Interesting. "anal" is a bad word in English, but not in German. On the other hand, "naked" is a bad word in German, but not in English.

Maybe I should send a pull request...

Since the Wired page doesn't work with ad blockers, here's an archived link: http://archive.is/TU5ev

The article is more about the planned obsolescence of the iPhone (and by extension the down-to-the-last-screw-copy of it), btw.

Kristine1975··on Why we shouldn't protect teenagers from controversial issues in fiction
>teenagers contribute nothing to the GDP. we could ignore them completely

Yes, let's reduce people to their economic value.

Also pocket money.

Ahem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_censorship_in_the_United_...

I realize the SJW bogeyman is en vogue these days, but censorship in the US has a long and sordid history completely without them.

Honestly I doubt that "SJW" would have a problem with e.g. Harry Potter, The Handmaid's Tale and Annie on my Mind: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_commonly_challeng...

Nice. Are there more important issues? Sure there are. But then again there are more important issues than Unicode emoji in general.

The whole ONES... HASZERO shenanigans is somewhat explained here: https://graphics.stanford.edu/~seander/bithacks.html#ZeroInW... as well as the entry after it.

Edit: And most likely in the excellent book "Hacker's Delight" as well.

Kristine1975··on Teaching C
On MacOS Classic (no memory protection) you can happily write to address zero and replace whatever is stored there (I think Apple wisely left that memory address unused, though).
Kristine1975··on Teaching C
std::array is in C++11
Kristine1975··on Teaching C
Although char should not be used to store numbers, since its signedness is implementation-defined (gcc has the switch -funsigned-chars I think to make them unsigned instead of signed). signed char/unsigned char are ok.
Kristine1975··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
I wonder how your grandmother would feel about you bringing her into this discussion.

Also just because there are worse things than verbal sexual harassment doesn't mean it should be ignored.

Kristine1975··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
Contrary to other animals humans are capable of keeping their instincts in check. In fact one could argue that this ability is what elevates humans above other primates. So being a human with a sex drive is no excuse for calling others MILF.
Kristine1975··on Mozilla has asked Pale Moon to “police” their forum
This seems to be the correct post: https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.php?t=11810

Previous thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11507858

The post:

I was contacted by Mozilla with the request to "police" our forum, since we (Pale Moon devs) are in direct control of the things discussed and posted here.

I'd like to clarify our position on this kind of thing to keep things from becoming unpleasant in both our relationship with you, the community, and our relationship with Mozilla:

- We do not censor your posts, and this will not change in the future -- this is an open forum.

- Everyone has a right to their opinions and those opinions can be freely discussed here.

- While technically possible to tightly control content here, we do not wish to do so as it does not create a healthy environment to discuss things in, which is the whole point of a forum. We will, however, control extreme behavior that is not constructive.

- On the other hand, we'd like to see anything that can be construed as misinformation or purposefully misleading posts be kept out of this forum.

- If you're going to post anything about Mozilla that you don't know for a fact is accurate, then please don't purposefully try to present it as hard facts.

This is a community forum, but it is also a public forum. Please be mindful of your posts.

We'd prefer to keep a healthy relationship with Mozilla and the Mozilla Security team since we do rely on them greatly to be able to keep bringing you Pale Moon in an organized and safe manner. We won't, however, let Mozilla dictate how we as a community should operate.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kristine1975··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
I completely agree as far as expressing interest goes. Calling someone a MILF however is out of line (IMO).

Kristine1975··on Ask HN: How do I deal with the first sexual harassment complaint at my startup?
Not sure about asking a co-worker out, but calling someone a MILF (Mom I'd Like to Fuck) sounds like sexual harrassment to me.

Kristine1975··on [dead]
OP was deleted because of https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/4ik6wk/im_planning_my...

Here it is (from Google's cache):

My short bio: I'm a writer and programmer, and have terminal cancer. I'm slowly unwinding my life and planning my death. I'm using my own case to study how the living and the dying talk, to attack the taboos over cancer and death, and to make dying a more positive, social process. More details in the link below.

My Proof: http://hintjens.com/blog:115 (scroll down for scan of summary report from my hospital stay, in French).

To be clear, I'm not sure when I'm going to die. I've metastasis in both lungs, and colon. Bile duct cancer does not respond to chemo, as a rule. My oncologists are pessimistic and I'm on palliative care at home now. That is my data, the basis for the rest of my life.

Kristine1975··on Code Page 437 Refuses to Die

Which can result in files with seemingly identical names when one UTF-8-encoded file name uses combining characters and the other one uses precomposed ones. Not to mention the fact that e.g. Å is contained in Unicode as both "latin capital letter A with ring above" and "Angstrom sign".

After you've solved encoding, next comes Unicode normalization ;-)
