MintelIE··on Every year I fill out this survey from Apple, for Apple developers
They are part of my retirement fund.
MintelIE··on Every year I fill out this survey from Apple, for Apple developers
I have simply stopped buying "apps" even though I am still an iOS user. Quite a few of my purchases have just disappeared over time. I moved to a newer device and they couldn't be installed. I'm not happy with Apple and I got rid of my modern Macs (still have 1/2 dozen SE/30s) completely, now I use Debian or OpenBSD.

Apple is extremely tight lipped on what they're doing and where they're going, they will support and then drop some technology on an apparent whim. I've had serious issues when they dropped WebObjects, Java as a first class Cocoa development language, and now moving to Swift seems like a message that all my work in Objective C will be thrown away by Apple. The promise of ZFS on OS X made me buy a Mac Pro, and then several months later they just dropped all mention of ZFS on OS X.

I'm not going to stick with a company which is so secretive about what they are going to do, failing to even publish roadmaps for their customers and developers. Mindshare among the tech geeks is how OS X took off. Now they're losing it - many developers I know are moving away from the platform too.

MintelIE··on Apple’s Mac Chip Switch Is Double Trouble for Intel
Apple is "preparing to announce" the switch, but haven't we heard these rumors for, well, years now? How much more reliable are these rumors now compared to a couple years ago?

I'm a little surprised to see Bloomberg basically cribbing MacRumors.

EDIT: Instantly downvoted? LOL

MintelIE··on I Replaced My MacBook Pro with a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB for a Day
I've been using a Pi 4 4GB as a desktop for a couple months now. Considering that my other main computer is an ancient Thinkpad, I don't feel hampered by the speed. I used a Pi 3B for a desktop replacement for a while and while it was fine with my typical use (emacs+mostly command line) "modern" browsing was uncomfortably slow. It was perfectly capable of video playback in standard formats but there are problem sites using codecs which are not supported by the media decoder in the Pi. The situation with the Pi 4 is quite similar but it's just about fast enough for Youtube now.

Most any school or office could switch to the Pi 4 seamlessly these days for sure though.

MintelIE··on Venmo and Paypal Are Stalling Urgent Efforts to Bail People Out of Jail
I think a big issue is that Paypal and Venmo don't want to come under scrutiny for aiding domestic terrorists.
MintelIE··on Jim Keller Resigns from Intel, Effective Immediately
It’s called sliding, the idea is to fill a comments section up with crap and make it unusable. It’s a strategy employed by trolls, corporate reputation managers, political groups, and even apparently US government agencies.
MintelIE··on You can bypass YouTube ads by adding a dot after the domain
I don't watch ads and I don't pay for Internet video. I get what I want.
MintelIE··on The Silence of the Never Facebookers
It varies by district but my wife is a teacher (now) and she has worked in several schools where the special education budget met or exceeded the non-special, while serving only 3-5% of the school's enrolled children.
MintelIE··on The Silence of the Never Facebookers
As the amount of administration support staff and special needs paraprofessionals skyrocketed, the resources allocated to regular students and teachers have dwindled. People feel good about having students with special needs included in regular classes but it has caused an enormous reallocation of resources, shifting massive cash and attention to the lowest performing students.

There was a book about this once, Harrison Bergeron.

MintelIE··on You can bypass YouTube ads by adding a dot after the domain
This is great, everybody hates Youtube's ads. They are incredibly loud and annoying.
MintelIE··on Intel Discloses Lakefield CPUs Specifications
Can we get this one without Intel ME? Or with the HA bit twiddled in advance?
MintelIE··on Haiku R1/beta2 has been released
I used BeOS for a couple years in the 1990s as my exclusive OS. It had all the software I needed at the time. I especially liked the feature where you could clone your whole working system to another drive or partition, live. That actually saved me on a couple occasions, I would perform a weekly backup of my whole live system to a secondary drive.

It's so nice to see this project making great progress.

