MrGando··on Facebook says Apple’s iOS 14 changes could hurt its ad targeting
The big companies also use targeted ads, but with orders of magnitude bigger budgets. It's the big companies who have forced the small business to spend on targeted ads or die.

Disclaimer: Worked on a successful ad-tech company for ~2.5 years.

MrGando··on Ask HN: I'd like to learn vocals, any suggestion on how I can do this?
I've been playing Piano for ~28 years, almost went professional (Jazz) but ended up doing engineering. My advice would be to find a teacher, if you know nothing about it you need a teacher that corrects you so that you don't develop bad habits. Once you're no longer a novice, you can start learning other things on your own.

When looking for a teacher, I wouldn't try to find "the best" or "most virtuoso" around, but what works for you. Try several teachers, get some sessions with 2-3 and find which one is the one that motivates you the most, and understands you the most. A teacher is like a coach and a partner in an adventure... the most important thing is that they can make you progress and keep you motivated.

Good luck :)

MrGando··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
> The Bay Area's r is probably under 0.8 at this point

Could you tell me where are you getting this magic number ballpark estimate from? (somewhere concrete, not just your gut and imagination)

MrGando··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
You start doing it when you can gather enough information, fast enough to prevent new spikes from happening. The number of "known cases" becomes very low, and then ideally one can react fast enough when new clusters start forming.
MrGando··on The San Francisco Bay Area shelter-in-place order is being extended through May
I mean, his argument has very little logic. He's just using numbers to tell the story that he wants to hear. "Correlation doesn't imply causation"
MrGando··on Discord is not an acceptable choice for free software projects
I was just reading the discussion happening around the post and where people are going with this. I agree with you Jared, and I didn't find the post particularly compelling as well.

I should have been more clear. I just read through the comments here in HN and tried to make an observation about the level of the conversation that the HN community (is it a community?) seems to be having. Mainly wanted to express that I hoped that we could all learn more about privacy in this day and age, given that it's (or should be) a fundamental matter that relates to most of what we work on these days (at least as people working in tech).

MrGando··on Discord is not an acceptable choice for free software projects
It's a bit sad to read so many "I don't discuss anything illegal, so this doesn't affect me" arguments here.

That's not really how it works, and if we take history as an example, most of what you say can be used for profiling and targeting potentially. So no, the above argument misses the point, completely.

We can do better as educated folks. A good starting point to learn bout privacy would be to read -at least a bit- of Daniel J. Solove's "The Digital Person: Technology and Privacy in the Information Age". Also, learning more about history and what happened with PII (personable identifiable information) in WW2 is important.

MrGando··on Paris syndrome
Same, it's pretty rough.
MrGando··on Paris syndrome
> quantity of dog poop

You should checkout San Francisco, it's not only dog poop here though ;)

In all seriousness, I'm Married to a French woman, lived in France for a little while. Paris is my favorite city, followed by Tokyo probably

PS: Last time I visited the Eiffel Tower I was 4 years old.

MrGando··on Launch HN: Fintual Inc. (YC S18) – Automated Wealth Manager for Latin America
Hey Agustín, Nico Goles here.

Just wanted to write here to congratulate you and your team. I've been following what you guys have been doing for many, many years, and you have never ceased to impress me.

Since I've been living here in San Francisco, I've gotten quite into personal finance and retirement investment. I've wondered many times why my family there in Chile can't have access to some of the tools available here. Having read your post and done a bit of research the reasons seem pretty clear to me.

Thanks for working on such a meaningful solution, I've already recommended it to several family members.

Good luck to you and the team, and if I can help with anything don't hesitate and reach out :)

Best, Nicolás

MrGando··on Electric scooter companies will require permits in San Francisco
I live in San Francisco. These things are everywhere, the people who ride them leave them anywhere as well. Sometimes just laying flat on the ground even. I hate that they take sidewalk space. Hopefully they'll figure it out... but I'm all in for designated parking areas for these things or taking them off the sidewalk.
MrGando··on Forget Cambridge Analytica. Zuck could use FB data for his own presidential run
Yep, you get it.
MrGando··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
Are the big companies really in favor of neutrality? At least in the short mid-term I believe it’s more helpful for them to get their silos even more consolidated...

Also... they haven’t been super loud for neutrality and this happened. It almost felt as if they did not care.

It’s a sad day.

MrGando··on Semiconductor CEO trying to make the world's best Pinot Noir
Article doesn't even talk about yeast. The whole thing sounds close to a factory to me, apparently the guy hasn't even worked with vignerons in France at all. Unlikely to happen.
MrGando··on Medium releases Memberships
> I pay for NYT and some stories are amazing. I finish maybe 5% of the ones I start reading and I probably attempt less than 5% of what they publish.

Well, hopefully you finish more than 5% of my reply...

> Meh, sensationalism. How is any of this pertinent to me as a 29 year old engineer in SF? Other than making me afraid of my own shadow and riling up negative emotions.

Seriously? Those are the only thoughts that an article like that (it's finely written, just read it) can evoke on you?

Makes me sad to read your statements, I can only hope that you're not representative of a "29 year old engineer in SF"

I happen to be 31 years old, an engineer and also live in SF... a terrorist attack in London, does happen to be pertinent to me.

MrGando··on Ask HN: How to convince my team that microservices are not a good idea to us?
I can't agree more with this approach. These are usually the things people selling micro services overlook. Also, I think in general questioning how to address the hard challenges with a given framework/architecture/infrastructure is the path that leads to more sustainable progress.
MrGando··on Will Democracy Survive Big Data and Artificial Intelligence?
As far as I know, there hasn't really been a quantum leap in AI in decades. Most of the fundamentals of the things you see in AI and machine learning are old, like 70s and 80s. The big change is that we have way more and cheaper processing power, so you can see AI happening in fields and areas that were just impossible in the past.

A true Turing Test passing machine, is still something that we seem to be more than a quantum leap behind of.

MrGando··on Uber Now Tracks Passengers’ Locations Even After They’re Dropped Off
I'm not sharing my location with Uber anymore on my iPhone App. Pretty simple.
MrGando··on IBM says Swift is ready for the enterprise
Well, that's just not true IMHO. They need the ABI stability or I wouldn't do anything for enterprise. Also, Foundation getting open sourced is a huge part of this to avoid using third party libs for a huge amount of things (HTTP requests for example).
MrGando··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)
Same question, seems they are either looking for a junior dev or they just don't know market rate for an iOS dev.
MrGando··on The world’s most liveable cities
Yeah, same here, sucks, interested about the situation in Bay Area from a more 'impartial' point of view.
MrGando··on The world’s most liveable cities
Where can one get the full list? I downloaded the article and it doesn't have it...

MrGando··on You probably don't need a JavaScript framework
I just felt a program is such a general and high-level way to describe software... basically anything that computes...

wikipedia: " collection of instructions that performs a specific task when executed by a computer "

We can do better than describing a JS Framework/Library, than calling it a program I guess.

MrGando··on You probably don't need a JavaScript framework
A program?

MrGando··on Ghost in the Shell remains our most challenging film about technology
Totally agree, mentioned that too. The 3D stuff is horrible, just try to watch the original version....
MrGando··on Ghost in the Shell remains our most challenging film about technology
I watched the original in 1995. It is a masterpiece, have rewatched many many times, always great. The remastered version with 3D is horrible though. The Stand Alone Complex is way more pop-corn material, also easier to digest, didn't really like it very much. The original film's pace is closer to a Tarkovsky film... Slower, more profound, poetic at times.
