out opinions on that specific case with a quick Google search.
PierceJoy··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
True, but many forms of discrimination are legal and good. Minimum age to drive is ageism, but I think we would all agree that it’s a good form of discrimination. You say “no matter how well intentioned” as if the intention isn’t important. But intention and outcome are both very important and determine whether a given form of discrimination is good or bad.
PierceJoy··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
I agree with almost everything you wrote except for the conclusion. In no way is this a third world level of care. Your statement that middle class Canadians are being forced to travel to the US to receive basic services in untrue. The situations where Canadians are travelling to the US are very few and far between and for very specialized things, like specific spinal surgery procedures. We should absolutely be doing it Canada in a timely matter, but don't blow things out of proportion.

I particularly agree with doctors doing little proactive work, but this is very doctor dependant. I've had doctors who are like this, and others who been quite proactive. I don't see what that situation would be any different in the US.

PierceJoy··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
I ctrl-f'd that link for the words "X-ray" and "Xray". No results. Please quote the part that proves I'm wrong.
PierceJoy··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
It's not terrible though. I broke a bone 6 months ago. 2 hours in the ER including x-rays. Orthopaedic surgeon consult 4 days later, including more x-rays. All at no additional cost to me.
PierceJoy··on Canada’s new tech talent strategy
> Six month wait time to get an x-ray for a hairline fracture,

This is a complete fabrication. You can get an x-ray for anything same day in any Canadian city. There is zero backlog for x-rays.

PierceJoy··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
Based on all available evidence, it is probable I am right. We have no evidence of increased rate of incidence of ALS, which you would expect to see given how many people were vaccinated.

You linked to a single case report. It does not establish any type of causal link at all. That single person was most likely going to develop ALS at the time whether he had been vaccinated or not.

PierceJoy··on Inside the Wuhan lab weeks before Covid
Very sorry about your Dad, but you have no evidence vaccination was related to his ALS. Hundred of millions of people were vaccinated in short period of time, and there is obviously a group of people who were always going to develop ALS within that time frame. Given the large n of the first group, overlap was inevitable. Temporal proximity doesn't establish causation when there's an overlap.

PierceJoy··on Xylazine, a dangerous new drug fuelling Canada’s opioid crisis
The number of deaths isn’t the whole story though. Smoking might take 20-30 years off your life. These drugs are killing people in their teens and 20s. The affects on their life are also not the same. We don’t see smokers trying to inject nicotine into rotting flesh. Nicotine is a choice that has little effect on anyone else besides second hand smoke. The drug crisis is destroying people/families/cities.
PierceJoy··on OpenAI Research Says 80% of U.S. Workers' Jobs Will Be Impacted by GPT
I don’t think anyone was telling tradespeople to learn to code. It was more like liberal arts people working at coffee shops. But even so, tradespeople should pray that white collar jobs don’t go away, because otherwise their market will explode with supply and their prices will plummet.