MintelIE··on New inline assembly syntax available in Rust nightly
Is Rust ever going to go for standardization? Seems like the language has been in a state of flux with heavy changes all the time. When's it going to settle down a bit?
MintelIE··on IBM no longer offers general purpose facial recognition or analysis software
Only AFTER they helped China develop the technology to racially ID their Muslims. And IBM isn't alone, many companies have helped China to efficiently fill its death camps.
MintelIE··on 5G and Shannon’s Law
Smart Dust used to track you because you’re blocking banner ads needs incredible bandwidth, or will in the near future.
MintelIE··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
It’s not necessary. It’s invasive and intrusive and unacceptable. I use Icecat and will continue to do so.
MintelIE··on Pioneer's Legato Link Conversion DAC Technology
This long, Web 1.0 style page also has information about this type of technique.

MintelIE··on Why can't I sign in with Facebook anymore?
I tried to surf on over to SeatGeek's site to see what they do or sell or whatever but they won't even let you connect if you're using Tor Browser. Ah well, never heard of them before anyway, I'm sure I won't be missing out on much.
MintelIE··on Millions of Americans skipping payments as wave of defaults and evictions looms
Sure it can, you’ll just end up demoralizing yourself. Expect companies NOT to troubleshoot their policies, and then when one occasionally does you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If you expect them to police themselves, most of the time you will end up being disappointed.
MintelIE··on Project C-90, an attempt to catalogue every cassette tape
Note this isn’t an attempt to catalogue every cassette tape sold with music on it, just every tape available as blank.
MintelIE··on SpaceX Starlink is now its own ASN and present at the Seattle Internet Exchange
Really hope Elon charges by the GB, I don’t want to subsidize all the Netflix watchers.
MintelIE··on Acme – A framework for distributed reinforcement learning
Acme is an editor.
MintelIE··on Tor Browser 9.5
It’s literally funded and made by the NSA.

Dissidents and activists have been busted using Tor and there’s always a friendly government damage control agent ready to pop up (any forum, any time of day) to remind people that Tor couldn’t possibly be backdoored or owned, it was always some other type of thing they used in parallel construction.

Over-shilling is what clued next in. You don’t get this kind of response without a massive panopticon dispatching reputation managers. Why the heck would the NSA write NSA proof software? LOL.

EDIT: this is in reply to mapgrep and his crew:

Did I say I won't use Tor Browser? Is it really necessary to put words into my mouth to make your point? I've noticed this a lot with people who are very very lightning fast, almost unbelievably fast, to defend Tor on any forum or platform on the Internet. The speed at which it occurs, and the typical over-the-top, rude, and unnecessary attempts to make people seem to say things they 100% have not.

You should apologize. Obviously the NSA has broken Tor, they made it. Forget about current funding, where'd it originate?

And why does the Tor Project publish a list of exit nodes?

MintelIE··on Russia’s Elbrus 8CB Microarchitecture: 8-Core VLIW on TSMC 28nm
Where can I get one of these? Sick of involuntarily being included in the Talpiot Program.
MintelIE··on Lawsuit over online book lending could bankrupt Internet Archive
That’s OK. Archive has been deleting all kinds of content because it ruffles their Bay Area feathers. It’s clear that projects like this aren’t ready for the long haul and once you let activists become curators it’s all over.
MintelIE··on Tor Browser 9.5
I use Tor Browser for most of my day to day browsing to foil all the non-governmental corporate botnet spying. Of course I’m under no illusions that it secures you against the government. But I don’t do anything naughty so I’m not worried.
MintelIE··on The Fastest Google Fonts
Does anybody else block fonts? Not only is it wasteful for my mobile data plan, but I just have this suspicion that sooner than later they will be used as a vector for some kind of security issue.
MintelIE··on Trump signs executive order targeting protections for social media companies
When the social media executives got before Congress and lied their asses off they must have suspected that something like this might happen in the future.
MintelIE··on Pompeo tells Congress Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China
UK joined the AIIB and Belt And Road program. They won't be objecting except perhaps in the meekest, mildest manner possible.
MintelIE··on Americans, it turns out, would rather visit a store than buy food online
>I don't think it's outlandish for someone to give you a bruised apple And apparently grocery stores put people with opinions like yours in charge of packing produce boxes, which leads to lost sales. Nobody's arguing that they're inedible, but how much of a discount is the retailer prepared to offer me for accepting his low grade produce?
