Seems to me sticking your head in the sand, however tempting it might be, would be playing right into the hands of the current administration. Regardless, it's a very bad idea.
Nerdfest··on Why Apple Eventually Lost Me and I’m Switching Back to Windows
I've been a Linux user for about 10 years. The only hardware I've had trouble with after setting up dozens of machines for myself and friends has been Wifi devices from RTLink. They were solvable, but requires an actual recompile of drivers after kernel updates.

I've had a couple of experiences in the other direction though, including a Sony Viao laptop where neither the wired or wireless network worked after Window 7 install. With Linux (Kubuntu), everything worked flawlessly. This was not some strange one-off laptop manufacturer.

The other thing won't matter to many, but the install time for Windows was almost three hours, while Linux (and all it's accompanying office software, etc) took about 20 minutes. Updates are similar though, so there is some value there.

Just a few more data points, but I, and many others find that Linux is far easier to use than Windows these days as well.

Nerdfest··on Why Apple Eventually Lost Me and I’m Switching Back to Windows
People won't abandon Apple in droves unless the media start trashing them to the same degree they've been praising them. They've effectively given Apple billions in free advertising over the years, so I'd guess it would take a lot of trashing.
Nerdfest··on New North American Trade Deal Has Bad News for Canadian Copyright
I think we're at the point that copyright can no longer be respected, or certainly close to it.
Nerdfest··on No Cash Needed at This Cafe: Students Pay the Tab with Their Personal Data
Much like you you could go to some social network other than Facebook. You can but it's inconvenient.
Nerdfest··on iOS 12 released
Perhaps you have a Samsung? Some of the changes that vendors make are aggressively stupid, in the name of being different.
Nerdfest··on Was ditching the headphone jack a good idea?
A good headphone design makes the parts that wear out replaceable. Bose does this with some of their stuff, as do others, I would guess. It should be considered an important part of the design.
Nerdfest··on An 11-Year-Old Changed the Results of Florida's Presidential Vote at DEFCON
They quite clearly should be distrusted in the current conditions. Electronic voting should go. This greatly reduces the attack surface.
Nerdfest··on NZ Court of Appeal Upholds Kim Dotcom Extradition Decision to the US
He could play by their rules, if he had far more money. Buying policy and laws ain't cheap.
Nerdfest··on [dead]
I think people named Adolph still have a hard time.
Nerdfest··on 'Breakthrough' algorithm exponentially faster than any previous one
The article claims it's reducing the number of paralellizable steps, but it sounds like it's actually reducing serial operations and become more parallel.
Nerdfest··on Phantom traffic jams, and why lane expansion isn’t really successful
If a lot more people drove manual transmissions, or at least learned that you can slow down by just raising the accelerator a little rather than hitting the brakes, things would be a lot better. It really doesn't seem like a hard thing to learn.
Nerdfest··on Poop Is Raining from the Sky in Canada, and the Government Says It's Not Planes
I'm assuming it's the spinning up of "Space Force".
Nerdfest··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
"The new notebook was universally applauded by tech pundits". Riiiiiight.
Nerdfest··on The Best Alternative for Every Facebook Feature
Google Plus us quite popular with photographers.
Nerdfest··on A fork on GitHub is no fork
I would guess that it's stored and dealt with using a basic "copy on write" strategy. It's functionally a copy, which is all that usually matters. This may have been an oversight.
Nerdfest··on Four companies dominate our daily lives unlike any other in human history
I can, (and usually do) quite easily get by without Microsoft, Intel, Amazon, and Apple. I'd love it if everyone dumped FaceBook. Google would be more difficult, but not impossible. Part of what keeps these companies going is the inertia and "friends" factors, but much of it is that people like how well they work. They have to keep in mind that they're one good competitor away from having a serious chunk of their business taken .... assuming they don't just buy out the competitor.
Nerdfest··on Telegram apps fall foul of iOS App Store content rules
When developing for iOS, you "serve at the pleasure of the King".
Nerdfest··on Microsoft Office 2019 will only work on Windows 10
In most large corporations and governments, the primary reason for not using open source (especially is software development) is that open source doesn't take purchasing people out for lunches or golf vacations.
Nerdfest··on Microsoft Office 2019 will only work on Windows 10
Someone that paid for 8 would probably disagree. It's no longer a free upgrade, is it? Perhaps people should switch to LibreOffice. It's really more usable according to most people I've talked to.
Nerdfest··on I Microdosed Before It Was Cool
To advertise them. Duh.
Nerdfest··on Linux desktop market share over 3%
You obviously have an iPhone. Rewarding that platform lock-in would not be my first choice.
Nerdfest··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Seems to me that Google has a better privacy record than Apple. Both companies get all sorts of data about their users, but Apple has had some serious data breaches.
Nerdfest··on The war between Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple
... and you don't think all the free marketing is a large part of that? It's a little quieter lately, but they have a huge fan-base in the media world due to them using Apple kit for both audio and video editing for years. How many other phone manufacturers get multiple articles in the news when a new model is released?
Nerdfest··on Justice Dept. To Take on Affirmative Action in College Admissions
"Poor academic and other performance is just one small symptom of larger systemic issues."

Like culture, which is sadly, by choice.

Nerdfest··on The war between Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple
Android can be used without any connection to Google at all. You have a more limited choice of software (using F-Droid, etc), but it's quite easy to do.
Nerdfest··on The war between Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple
The writers seem to be solid Apple fans and exaggerate their influence. With billions in free marketing from every media site on the planet, Apple would be pretty much irrelevant already.
Nerdfest··on The iPhone killed my inner nerd
"have been impacted by the iPhone. Chromebooks are locked down with an app store". Windows 10S apparently as well. The damage done by Apple making this acceptable is huge.
Nerdfest··on Are Pop Lyrics Getting More Repetitive?
Nor rap, as it doesn't generally have a verse/chorus structure. Claiming it's not music aside, fans tend to describe it more as poetry, which is generally non-repetitive.

I'm guessing it would be extremely repetitive for poetry though.

Nerdfest··on Felony Charges for 6 Reporters at Inauguration Protests
I saw a few videos on mainstream news from that day and it looked like police were indiscriminately spraying both protesters and bystanders. I'm amazed it wasn't covered more, but I guess there's bigger problems.
