Oddskar··on A brief history of code search at GitHub
I still think the changes made to only index repos that had activity during the last year [1] was the wrong call, and potentially makes code search dangerous for those that do not understand this.

At least for me a common use case for org-wide code searches is to answer questions like "is the library x still used somewhere?"

To not have this include old potentially low-traffic repos is a very bad thing. I don't understand why they would do this for enterprise customers. Like we would pay extra to not have it be this way.

Yes its truly awful for you to be held accountable for your place of work and its impact on the world. Completely unacceptable.
Oddskar··on Google says employees flouting vaccination rules will eventually be fired
Yeah I can see that now. I honestly did not see this as a "hot take" at all; at the time of posting there was less than a handful of comments and not much engagement.

But point taken.

Oddskar··on Google says employees flouting vaccination rules will eventually be fired
> Vaccines only provide personal protection.

Herd immunity is still a thing.

Oddskar··on Uncomfortable Truths in Software Engineering
I would not call Rails “popular” in Europe at all. Some use it, sure.
Oddskar··on Hammerspoon – Lua-based powerful tool automation of macOS
Probably faster to just re-write in Lua.
Oddskar··on Hammerspoon – Lua-based powerful tool automation of macOS
I’ve never had any problem with latency when using Hammerspoon for window management.
Oddskar··on Is Web3 Bullshit?
I don't think we need to make this longer than it should:

Yes. It's bullshit.

Oddskar··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
A lot of these you can build yourself with Hammerspoon if you're on OSX. Some quick comments since I've dabbled a lot in this:

#2a Better just to have a grid that you can resize/move to using keyboard shortcuts; it's too much of a hassle otherwise. On Windows there's already split-screen support for this with Windows key + arrows for instance.

#3 I've built this in Hammerspoon and it's a lot less useful than you think. It's better to have fixed shortcuts for apps that one doesn't have to consciously think about.

#5 I have app shortcuts that does some smart things with cursor placement to make it easier switching between apps. I find this helps a lot with this. Most of the time I'm not dragging the cursor between displays at all due to this. Also helps a lot to have a shortcut for "move current focused app to x display".

Oddskar··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
It's hard to conceive a working device that is less ergonomic than a laptop. They're really not made for human anatomy. From the screen that makes you crane your neck, to the staggered terrible keyboards.

While there are certainly posters here with people that have developed for 10 years without any issues, carpal tunnel is a lot more common than people think. It's very easy to cause irreparable damage to the body when using these devices that have about zero consideration for the human body.

Oddskar··on Ideal Monitor Rotation for Programmers
You assume that there are no scenarios where you want two windows up at the same time; e.g. for comparison or quick reference.

I have a custom setup where I can quickly switch between windows and applications using keyboard shortcuts and save e.g. cursor positions.

I still prefer having the relevant material on-screen rather than switching between them. And it's due to the reason previously mentioned: for me it's faster to reference material that is on-screen at the same time rather than switching between them.

Perhaps this has something to do with the type of code bases one works with? I work quite a bit on legacy apps, where one has to reference both documentation, tests and git history (when it's of value), as well as a browser window to actually run the code. That'a already a lot of things to be switching between.

Oddskar··on Firefox is the alternative to a Chrome hegemony
Which is hilarious since extensions are clearly something Chrome barely cares about at all as is obvious from the Chrome extension page where one can’t even search for extensions to install.
Oddskar··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
What do you think makes it different from the others then? Is it the keywell?
Oddskar··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
I imagine the design challenge that Netflix faces is that they cannot keep movies forever due to publisher prices being too high, and customers are always looking for something new to watch.

Thus they have to try to make the most out of recommendations, and try to maintain a bit of an illusion that their current catalogue is bigger than it actually is.

Oddskar··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
It was very good about 5 years ago, and is still quite comfortable.

However I would say that today this has largely been superseded by a myriad of better choices. For the adventurous type there's e.g. Dactyl Manuform. If one does not care so much for the keywell there's Lily 58, Iris or Kyria. For built-in tenting there's ZSA Moonlander, Redox etc.

All of these have better customizability, repairability and portability than a Kinesis Advantage.

Want to try diffent key switches? Use hot-swap sockets.

Want wireless? Drop in a nice!nano microcontroller.

Want to create a crazy custom key layout or macros? You can do anything you want in QMK and flash it to the microcontrollers.

Oddskar··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
Could not agree more. Especially for programmers I would argue that the alphabetical character layout matters so much less than where one reaches special characters and the modifiers.

Having used a DIY columnar staggered keyboard for about a year a laptop keyboard feels like using a device that is not designed for humans.

Oddskar··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
One facet of this that rarely gets mentioned that I often experience since I live in the EU is subtitle and audio availability is teeerrible for most of the streaming services.

Amazon Prime is unusable because the vast majority of movies that they have is all dubbed and do not provide original audio nor english subtitles. I do not pay money to watch a movie get distorted by dubbed audio. No thank you.

Same goes for a lot of movies on Netflix, although they are way better than Prime.

Oddskar··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
And it would make even more sense to just pay for a VPN subscription, since they're cheaper than $4 per month.
Oddskar··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
If your money making is at the detriment of society as a whole then there very much is something wrong with it.
Oddskar··on Microsoft pushes ahead with controversial ‘buy now, pay later’ feature for Edge
Only because the Mozilla foundation spends their money doing all kinds of dumb things that no one wants.
Oddskar··on Only 90s web developers remember this (2014)
Just seeing the generated HTML is trying to figure out the blueprint of the building by looking at the facade.

Sure there's source map files, but most of the time you'll fine those aren't distributed together with the minified bundles.

Oddskar··on Insurers run from ransomware cover as losses mount
I don't think you can transfer millions of euros via Western Union and keep it anonymous. No way.
Oddskar··on Insurers run from ransomware cover as losses mount
I think you underestimate the influence corporations exert on governments.
Oddskar··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Conspicuous consumption (because that's most likely what this will be used for) is not a problem that needs to be solved.
Oddskar··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Yupp. This reeks of a bad PM that is doing everything they can do get the next promotion and completely disregarding the big picture.
Oddskar··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
If you can't afford it, then maybe don't buy it in the first place.
Oddskar··on Microsoft Edge’s new ‘Buy now, pay later’ feature is the definition of bloatware
Which makes it even more scummy to include this in a browser.
Oddskar··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
I think it depends on where you hang out. A lot of the DIY mechanical keyboard Discord communities are tremendously helpful and open to newcomers for instance.

On the flipside of that is perhaps the geekhack forums, with a ton of elitists that sometimes have little patience for people that are not up to speed.

Oddskar··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
You should try Gazzew Boba U4 Silent.

Much more pleasant sounding.

Oddskar··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
A lot of people like low profile. There's even mechanical switches for these. I think Kailh Low Profile Choc being one of the more popular ones.
