Paianni··on Why is everything so ugly?
Chances are the pre-1980s lamps were mercury-vapour, not incandescent. Incandescent lamps were obsolete for road lighting by the 1950s. Sodium lamps caught on because they were much more efficient than both.
Paianni··on Mourning Google
Maybe, but several companies had attempted 'internet appliances' in the past and failed, Chromebooks were a risk.
Paianni··on Mourning Google
Chrome? Chrome OS? Google Docs? Those haven't been successes?
Paianni··on We will all become boring: Loneliness, liberalism, and the traditional family
Quite an engrossing article, but I'm not too keen on the author's background.
Paianni··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Maybe 'dip your light'?
Paianni··on Toyota SUV adverts banned in UK on environmental grounds
I think the 'SUVs driving through empty cities' ads are worse.
Paianni··on iPods now considered vintage tech– so of course sold out at Urban Outfitters
Reminds me of the 'lomography' fad of around 2009-2011, my younger self hankered after old cheap film cameras back then.
Paianni··on Google paid $26.3B in 2021 to be the default search engine
The difference is that the tyre manufacturers don't pay Ford to stick their tyres on Ford's vehicles.
Paianni··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
Do you have anything of value to say other than 'don't spread despair'?
Paianni··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
As if it were that simple.
Paianni··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
We don't know how to remove the incentives to wreck ecosystems.
Paianni··on Orcas that hunted alongside humans might be extinct
We can be effective stewards but the civilised world has dug a grave we don't know how to escape from.
Paianni··on USB inventor explains why the connector was not designed to be reversible (2019)
The 6-pin connector was nice. But laptops and camcorders generally had the 4-pin connector (sans power)...not so nice.
Paianni··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
I lost money on two Cherry switch boards until I got an HHKB Pro2. I feel no need to change.
Paianni··on I'm fed up with it, so I'm writing a browser
Kinda depends on who, what and where one is in the world.
Paianni··on Lidl Product Recall [pdf]
Well, our expense since we impose a system that makes this possible.
Paianni··on The end of cool small cars
Most of those are B and C-segment cars, which are holding up ok in Europe. The real collapse has been choice and availability in the A-segment. The Fiat New 500 might be the last new offering for a while.
Paianni··on Why ISO was retired (2021)
My 2010 computer (with 2012 CPUs) won't boot from USB flash drive images. So I'll be using optical media for a while yet.
Paianni··on Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator?
When I was in secondary school (UK), Casio's were readily available so they are what I have, the newest being an fx-85GT PLUS.
Paianni··on Ffmprovisr – Making FFmpeg Easier
Probably the biggest barrier to ffmpeg adoption is all the offline 'freemium' and web frontends, the host sites for which have been SEO'd for phrases people commonly put into Google like "avi to mp4", "mp3 to wav", etc..

It took me more time than I wish it did to become open to using CLI apps, the Windows world had taught me to expect a GUI for everything.

Paianni··on Google is already pushing WEI into Chromium
Looks like this has been inserted into release 117, which won't hit the stable channel for several months yet. Chromium is still the most secure GUI browser out there so I'm not in a rush to leave, especially as OpenBSD 7.4 will probably ship with 116.

If the devs/Google's intentions are truly limited largely to trying to prevent bots, then I hope they realise their folly.

Paianni··on It doesn’t take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
"build an audience on Twitter"

That aged well.

Paianni··on Fairphone 4 is coming to the US
GSM, CDMA and UMTS are all dead or on their way out in the US. In terms of LTE bands I think T-Mobile (or MVNO's depending on their network) is the sole choice.
Paianni··on Windows Update Restored: Fix Windows update on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP
PSA: Security updates for 2000 and XP are still available from Microsoft at https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/
Paianni··on Lojban: Constructed language to eliminate ambiguity from communication
It would seem Toaq was started by a former Lojbanist, interesting.
Paianni··on Wind is main source of UK electricity for first time
Your bills go up because of supplies of all sources of energy not meeting demand as well.
Paianni··on Children aged 2-6 successfully trained to acquire absolute pitch (2012)
It makes composition easier. By that I mean, I can mentally simulate music and pick out the sequence of tones to write it down in sheet music or a DAW piano roll, and I don't need to 'calibrate' my pitch beforehand.
Paianni··on Minidisc FAQ: MDLP (“Long-Play”) Mode Topics
The CD-R audio recorders that came out in 1997 made MD obsolete even before computers got involved.
Paianni··on Tech bosses are letting dictators censor what Americans see
> I know where mine came from.

I doubt it, the sources of materials and stages of manufacturing for most advanced electronics are spread all over the world. I know my motherboard was made in Taiwan, my processor from Malaysia/Germany, but that's just the start.

Paianni··on Stellantis CEO: There may not be enough raw materials to electrify globe
There's plenty of lithium around, but mining it is not clean.
