> Andrew James Bridgen[2] (born 28 October 1964) is a British politician and businessman who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for North West Leicestershire since 2010. He was a member of the Conservative Party until his expulsion in April 2023, having had the whip suspended in January after criticising the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines and claiming that an Israeli cardiologist told him it constitutes "the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust".

…

> In March 2023, Bridgen posted tweets promoting a conspiracy theory claiming that COVID-19 originated at Fort Detrick.[86]

> On 29 February 2024, Bridgen referenced capital punishment as an appropriate response to "crimes against humanity" regarding the vaccine rollout.[87]

Is he not?

Matheus28··on Boeing's largest plant in 'panic mode' amid safety crisis, say workers and union
The one thing I like is that I've seen them in 1-2 and 2-2 seating configurations for the entire cabin. It's quite nice. The overhead space is almost negligible though, it doesn't fit a standard carry on.

I feel that I’ve started seeing Embraer planes a lot more often over the years. If you’ve flown some regional routes, you most likely flew in one of them at some point

>I don't think anyone here is saying we shouldn't have the word "transpiler" at all

This thread chain is in response to jerf's comment "transpiler shouldn't be a word" (simplifying his comment for brevity's sake)

Matheus28··on Borgo is a statically typed language that compiles to Go
In that statement, it doesn't really add anything.

In the statement "XYZ is a compiler/transpiler", it does. It doesn't hurt to have a word that is more specific than others. Otherwise we should just refer to compilers as an "app" :)

Matheus28··on Borgo is a statically typed language that compiles to Go
1. Transpilers output to another programming language that is typically written by hand by others (so not assembly).

2. Transpilers don’t typically optimize code, leaving those transformations to the compiler of the target language.

3. Compilers will typically have an internal representation (SSA) which they operate on to optimize. Transpilers typically operate on the AST (because they don’t need to do any but the most trivial optimizations).

There are exceptions to the rules but these cover the majority of the reasons on why people make the distinction.

It wasn’t an option when I setup my S3+cloudflare sites. It sounds like an excellent solution now.
Matheus28··on Netlify just sent me a $104k bill for a simple static site
For static sites my choice is usually CloudFlare in front of a S3 bucket. It costs pennies. With cloudflare R2 it might be even easier.

Matheus28··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
I assumed you're saying someone with exclusively sim experience could do a decent landing on the first try (that is: on center line, no bounces, not too hard, no floating for thousands of feet) & without much help. Please correct if my assumption is wrong.

I just don't think that's possible. Most CFIs will be making inputs to make sure the landing doesn't endanger anyone. The student won't even realize it's the instructor making these corrections as they'll think it's the wind acting upon the control surfaces that are pushing the controls a bit. What I'm essentially saying is that the instructor was helping you way more than you think he was.

Sims don't really teach how to make good landings because you don't feel how hard the landing was.

Matheus28··on The C++20 Naughty and Nice List for Game Devs
You can use clang for windows builds. It’s what I use for my games. However, I assume that most popular engines might not compile on clang+windows for random reasons.
Matheus28··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
I hate to break it to you, but the CFI was on the controls as well.
Matheus28··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
When you’re flying VFR, you need to be able to feel where the plane is going and how your inputs are received. Your eyes should be outside 95% of the time, also because you also need to be looking out for traffic.

Using a simulator doesn’t let you build that feel, so you end up spending a lot of time looking at the instruments. When you step into a real plane that can make things difficult, as you’re supposed to be able to maintain altitude by just looking outside, etc.

Matheus28··on The best WebAssembly runtime may be no runtime
It doesn’t look like you know what webassembly is supposed to solve. It has nothing to do with styling. It’s about deploying native code in a safe sandboxed way. It’s not just about web pages. My use of wasm is web games that perform a lot better than anyone could achieve with JavaScript.
Matheus28··on Why is "pineapple" in English "ananas" in other languages? (2013)
Etymology for abacaxi: Borrowed from Old Tupi ibakatí.

Is Portuguese your native language? I can’t see how one would pronounce abacaxi in a way that sounds like ananas.

Matheus28··on Why is "pineapple" in English "ananas" in other languages? (2013)
I'm sure that table omits languages in which it looks nothing like "ananas". In Brazilian Portuguese it's "abacaxi". The second response in that question seems to address this.

Matheus28··on WASI: WebAssembly System Interface
You don’t understand how WebAssembly works. You severely misunderstand how the VM secures itself. Listen to what all the other comments are trying to teach you. There are no security vulnerabilities in your code.

For simplicity, pretend any pointer dereference is a function call with the address as its argument. The VM makes sure it’s within the range of valid values every time. There is no executable code in that range either, only data. Further, function pointers are not real pointers, just an index into a table which again, is checked on any indirect function call.

In practice the memory is secured by allocating a 4 GiB aligned memory range and just masking off the pointer on every access so it’s within that memory. This way there’s very little to no overhead, depending on the architecture.
