MrZander··on Microsoft is open sourcing Windows 11's UI framework
Very true. We just developed a brand new LOB desktop app and settled on sticking with WPF. WinUI has been dead for years imo.

On a side note, I still love WPF after working in it for 10 years. Maybe it's just familiarity, and it's a little verbose at times, but man it's a great framework when you know that you're doing.

MrZander··on What happens when people don't understand how AI works
Oh, interesting, TIL. Didn't realize there was a second step to training these models.
MrZander··on What happens when people don't understand how AI works
This doesn't follow with my understanding of transformers at all. I'm not aware of any human labeling in the training.

What would labeling even do for an LLM? (Not including multimodal)

The whole point of attention is that it uses existing text to determine when tokens are related to other tokens, no?

I'm surprised that isn't already against the app store rules. Seems like it totally undermines the idea of an app being labeled as "free".
MrZander··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
> To accomplish that feat, the treatment is wrapped in fatty lipid molecules to protect it from degradation in the blood on its way to the liver, where the edit will be made. Inside the lipids are instructions that command the cells to produce an enzyme that edits the gene. They also carry a molecular GPS — CRISPR — which was altered to crawl along a person’s DNA until it finds the exact DNA letter that needs to be changed.

That is one of the most incredible things I have ever read.

MrZander··on Renault Is Giving Away Its Proprietary Tech to Stop EV Fires Quickly
Yeah, is it on the bottom? Seems like there should be a pipe somewhere more accessible or something.
MrZander··on Dungeon Crawler Carl
I'm currently listening to the 6th of this series, it's a very fun listen.

There is a also "sound booth theater" version of the first book where the characters are all voiced by an actual cast member and there are sound effects. It was incredibly impressive, like an audio movie. I wish the other books had SBT versions too.

MrZander··on US children fall further behind in reading
If the point of this metric is to gauge how well US schools are teaching literacy, we should only include people who went through the US school system. Which means we should exclude immigrants, both literate and illiterate, from the reporting.
MrZander··on Bitwarden introduces mandatory 2FA for new devices
I also hated this change, but there is a setting:

Settings -> Autofill -> Click items to autofill in Vault view

MrZander··on Bitwarden is turning 2FA on by default for new devices
To throw in a second viewpoint: 99% of the time I open the extension, it is to trigger auto-fill. I don't like having my credentials auto-fill on page load, I like to be the one to trigger it.

That being said, I also hated the change that hid the copy buttons, but they have a setting that brings them back.

MrZander··on Show HN: Word Slicer
Fun game concept!

Some improvements I would request:

* An option to disable the "success" sound in the settings. It is quite loud.

* There is no way for me to go back and see what my time was once I left the page. I only have the option to replay the game.

MrZander··on Show HN: I made a puzzle game that gently introduces my favorite math mysteries
I know that it is impossible, but it was fun to try to make a 5 color map work. That being said, is this a bug? https://imgur.com/a/zbkYg9j

I can't seem to wrap my head around why this isn't 3 colors.

MrZander··on The Mythical Non-Roboticist: Wouldn't it be great if everyone could do robotics?
I have been using the stock alarm app on an Android phone daily for at least 10 years and I've never once had it not work as expected.

I can't fathom how it could possibly be failing that often for you.

MrZander··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
I drove a Polestar when I was in Norway and thought it was really nice, but I've never drove a Tesla before.

What makes it better?

MrZander··on Best Buy Geek Squad employees report mass layoffs
It can be pretty difficult to make retail computer repair profitable at scale. Our company has largely pivoted to IT consulting for other local companies who can benefit more from not having to hire an internal IT team.

Individuals have a much lower ROI from getting IT support. It's expensive to diagnose and fix "why is my computer running slow". And often times the answer is to upgrade your computer. It can be hard to stomach someone charging you an hour of labor for that.

MrZander··on Apex Legends finals postponed after suffering unprecedented hack
There hasn't been any confirmation about how exactly it happened. It seems to me that the most likely scenario was these players got phished prior to the tournament and were already infected with malware.
MrZander··on Vyxal: A code-golfing language experience
I agree. I used to frequent codegolf.stackexchange.com but nowadays it's just a bunch of 2 character solutions in 50 different home-grown golfing languages.

Golfing languages can be fun, but they do feel like something totally different than trying to make a 200 line C program run in 200 bytes.

MrZander··on VMware Kills Off 56 Products
Yeah, this is a really unclear announcement.

It sounds like they are saying the products are entirely discontinued, including subscriptions, but then they say: "In the future, at the time of renewal, customers will be offered the best subscription products to fit their needs."

What does that even mean?

MrZander··on Copilot key will eventually be required in new PC keyboards
I don't use the menu key for daily-driver uses, but I have definitely used it in situations where the mouse was inoperable. It can occasionally be useful if a window gets stuck off-screen and you can't right click it. All rare scenarios, though.
MrZander··on We are going to start charging for dedicated IPv4 in January 1st
Wow, how is that even legal?
MrZander··on Show HN: Vowl daily word guessing game
When does the new game release? It is almost noon in California and it is still on the previous days game
MrZander··on Show HN: A Dalle-3 and GPT4-Vision feedback loop
This is absolutely hilarious. "business-themed puns" turned into incorrectly labeling the skiers race has me rolling.
MrZander··on Volkswagen cuts jobs as demand for EVs plunges
The past few years have been some of the historically best times ever for buying new cars. Used cars are crazy expensive right now[1]

MrZander··on We spent $20k on Google Play pre-registration ads
I'm using Brave on a Windows PC, the "Get the App" button sends me to the Apple store also. In fact, there is no indication that this is even available on Android at all.
MrZander··on Google now requires and lists phone number in Play Store listings
If you view the "Full Policy" link, it does seem to state that it must be shown. "where applicable" is vague though...

Before you submit your app, you must:
Accurately provide your developer account information, including the following details:
  * Legal name and address
  * D-U-N-S number, if registering as an organization
  * Contact email address and phone number
  * Developer email address and phone number shown on Google Play where applicable
  * Payment methods where applicable
  * Google payment profile linked to your developer account
MrZander··on Brave Browser introduces vertical tabs
Gonna be honest, that website is doing a big disservice for the product. No screenshots and the navigation disappears when I click a link so I have to hit the browser back button to go to the next page.

No screenshots is huge though. That should be front an center for something that is all about the UI experience. Why would I commit $100 dollars to something I can't see.

MrZander··on World Capitals Voronoi (2014)
I wonder which country got the biggest relative bump in territory. Vatican City is probably a contender, and Timor-Leste nabbed a huge part of Australia.
MrZander··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt
I know plenty of non-wealthy people, myself included, who were able to pay for college by working. The answer is going to a school you can afford.
MrZander··on .zip is now available as a TLD
I see, I assume that is true for all TLDs? (Can you tell I don't do much web front-end lol)
MrZander··on .zip is now available as a TLD
Well, that seems like a bad idea. Out of curiosity, does anyone know what happens if I have: `<a href="google.zip">Link</a>`?

Will the browser navigate to an external site or will it try to download google.zip?
