LandR··on Gemini can't show me the fastest way to copy memory in C# because it's unethical
I'm not convinced.

Most software I use today is awful, but then again it is so much more complicated. It is rare thought that I use something that had one purpose and does it well.

Interacting with a computer has never been more frustrating imo. It might be a lot of small niggly things but it feels like death by a thousand cuts.

LandR··on YouTube's ban leads to a record number of users uninstalling their ad-blockers
Thanks, this seems to work for me!
LandR··on YouTube's ban leads to a record number of users uninstalling their ad-blockers
Possibly. I didn't know this was a thing!

This isn't working for me on Firefox / uBlock and Ubuntu :(

I don't get the popup, but the video is just black and the play button does nothing.

LandR··on Autopay is making us worse at managing credit-card bills
I'm in the UK and have my cc setup to auto pay the full balance each month too. However I use my credit card for everything except my direct debits like mortgage, utilities etc.

Literally everything else is on credit card. I just get much more protection. It I buy on debit card then I need to get my money back (doesn't arrive, faulty etc) it's so much more of a hassle.

LandR··on New tarantula species discovered in Thailand
Why not ?

It's a really cool spider! And I say this as someone that is pretty terrified of all spiders.

LandR··on How do we pay for parking?
In my city, in the rougher parts it used to be somewhat normal to pay someone to "look after your car", of course you were paying them not to vandalise it while you were away! Especially popular on football days when parking near the stadium.

It was only a couple of pounds or so. I haven't been to these parts of town for years so I have no idea if this practice still goes on.

LandR··on Dear Aliens
20 crashes,

At out current level of airline safety, how many flights would we need to fly to get to 20 crashes.

We must be close to around 1 crash a year?

So 20 years... In 1 year we have around 20 million flights... 400 million flights to get to 20 crashes.

I'm gonna assume advanced aliens are at least an order of magnitude better. There isn't a billion of these things in the sky..

So yeah, there safety level for such an advanced thing seems a bit shit.

I just don't believe they would crash this often to even have 10-20 crafts.

The whole premise seems absurd.

LandR··on Dear Aliens
Surely though, if you can take travel near light speed you need a detection and maneuverability system so advanced, because any impact is game over, that pottering around at non relativistic speeds should be an absolute doddle.
LandR··on Dear Aliens
I want to know how they apparently have advanced tech that allows them to travel the vast distances of space, and if certain people are to be believed, have crafts capable of astonishing maneuvers we can't match... Yet, they crash all the time...
LandR··on The underground economy of Glassdoor reviews
I'd happily talk religion, trans rights, racism etc with anyone at work.

But then I'm not paranoid , and Ive never worked anyplace in 20 years where I feel people are being dishonest or disingenuous or playing any sort of games. especially not mind games, that's fucking absurd to me that you would even think that at all.

What sort of people are you working for, that sounds like hell.

I've always been in offices, and worked for managers I've gone and got drunk with and talked about all sorts of shit. it's never been an issue.

If US office culture Is as you describe it, it sounds fucking awful.

LandR··on The underground economy of Glassdoor reviews
This is absolutely crazy to a European.
LandR··on Terrible real estate agent photographs
The one with the all the white / biege colour books, I'd actually love to have all my books on my bookshelves with the same colour. I like all my books, but I think it's quite ugly with how different all the colours are.

Obviously I'd still want to have the name of the book on the spine though. Or to be able to have it colour coded by genre or something, just something more aesthetically pleasing really.

LandR··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
Yeah same here, almost the entire landing page that I can see on my monitor is immediately just Disney+ advertising.

Nothing at all to hint I'm on nationalgeographic.com

LandR··on Titanic tourist sub photos show wreckage being brought ashore
Worked on a software system for deep sea cranes, where they wanted us to be able to support them having 4000-8000m cables on the crane.
LandR··on The Password Game
Thanks! That worked, it was a check.
LandR··on The Password Game
I'm stuck on the chess one.

The best move is Queen to e8, which I'm sure is represented in algebraic notation as Qe8. But it says that Qe8 is invalid notation.

LandR··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
This is why I dont understand why people expect UFOs to have lights on them. Or when they see lights they go to UFO.

Why ? Why would external lights be helpful when travelling interstellar distances. Then if you have the technology to travel these vast distances so quickly, why would you need lights when darting about at "slow" terrestrial speeds, the technology you must have to navigate and avoid things must be so beyond just lights... You almost certainly aren't navigating in anything that remotely resembles looking out your craft ?

It just makes no sense to me. IT's why I assume if anyone mentions a UFO when talking about lights in the sky I'm totally convinced it's terrestrial in nature.

LandR··on One million cancel broadband as living costs rise
Annoyingly, I just got a new mobile contract as I was leaving BT and moved to EE.

I had agreed to a price of £x per month. After 2 weeks, I hadn't even had my first bill in, I got a letter saying the price was going up because of inflation...

2 weeks!

LandR··on Fuck being productive
I'm not sure I follow, it sounds like do something long enough to get good and it will become a passion...

That almost sounds like a sort of Stockholm syndrome...

LandR··on Meta says about 10% of its global ad revenue at risk from EU data flows order
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
LandR··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
My new washing machine has touch buttons to start it and pause it.

I normally have to push start a few times to get it to actually start, and there is no feedback that I've even pushed start at all. So I don't know if it's just not registered the push, or it has and it's just not doing anything.

It's so dumb, I don't know what is wrong with a physical button.

LandR··on Gamers 50-plus are a growing force in the tech market
I've been really enjoying Dead Cells recently for this exact reason.

It's a castlevania style rogue game, I can turn it on, play for 30-60 mins and turn it off again.

SImple controls, hard, a bit different each time, fun.

LandR··on Ban all gambling adverts, say more than half of Britons
Same here, haven't paid a Tv licence in years. Even told them I don't need one. Doesn't stop the idiots sending me threatning letters every month.
LandR··on My high-flying life as a corporate spy who lied his way to the top
For my current job I had to get proof of my degree, institution and grade.

Thos was for a degree between 1999 and 2003.

They wanted info down to the month I started... I had no idea so just guessed a month in 1999... They got back to me to check what was up as they had determined I actually started in some other month...

They even wanted proof of what High school I went to.

Some companies are super thorough!

LandR··on The emotional roller coaster of changing requirements
^^^ This.

If I do a weeks work on getting a feature ready, and then product decide to change all the requirements around and it needs redone. Why do I care ? I still get paid for that weeks work...

Next week I'll rework the requirements, and I'll get paid for that weeks work too!
