MikeCapone··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
He still owns over 40% of Oracle, that's a much bigger equity stake than most founders, and most of these other trillion-dollar companies don't have founders in charge anymore.
MikeCapone··on JPEG XL and the Pareto Front
I really hope this can become a new standard and be available everywhere (image tools, browsers, etc).

While in practice it won't change my life much, I like the elegance of using a modern standard with this level of performance an efficiency.

MikeCapone··on Lithium “shortage” bubble implodes again
Why is the low of 2020 the right level to benchmark from?
MikeCapone··on Request: Re-open JPEG XL issue
JPEG XL looks like a great format, I hope it takes over.

I get that most bandwidth goes to video, but it would still be nice to have a great modern standard for images.

MikeCapone··on Nuclear Power Is the Answer to Global and Environmental Energy Woes
France has been mismanaging its fleet and signally for years that they want to move away from it, under-investing in it, etc. It's not the technology's fault.

Germany had some of the best managed plants in the world -- until they decided to shut them down, leading to more coal being burned and more dependence on other countries like Russia...

MikeCapone··on Nuclear power is too slow
It's because the US Navy can just decide to do it without years of red tape and mountains of paperwork. National security cuts through the red tape.

I don't think the government owning civilian reactors would help if they don't reform the process that means it takes 10+ years and millions of pages of documentation to get anything done.

MikeCapone··on Nuclear power is too slow
The US Navy could be quite quick building reactors and innovating, because it didn't have to go through the same amount of regulation. They've operated lots and lots of reactors with very little problems for decades.
MikeCapone··on Largest EU economy can reach 100% ‘clean energy’ by 2035
How do they deal with variability of all these renewables? Where is all that storage going to come from?

Only realistic path is nuclear, but it'll take longer than 2035.

MikeCapone··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Agreed if what is taking so long makes a difference.

I suspect a lot of it is red tape without a real benefit...

MikeCapone··on Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points
That's why we're also electrifying transportation, should push for heat pumps in buildings, etc, but yeah, there's a lot to do. Not dealing with electricity doesn't help the rest, though.
MikeCapone··on Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points
Wind & solar are great for what they are, but they aren't dispatchable, and we're better using battery capacity for EVs rather than the grid.
MikeCapone··on Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points
And we're shutting down nuclear power plants? How about we do what France did in the 70s-80s and solve this problem once and for all.
MikeCapone··on Nobody optimizes happiness
The book 'Stumbling on Happiness' by Dan Gilbert is great on this topic.

People are very bad at predicting what will make them happy. Much better to see what people who are happy now actually did, rather than imagine what will make you happy.

MikeCapone··on Apple Unveils M2
In similar size/weight laptop class?
MikeCapone··on What good cash-strapped hiring looks like
There's a podcast interview with the author, Cedric Chin, here:

https://www.libertyrpf.com/p/cedric-chin-what-operators-can-...

Covers the study of expertise and a bunch of different topics (operators vs investors, etc). It doesn't cover hiring specifically.

MikeCapone··on 1 TW of solar to be deployed annually by 2030
The problem with battery supply is that it would be better to use that supply on EVs to displace oil rather than on massive stationary grid storage for intermittent sources.

Instead, for the maximum cleaning up of energy, we should build nuclear for the grid and use batteries on transportation.

MikeCapone··on My essential Firefox fixes in 2022
The primary reason why I don't use Firefox on the Mac is because there's a bug that makes keyboard text-replacement-shortcuts not work (ie. you write some pre-defined keyword and it gets replaced by something else, like replacing "" with "¯\_(ツ)_/¯" )
MikeCapone··on I shaved 187MB off United Airlines' 439MB iOS app
I think the Stripe app is like 20 megs, Overcast even smaller than that.
MikeCapone··on Bitcoin mining is being banned in countries across the globe
They help fight seasonal depression, very very useful.
MikeCapone··on Why are German numbers backwards?
Not that it matters too much, but what you speller out is 98, not 99
MikeCapone··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
This 6-part video series by Nick Milo is a great way for newbies to get introduced to Obsidian and go up the learning curve rapidly:

MikeCapone··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
You can configure them to 16gb (as per Apple's website).
MikeCapone··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
This isn't inductive charging, though. Just a magnet that keeps the physical wired connection together.
MikeCapone··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
Hopefully it'll be on the larger model.

I think they may segment it as "iMac Pro"

MikeCapone··on Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders
They're not bragging, they're saying it to counter the media narrative about them.

I think a lot of white collar workers (ie. journalists and people reading certain papers) are shocked to find out that warehouse/blue collar jobs are hard and not paid great. It says more about the reader than anything else.. I'd wager that conditions are a lot better at Amazon than at some random warehouse where people are working out of the media spotlight.

Also, if you have over 1 million employees, you can always find plenty of stories of things that went wrong, kind of like in a 1-million population city there's always plenty of stuff going on.

MikeCapone··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
There's already been large scale phase 3 trials, and we've deal with vaccines for decades, they're not entirely novel and unknown each time.
MikeCapone··on Nvidia Unveils Grace: A High-Performance Arm CPU for Use in Big AI Systems
I doubt it, it's not like the market for acceleration is stagnant and saturated and they need to steal some marketshare points from one side to help the other.

It's all greenfield and growing so far, they'll win more by having the very best products they can make on both sides.

MikeCapone··on Microprocessors Running on Air?
The author isn't a native english speaker.
MikeCapone··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2020)
Substack is hiring:

MikeCapone··on Nvidia’s Integration Dreams
They'd rather sell the picks & shovels to AWS, Azure and GCP.
