NoZebra120vClip··on Due to blade damage, Mars Helicopter Ingenuity will not fly again
It's interesting to think about:

The stated mission for the Space Race has often been "put a man in orbit", "put a man on the Moon", "put staff in the space station for X period".

But implicit in all of those mission designs has been the goal of returning the crew alive and in one piece. The record is rather favorable in that regard, and it's always a tragedy when we lose someone.

So that's one of the reasons a crewed Mars missions is a daunting prospect: because even with improved technology, it may be a one-way trip.

A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water may increase that risk, but you don't brush teeth directly afterwards, but instead you eat something, which will normalize pH.

If you're in the habit of weakening the enamel and then immediately brushing your teeth before they can self-repair, that will be a problem.

"free as in free puppies, or free as in beer"? I've never heard that, and they're selling themselves short, if they redefine gratis as "no strings attached".

Let's just go full ironic-Heinlein and say "free as in lunch"!

NoZebra120vClip··on Ask HN: Lenovo encouraging Chromebook users to install Linux?
Lenovo is globalist, and Microsoft is globalist as well. Despite slightly different topologies, their globes intersect by a significant amount.
NoZebra120vClip··on Ask HN: Lenovo encouraging Chromebook users to install Linux?
While that is the origin of the acronym, it is not indicative of how FAQs are compiled today, especially by corporate support. It's merely a category of document to them.

The first entry in these instructions is how to enable the built-in Linux subsystem in ChromeOS. So, there's their token effort to see people keep it around.

The last entry in the document is a link to their systems which come preloaded with Linux. You see, if someone enjoys toying with Linux on an underpowered/non-certified device, they will love upgrading to a full-fledged machine that can really cope with all they want to do now.

I purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad T580 in 2018 because it was certified for RHEL. They also have a range that's certified for Ubuntu. Despite my device's certification, it came preloaded with Windows 10, but I did run flawless Fedora for several years, before reverting. That Lenovo is still going strong, and one of a pair of "daily drivers". (My other one is a Chromebook! Yes, I run Linux on it, every day!)

NoZebra120vClip··on Git commit messages are useless
Our GitLab instance started logging commit messages that all read "end", and I thought about it awhile.

It turns out that a coworker had discovered the --amend flag, but spelled it as -amend, and so it was interpreted as -a -m "end"

The film has been played on endless repeat, with "original sound", since the 1970s, at Disneyland's Main Street Cinema. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Street_Cinema

It would be interesting to see if anyone has made remarks on the sound quality and whether the flutter has been noticeable over the past 50+ years.

NoZebra120vClip··on The Uncomfortable – a collection of deliberately inconvenient objects
In the early 90s I worked for a place whose phone number was apt to be published in a news story about the Internet. So people who wondered what it was, and how to get on it, would call that number and reach us.

We had 2-3 part-time employees answering phones, voicemail and email. As you can imagine, we were effectively DDOS'd and we knew it, every time a national news story hit the presses.

Our #1 response to individual callers was to send them a list of dial-up ISPs. This list could be had on anonymous FTP, but since our callers were not yet online, we printed out the list, on demand, and popped it in the outgoing postal mail, each and every time. That printer was the most unreliable device in the office.

Meanwhile, in the same office, we ran an ISP which offered dialup service to a few thousand users. The authentication server needed to read /etc/passwd sequentially, each time a modem answered. The usernames were often found at the bottom of the file. So at peak hours, our authentication server began timing out, backlogged with the requests and the ever-growing user roster.

So I took the server code and introduced a RAM cache. It read /etc/passwd and held it in memory until the file was modified on disk. We swapped in the new code and it immediately smoothed everything out again. The operators all breathed a sigh of relief.

The article says that all participants were eligible for screening, but it doesn't say how many were screened or tested.

Also, this cohort would be age 28-36 years currently. The lowest median age for HPV cancer diagnosis is 50. https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/hpv/statistics/age.htm

The article is about 12 years old. Unix is one of those topics on Wikipedia where experts wrote a lot of trivial articles, for every shell builtin and implementation details. Gradually, these are challenged for independent notability and merged into larger articles, or deemed to be no more than dictionary definitions.

There are some interesting points raised on the Talk page: that this alleged philosophy wasn't really espoused or coined by the implementors, so there's one angle for you.

NoZebra120vClip··on Train robbery for Amazon packages? More common than you think
How would that work?

If you find an object with no obvious owner, you either leave it where it lies, or you report it by turning it in somewhere. To the business where you found it, or the Lost & Found department of the transit authority, or the police if all else fails.

I don't see anyone calling up the police to say, "Hi, I found <item> and I'll keep it until someone comes over here to claim it!" because the only people coming over will be the police themselves.

Every place with a Lost & Found service, and the police, regularly liquidate the unclaimed property. You can find lists and auctions on your civic website if they're selling the stuff. They may also donate it to charity or destroy it.

The police or anyone else are not going to stick a tag on a box with your name and number so you can come to claim it after the grace period elapses. That's not how claiming stuff works.

NoZebra120vClip··on What killed the fight scene?
You mean, aside from five out of five of those characters being women, feminist icons, and members of entire nations of exclusively female warriors?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonder_Woman#Feminist_icon

If your stable of film stars consists of many fighting women, how do you stage fist-fights between a man and a woman in ways that will not trigger victims of domestic abuse and violence? I suppose it is OK for Grand Theft Auto, but action films need to appeal to wide audiences and the general public.

NoZebra120vClip··on Appeals Court: FBI's Safe-Deposit Box Seizures Violated Fourth Amendment
> What were you worried about happening?

The point of the viewing room is that it starts and ends empty.

This contractor had stored all his equipment and tools in there. Then I had to go and mingle it with my box's contents.

What if he had discovered some drill bits were missing? I could be suspected, because I was alone in private with them, so I could have placed them in my SDB.

I asked the manager what I should do if I find someone else's belongings when I enter the viewing room. They said, that shouldn't happen: I should inform them. Yep.

NoZebra120vClip··on Mr. Rogers' music was intricate (2020) [video]
Mr. Rogers was a fully-qualified Presbyterian minister. He was a televangelist who didn't directly mention Jesus Christ as his savior.

One of the precepts of hymns and sung texts is that the music imparts the mood and emotion, rather than the speaker imposing his own interpretation on the text. Even if someone chants recto tono, the mode/key will elicit a less personal and more universal feeling to the words.

Mr. Rogers was still part of that transition from vaudeville and live musical theater. My childhood experience of his musicality was that it was sometimes so well-integrated that we hardly noticed he was singing, or accompanied, and sometimes it took center stage, such as when the trolley bell sounded and the piano imitated its travel along the tracks.

All that insight from this video, such as the improvisation and originality of each recording, the mature nature of the arrangements rather than a "childish" plinking of the keys, that's all a confirmation of my feelings about Mr. Rogers being an excellent father figure and an icon of what mass media can do right.

Your critique falls flat (pun intended) because there is no DTMF here.

Also, this video is a chopped-up edit from a session of real music performance, rather than someone's original composition. Many commenters seem oblivious to this distinction.
