LordOfWolves··on Stripe’s payments APIs: the first ten years
I really liked Stripe until recently.

Their support and “code of ethics” completely failed me however in a recent startup.

A cofounder was able to remove me from our Stripe account, and despite having another account linked to nearly 10 sub-accounts (for different businesses/clients), support essentially completely ignored me. I sent all documentation you can imagine, including legal documents showing my ownership in the business, all to no avail.

Never have I felt more powerless and betrayed.

LordOfWolves··on IBM Is Already Gutting Red Hat and Firing Employees Without Warning
Does anyone else see this more likely to be “mere” reductions in staff due to a presumed decline in business due to the global pandemic, rather than some nefarious plot to gut Red Hat?
LordOfWolves··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
I use a VPN on my home network and do not see any records via this website.

Am I missing something, or is my impression that this tool can “see through” tunneled traffic false?

LordOfWolves··on Show HN: Query 1.6B rows in milliseconds, live
How nice of you to hijack the back-button (to return to HN after some sample queries) despite that being how myself & others found this in the first place.

I was really liking the product up until that point.

LordOfWolves··on FDA halts coronavirus testing program backed by Bill Gates
Beyond the reliability of the tests, which has also been questioned of those by Abbot Labs (the same tests administered to the President), the FDA states they simply need further inquiry.

Tests do not inject you with any form of matter or fluid. Why are we completely halting testing, even if it is only 1/3 correct? Just disclose that fact to the testee and/or use 3 tests for a statistically significant result.

Does this reek of backdoor capitalism (corruption)?

LordOfWolves··on Port knocking
I enjoyed your story, but can you please elaborate on what your intercom is / was for?

I understand the key fob/card concept for access purposes, but have never heard of an “intercom” in the context of home/apartment/etc security.

LordOfWolves··on Physics Today is temporarily making its archive freely available
It’d be great if we could actually archive this “archive”, but alas, it is behind a (temporarily disabled) paywall, which first requires user registration and login.
LordOfWolves··on SoftBank to write down WeWork by $6.6B, compounding portfolio misery
This sounds a bit similar to - and just as ludicrous as - American taxpayers financially assisting or “bailing out” massive companies which were/are so bad at cash flow management that their runway was/is only 1-3 months, despite hundreds of millions - if not billions - in annual revenue and a varying chunk of that being profit.
LordOfWolves··on Are we too busy to enjoy life?
Regardless of the article’s timing, the question remains. Are we too busy in modern society? Do we make ourselves busy to feel better about ourselves as a proxy to productivity? Is being busy (e.g., involving the brain in various scenarios throughout the day) necessary to maintain a prescient mind? Can we potentially be less busy yet generally happier?

I’d argue the answers to these questions are all “yes”, but alas, I have no scientific data to back my claim, purely anecdotes.

If one is not struggling for basic needs, the current global situation truly shines a light on which “time sucks” in your life are/were/will be actually worth the effort and time moving forward (once past this health crisis). From personal experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been more grateful for my relationships with my family, following the passing of several individuals whom I’ve known for 20+ years.

LordOfWolves··on How I lost control of our bank accounts to a phone scammer
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Plaid uses an OAuth-Luke experience via an external tab/window to an encrypted sub domain of their website for authentication (so no middle man sniffing technically possible).

Disclaimer: I do not work for Plaid, but have used it in the past.

LordOfWolves··on Private Kit: Can we slow the spread without giving up individual privacy?
Sadly, I do not see Private Kit reaching anywhere close to the critical mass required for it to be fully effective, unless all Americans are required to use it per a new federal mandate, which I cannot see becoming a reality given the incompetency clearly exhibited by one or more of our "leaders" over the past several days (if not much longer)..
LordOfWolves··on CSS Zen Garden
Enjoyed reading your POV on this. Thanks for sharing.
LordOfWolves··on Show HN: I made a point of sale system with self-service for mobile devices
Lengthy load times are detrimental to UX. Just look at how people are increasingly less likely to wait for a page to finish loading with every additional second it takes to load [1, 2].

In regards to feedback from users, this is especially true when finding product-market-fit (when an idea actually becomes a business). There’s nothing better than learning what customers who actually use your product want in future releases/improvements. It’s a case of building based off actual demand versus based off a hypothetical in one’s mind (a very common “failing”, i.e. learning experience, for first-time founders). Only when your product grows to the point of attracting potential customers outside your target demographic should you not place tremendous value on every single piece of feedback.

LordOfWolves··on Fed reinstates multi-trillion dollar bailout program for Wall Street
I initially found the article’s attitude against the Fed’s noted actions surprising, but slowly a bias from the author surfaced, particularly after I started seeing phrases like “toxic waste” and “a secret from the American people”. I am not saying Wall St. and/or/nor the Fed’s actions (or lack thereof) were correct for the time (2008), but this seemingly personal vendetta does not make for a valuable, objective piece of journalism. The author even notes herself as “an outspoken critic“ on the About page [1].

