NuSkooler··on Fidonet: Technology, Use, Tools, and History (1993)
For those interested, FidoNet and "Alt nets" such as fsxNet are still going and active!
NuSkooler··on The limits of Rust, or why you should probably not follow Amazon and Cloudflare
I've now worked with 3 teams that have moved from Python (2/3) and C++ (1/3) to (async) Rust. All successfully, all with less bugs, moving faster, etc.

And now we have AI.

NuSkooler··on ENiGMA½ BBS Software
Node.js based BBS software, now with built in x86 emulation ability for DOS doors and more!
NuSkooler··on Python is not a great language for data science
You could end it with "Python is not a great language".

Now, is Python a SUCCESSFUL language? Very.

NuSkooler··on Show HN: SQL++ – 5x faster than Prisma (Rust)
I don't quite understand the name. Sort of follows the "I wrote this in C++" convention of naming.
NuSkooler··on Show HN: A simple CLI tool to list network ports and their associated bin
`netstat -tnalp` ?
NuSkooler··on Show HN: I made Confetti: a configuration language file format
I'm still a fan of HJSON, and JSON5 looks quite nice, but this does as well. That's all I can really say. There are so many choices, but looks like you did really well on this one.
NuSkooler··on Ask HN: Would you fund Mozilla to become independent of Google?
Yes.
NuSkooler··on Banning TikTok Is Unconstitutional. The Supreme Court Must Step In
The Supreme Court is bought and paid for by the group that wants to <s>ban</s> likely take over. So, regardless of what your thoughts on TikTok are, it's mostly all irrelevant.
NuSkooler··on Employees are bypassing HR, sharing on LinkedIn
Love every bit of this type of stuff that mostly only the younger generations are doing. Maybe someday, our society will move away from slaving away in terrible environments to realistically only raise up a handful of humans.
NuSkooler··on Party Squasher, the first guest occupancy counter for homes
Gross.

NuSkooler··on Is A.I. Art Stealing from Artists? (2023)
These discussions continue to come up, and I feel like it's wasting time on the wrong issues.

Is AI *borrowing concepts* from artists? Yep. Do artists borrow concepts from other artists? Yep. Is AI or humans in a vacuum when creating new art? Nope. Is the cat out of the bag? Yep. Is this the same with text? Code? Literally anything AI generates? Yep.

A major problem is AI being used to replace humans, which of course, is borrowing concepts from humans... which, oops, you just replaced. It's not just artists.

We have much bigger issues than "AI is stealing my art". It's really not. It's just being used to "optimize" you, the human, out of the equation.

NuSkooler··on "Firefox added [ad tracking] and has already turned it on without asking you"
The suggestion to switch to Chrome is pretty rich. Firefox is more privacy conscious Chrome even with this enabled.
NuSkooler··on First Contact with SQLite
"I completely misunderstand the purpose of SQLite, so here are some rants"
NuSkooler··on Anna's Archive Faces Millions in Damages and a Permanent Injunction
I've been trying to convince people of this for years. The problem is from my view, that people have the idea of IP being some sort of the American Dream ingrained in their heads that they can't even reason about anything else.
NuSkooler··on FILE_ID.DIZ Description (1994)
I wrote a article on the history of this stuff a while back you may enjoy: https://l33t.codes/2020/12/10/Retro-standards-part-1-file-de...
NuSkooler··on Jeff Geerling: Corporate Open Source Is Dead
TL;DR: Once again, capitalism takes it's toll.
NuSkooler··on Beware of Base64 Encoded Strings
Beware of !rtfm
NuSkooler··on Suicide is on the rise for young Americans, with no clear answers
No clear answers? Maybe you should ask some of them. The younger generations are constantly talking about it - while the older generations are constantly talking about it as well, just from a different perspective.

People are tired of capitalism reducing them to numbers that the powers that be -- now corporate interests -- give no shits about.

NuSkooler··on Introducing Kagi Search's New Design
No, it feels that way because music is a monthly service, any media is a monthly service cost, backups are monthly service cost, news are a monthly service cost, VPN is a monthly service cost, internet is of course a monthly service cost, password management is a monthly service cost, anti-malware/AV is a monthly service cost, ...this list just goes on and on.

And they want $10/month for unlimited searches full well and knowing $5/300 isn't even a reasonable bracket for half of us.

It's steep, and we're all swimming in in these costs.

$5/unlimited would be more reasonable, but it still piles on all these SaaS costs that everyone now uses. Gotta grow grow grow grow you know. Capitalism is great!

NuSkooler··on Introducing Kagi Search's New Design
That's some super steep pricing
NuSkooler··on Rents are soaring. Is RealPage to blame?
I'm not sure why the bigger issue isn't being talked about more, but yes, algorithms and "AI" are deployed in fashions that optimize profit. That's it. Profit. It's only getting much, much worse.
NuSkooler··on The Towns Outsmarting Airbnb
Totally agree that individuals buying houses just for the sake of renting them out is also a problem. Renting out your legitimate 2nd home, I don't have a problem with.
NuSkooler··on The Towns Outsmarting Airbnb
Exactly
NuSkooler··on The Towns Outsmarting Airbnb
This effects small businesses as well: These large mega corps buy up huge chunks of land and plan the entire thing from housing (which of course comes with their tight and pretty unregulated HSA) as well as slots pre-planned for particular businesses.

Here in Utah you can drive across the entire Wasatch valley and see a repeat "stamp" of this crap every 10 miles.

NuSkooler··on The Towns Outsmarting Airbnb
This feels like attacking a symptom, not the cause. Housing and real estate across the board have been bought up by private corporations -- including housing that they then turn around and Airbnb. This has plagued the housing market in general, and of course, Airbnb.

Airbnb itself is/was still great when you can find a private owner leasing out their extra/summer/whatever home.

NuSkooler··on Expensive fridges are dying, leading to fraud claims
I've heard this same remark from now 3 appliance installation/repair folk. The advise I was given was do NOT upgrade i.e. our refrigerator because it will keep working while the new models are made to die.

This really shouldn't shock anyone, it's a bit of the status quo for appliances, printers, toys, you name it. Planned obsolescence is real and going strong.

NuSkooler··on Welcome to Apache OpenDAL
This looks very promising. I love that Apache went straight to Rust vs the usual Java or similar.
