MikeCapone··on [dead]
I don't know. Would he drop the character that made him successful in the first place? He already has a successful talk show and a lot of leverage. I suspect he negotiated a lot of freedom, though I can't be sure how far he'll go with it.
MikeCapone··on iPhone 5s Owners Gobbling “Unprecedented” Levels of Data, Study Finds
I don't have a 5s, but I went from the original retina iPad (with the A5) to the iPad Air (with A7) and the difference is massive, and it does lead to more usage. Just the waiting time could easily result in me going on 20% more webpages per day, or watching an extra youtube video.
MikeCapone··on iPhone 5s Owners Gobbling “Unprecedented” Levels of Data, Study Finds
Indeed. The fact that this is specifically about the 5s and the recent iPad tells me that part of this is probably the speed of the A7. If it's faster to open apps, browse the web, etc, you tend to do more of it. That makes the device more useful to users and reduces friction, which leads to high usage.

In short: They use more data because they're better devices.

But there are also probably some of the other variables mentioned by the parent. They just apply to all iOS devices equally, not just those models.

MikeCapone··on Show HN: My Internet life
It crashes Safari on my iPad Air (latest version of iOS).
MikeCapone··on iPad Air Review
Could you point me to a URL that shows that iOS7 have compressed memory? I couldn't find an official mention of it (maybe I'm searching for it wrong).
MikeCapone··on iPad Air
It's also not as useful on a tablet, so there's less hurry.

A phone is often in public spaces, and unlocked dozens of times a day. That's rare for a tablet.

MikeCapone··on Richard Feynman: Cargo Cult Science (1974)
That was a great biography. Oppenheimer is fascinating in his own right.
MikeCapone··on Everybody Let's Stop the TPP: Share These Videos and Spread the Word
While there can be good and bad things in a new deal, we also have to look at what we have now. Tariffs reducing trade to shield groups with political clout from competition aren't exactly a good thing...
MikeCapone··on And Then Steve Said, ‘Let There Be an iPhone’
Better to be a pirate than join the Navy, I suppose...
MikeCapone··on The Time I “Interviewed” At Apple
The big difference is that in the enterprise the people who buy the products and the people who use the products are different. In consumer products, they are same, and so the details and the user experience matter.

A lot of the stuff that the enterprise does would be fatal in the consumer business.

MikeCapone··on The Time I “Interviewed” At Apple
It's very likely that their hand was forced by Google's contract renewal.
MikeCapone··on The Time I “Interviewed” At Apple
People pay for Apple products, so they expect something that works well and looks good.

The switching costs are also much higher with hardware than software. You don't want to pay for a phone and find out it's half-baked, while if a 'free' web service doesn't work, it's easy to switch.

It's also about branding and culture, people expect different things from each company. That has pros and cons.

MikeCapone··on Melatonin
I take 1.5 mg every night before going to bed. It has solved pretty much all my sleep problems, and allows me to control my sleeping schedule much more easily (ie. on weekdays I go to bed at 12:15 AM, but on weekends I usually go to bed at 3 AM. I have no problem re-transitioning back to weekday schedule now, but I used to).
MikeCapone··on The copyright cartel's plot to indoctrinate California kindergartens
Tell that to the U.S. founding fathers...
MikeCapone··on My time with the Steam Controller
For those interested in the development of the game Super Meat boy, the documentary _Indie Game_ follows the two developers during the making of the game, as well as the makers of Fez.

I thought it was a good film.

MikeCapone··on Happy Petrov day
Indeed. If you want to find out more, the best book that I've found on this subject is _Global Catastrophic Risks_, edited by Nick Bostrom and Milan M. Cirkovic:

http://www.amazon.com/Global-Catastrophic-Risks-Nick-Bostrom...

"In Global Catastrophic Risks 25 leading experts look at the gravest risks facing humanity in the 21st century, including asteroid impacts, gamma-ray bursts, Earth-based natural catastrophes, nuclear war, terrorism, global warming, biological weapons, totalitarianism, advanced nanotechnology, general artificial intelligence, and social collapse. The book also addresses over-arching issues - policy responses and methods for predicting and managing catastrophes. "

MikeCapone··on World record solar cell with 44.7% efficiency
Absolutely. I should have been more precise.

I think that for maximizing the amount of electricity generated via solar power, price/watt matters most.

MikeCapone··on World record solar cell with 44.7% efficiency
Efficiency matters, but price/watt matters more and there's still room for a kind of moore's law there.
MikeCapone··on Fairfax strikes $4.7-billion deal to buy BlackBerry
Well-known Canadian conglomerate, mostly doing insurance and reinsurance, but with some other operational buisnesses. Headed by Prem Watsa, often called the "Warren Buffett of Canada".

MikeCapone··on Google announces Calico, a new company that will focus on health and well-being
Absolutely. Right now money is the bottleneck for the things that SENS is doing, so rich companies joining in are very welcome, as is the mainstream coverage that will come with them (hopefully resulting in more donations).
MikeCapone··on Google announces Calico, a new company that will focus on health and well-being
This is great if they do take the engineering approach of SENS and Aubrey de Grey. Ideally they would partner with SENS.org since they already have a lot of the infrastructure set up.
MikeCapone··on Microsoft and Google to sue over US surveillance requests
> Yep...we have no proof of Google or Microsoft being complicit in NSA surveillance.

The top secret internal NSA documents saying they were partners in PRISM with colorful logos and all weren't enough?

MikeCapone··on Why Wal-Mart Will Never Pay Like Costco
To which I'll add: the past helps better understand the present...
MikeCapone··on CIA is largest US spy agency, according to black budget leaked by Edward Snowden
If it was the only thing he ever released, I would agree with you. But in the context of what has been shown before, I think it fits for reasons I stated up-thread.
MikeCapone··on CIA is largest US spy agency, according to black budget leaked by Edward Snowden
Well, it is less expensive to build data-centers and tap fiber-optic lines than to send rockets to orbit and probes to Mars... (especially the way NASA does it compared to, say, SpaceX.. but that's another discussion)

But in any case, I think it's fine to get these numbers public because it's still taxpayer money. I think it would've been worse of Snowden NOT to release numbers just because they aren't as shocking as they could've been.

Transparency should be about showing you what's there, not about cherry-picking things to form a narrative that distorts what is there.

MikeCapone··on CIA is largest US spy agency, according to black budget leaked by Edward Snowden
> More importantly though.. what purpose does leaking this serve? It shows nothing illegal, or even questionable. It has nothing to do with the documents leaked previously. I just don't understand why he thought this needed to be leaked.

Maybe it's about taxpayers knowing where their dollars are going? First you show that your government is spying on you, and then you show how much of your own money that costs..?

MikeCapone··on Why Wal-Mart Will Never Pay Like Costco
True, but I never said it was a book about today's Walmart, just that I found it interesting to learn about that company's history and that I recommend the book.
MikeCapone··on Why Wal-Mart Will Never Pay Like Costco
Indeed. Not sure what that has to do with what I wrote. The history of Walmart is still the same, and that's what I found so interesting.
MikeCapone··on Why Wal-Mart Will Never Pay Like Costco
A lot of what I knew about Walmart came from third party sources (activists, whatever), so I decided to go to a primary and read Sam Walton's book, and I must say it gave me a new appreciation and understanding for the vast machine that is Walmart. I highly recommend it:

MikeCapone··on On Apple’s A7 Processor
What kind of margins can they expect, though? The Wintel duopoly was very good to them, but nothing similar exists in mobile (except maybe Apple chips + iOS). They can't be as dominant and successful, with great pricing power, as just another supplier...