LordOfWolves··on Whiteboard exercises are a terrible way to investigate coding ability (2012)
I organically discovered this many years ago when attempting to learn my first recursive algorithm by writing out its final result step-by-step on a whiteboard. Definitely went through more than one marker.
LordOfWolves··on New iPad Pro with LiDAR Scanner and trackpad support
Like other commenters, I will never buy another iPad unless it comes preloaded with a desktop-like operating system (like macOS) versus iOS.

One would think Apple has explored doing this - putting OSX/macOS on an iPad - given that Microsoft put Windows on the Surface and gained market share as a result.

Why they haven't released any consumer/commercial iPads with a desktop-like operating system, an OS whose first versions were able to run on a 7.8 MHz processor (the Motorola 68000) and 128 KB of RAM, is beyond me. Of course the more recent the OS, the greater the hardware requirements, but I do not see it impossible to "fit" a version of OSX/macOS to a tablet.

Does it all come down to avoiding cannibalization of Macbook Air sales?

LordOfWolves··on Playstation 5
> Sony was planning a much bigger reveal in a few weeks at GDC in SF, but, well, COVID-19 happened. So here we are with a live-streamed version of the event, offering far and away the deepest dive into the next-gen console.

I wonder how far we are from purely digital launches for many products.

Aside: TechCrunch should really stop hijacking the back button. You shouldn't have to possess frontend development skills to know how to disable the intrusive JS which powers this.

LordOfWolves··on Coronavirus Funding for Your Startup
I'd like to know what percentage of revenues they request in practice (according to their press page [1], it is between 1-10%).

If you are located within the U.S., is the primary benefit of utilizing Corl over the US' SBA the fact that payback is via revenue-sharing versus interest on debt (the size of the loan)?

LordOfWolves··on Outsourced Profits – The Cornerstone of Succesful Subcontracting [pdf]
According to its homepage, the website is not affiliated with YC but serves as an aggregator of top articles from HN (updated weekly).

It looks like the site itself was submitted to HN three times by user "cloudjk", with its second submission seeing the most popularity: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19626404.

LordOfWolves··on Outsourced Profits – The Cornerstone of Succesful Subcontracting [pdf]
A "quick take" from another post on HN regarding this document [1]:

"It offers a detailed look at Douglas Aircraft and their doomed attempt to boost profits via outsourcing.

Those familiar with the commercial aviation business know that Boeing's "purchase" of McDonnell-Douglas resulted in wholesale importation of Douglas's accounting wizardry to what had been a largely engineering- and safety-driven corporate culture.

Relevance to the MAX fiasco and the tardiness of Boeing's NMA designs is left as an exercise to the reader…"

LordOfWolves··on 54,443 individual Coronavirus case details. Multiple sources, updating hourly
The title led me to believe I'd find a novel way of exploring coronavirus data at the target link. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and as such, I believe the title should be that of the (5 minute) blog post: "Novel Coronavirus Dataset in Dolt: A Case for Branches".
LordOfWolves··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
Unfortunately, price regulations on textbooks (however possible) would only affect the individuals "consuming" those textbooks, the majority of which are traditional students.

This has been a problem for many years. Why the price of a textbook for a particular course are not paid for via the cost(s) of that particular course is beyond me. I am all for solving this problem, but it is one of many.

LordOfWolves··on Are Heroku and Heroku-hosted sites down?
Can we please fix the title of this post and/or its link?

It currently takes you to Heroku's homepage, which contains no information relevant to the post's title.

LordOfWolves··on Our Experience with Stripe Atlas
Attempted Stripe Atlas user here. While the product looks great, it doesn’t cover all corner cases of business creation, so we ended up not being able to use it. It turns out that following this revelation, we had to scrap the associated Stripe account just to be able to rid ourselves of the “complete your Atlas application” (or similar) at the top of the dashboard too. Just one anecdote.
LordOfWolves··on Consider: Email 2.0
Hey everyone, here’s our new service, but sorry, you can’t actually sign up and use it. We aren’t actually even sure we have a product yet, just a landing page for it. Subscribe for updates though...

LordOfWolves··on Bankers Go Home, Tellers Stay: Virus Exposes Office Inequalities
How is this inequality more so than it is simple role differentiation?

Can tellers not be trained for better-paying roles? Better yet, education is available to those who wish to utilize it (though the education system clearly has its own inefficiencies).

LordOfWolves··on Y Combinator Top Companies List 2019
Have you been on Reddit lately? Beyond the most mainstream posts, most subs (and their participants) are full of toxicity. I've tried posting helpful comments on there to my detriment.
LordOfWolves··on Ask HN: Is Reddit still toxic even after all their “changes”?
100% there with you. Looking for an alternative as well. I like "The Information" (no referral link here) but it's tech-focused. I would love something like Reddit but not censored or toxic.
LordOfWolves··on Ask HN: Is Reddit still toxic even after all their “changes”?
That happened to be the same experience I had with "my" "moderator".

Behavior like this should not be carpeted over with PR "here's how we're going to fix things" announcements, like the one they advertised today and/or yesterday. At the very least, Reddit moderators need some extent to the control they have and repercussions for crossing lines when done so. It's really too bad, because the platform could be so much more. Instead, it's either cute animal photos or some of the worst toxicity you can find online.
