Why are you assuming that it’s “I” and not “everyone”? In my experience it’s the latter.

Someone taking it upon themselves to speak for everyone and determine they know what is best for the masses isn't narcissistic?

No more so than it is to say "we should turn, so we don't run into this iceberg". Concern for the well-being of those around you is not narcissistic.
