KevinEldon··on Night-time in America's small towns
I grew up in a small town (rural Tennessee fewer than 10k people) and Walmart is a godsend. Their scale reduces cost and gives easy access to a myriad of products that local mom-and-pop shops could never provide. It's good for people with limited income to get more for less of their money. I know it hurts some local businesses whose models can't keep up, but that's business. The people in my small town were better off because of Walmart. Amazon has taken over where Walmart started; Amazon Prime is a one of the most amazing and practical innovations.
KevinEldon··on Uber Taps Eric Holder to Investigate Discrimination Claims
The real test is how Uber specifically addresses Susan Fowler's comments. If they recognize issues, create programs, wave hands, weep openly, hire someone to yell "shame", etc. then it's all about correcting how they are perceived. It's understandable.

If they pay Susan something larger than an annual salary and request that other female employees who suffered similar mistreatment come forward for similar compensation then they're serious about resolving the issue permanently and addressing their mistakes (I'm imagining Uber running ads like a personal injury lawyer 'are you a woman, have you worked at Uber corporate, were you sexually harassed and mistreated, please call Uber for $150k or more in compensation for the wrongs you were forced to endure).

No company actively prosecutes themselves. No lawyer seeks outcomes that aren't aligned with their client's best possible outcomes. Eric Holder, despite his name recognition and alignment w/ President Obama, is not there to help women who work at or have worked at Uber. He's there to help Uber look better.

I don't know. I'd guess either the practical 2A.BAT or the clever NOT2B.BAT
KevinEldon··on Dakota Access Pipeline to win US Army permit for completion
It would help your argument if you cited public records. Is there a news story, social media discussion, some other documentation of the incident? Do we know who was involved... was it law enforcement or private security? Was the protester in a space they legally had access to or had they moved onto privately owned land?
KevinEldon··on Remote Work Terminology – what you should know
This was helpful if for nothing else than to illustrate how nuanced the remote work conversation can be. I've also seen companies with a publicly strict on-site policies that are "remote friendly" (remote tolerant?). I agree completely with the author that these are jobs to be careful of.
KevinEldon··on Remote Work Terminology – what you should know
I didn't get a popup.
KevinEldon··on Remote Work Is Not a Perk
This short post got me thinking...

Is a working outside the office culture different than a remote work culture? I work from home frequently (some full days, some partial days) but can be in the office any day if needed or if it makes sense. It seems like this is different then what some people would understand "Remote work" to be.

KevinEldon··on Stop Obsessing Over Comments On Hacker News (2015)
I believe you're saying the devil has many advocates here.
KevinEldon··on HandBrake 1.0.0 Released
It's funny you should say that because the one time Handbrake failed for me Bill Brasky showed me how to hand solder my CPU, and I'd be your aunt if it didn't fix Handbrake. Bill Brasky, RIP.
KevinEldon··on Font Awesome 5 Kickstarter
Nice production quality and it looks like an interesting upgrade and investment. But I can't find the actual Kickstarter page. Anyone know where it is?
KevinEldon··on Wikileaks: Julian Assange's internet access 'cut'

KevinEldon··on Wikileaks: Julian Assange's internet access 'cut'
It's a screen cap of a comment. SFW
KevinEldon··on The US just bombed Yemen, and no one's talking about it
I was referring specifically to the missles fired at the US destroyer and the bombing of the Houthi radar installations, not the conflict in Yemen.

I can agree that the election sells more ads than substantive coverage of world events and did learn some things from the Source piece.

KevinEldon··on The US just bombed Yemen, and no one's talking about it
I knew about this earlier in the week due to coverage on the Fox News and/or CNN networks.
KevinEldon··on Modern Software Over-Engineering Mistakes
Or "You have Big Data". Paraphrasing Greg Young's idea, "If you can put it on a Micro SD card that you can buy on Amazon, you don't have big data". So if your data fits in 128GB ($37.77 on Amazon right now) you don't need big data solutions.
KevinEldon··on Amy Goodman Is Facing Prison for Reporting on the Dakota Access Pipeline
Are journalists immune from laws? Which laws? What constitutes a journalist? These are the kinds of questions that courts sort out. Goodman isn't in jail. She now has a legal and public platform to defend her actions and position as a journalist. If you're doing journalism that is as aggressive and brave as the article suggests this is then you'd expect to get pushback. Thankfully we have laws, the First Amendment, and public courts so Amy Goodman wasn't just whisked away to serve her time in jail.
KevinEldon··on OpenCAPI Unveiled: AMD, IBM, Google, Xilinx, Micron and Mellanox Join Forces
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise is also a member of this consortium (the source article was updated to reflect this)
KevinEldon··on Leanpub and Pricing
This is a well written explanation of why Leanpub will be charging $99 for new books that use their platform. This charge is in addition to the 10% + $0.50 they keep per sale through their storefront. There are discounts for translations of existing books and successful authors.
KevinEldon··on Show HN: Markcook, a smart and beautiful markdown editor
Can you paste text in Rich Text Format and it automatically converts it? If you answer "yes", I'm definitely downloading this.
KevinEldon··on PacMan that inspires impact entrepreneurship; playing donates to food banks
So this is not a non-profit? Smart. It should allow for more freedom. For instance, I noticed that they sell common business services as well and give a pretty hefty portion of it to non-profits. This seems to be a pretty popular thing, also known as creating a double bottom line. I’d like to see more businesses do things like this. KevinEldon··on US hands internet control to ICANN
That's not how the internet works. Domain names are not the internet.
KevinEldon··on Lost Diamonds: How our current system is failing underprivileged talent
I benifitted from systems hat supported school choice. I hope uS governments (local, state, and federal) support the same. Active and interested parents with active and interested teacher with options to align students with the best educational solutions can only be good for students.
KevinEldon··on Windows Server 2016: End of One Era, Start of Another
Because the rest of your team is more comfortable with Windows and can support and develop for it.
KevinEldon··on Ask HN: When are you considered a “senior” programmer?
The term 'business value' is hard to measure for any given developer I think. The easiest measure is to say your managers define 'business value' and you deliver what they want or deliver to their strategic objectives, but that equates 'business value' to 'management whim'... if the manager is a perfect guide to maximizing profit then I guess that's ok, but I doubt most managers have that perfect ability to detect how to create profits. Alternatively, you might suggest that some cash/profit measure determines 'business value', but that's both hard to measure and not always strategic... some businesses need the best developers to build the systems that lose money in order to make money in other areas.... it's hard to measure.

With the way you've outlined it I think you've emphasized that a 'Senior developer' is someone who can be both social and technical, that's a good thing and would be very beneficial for any person who can do those two things well... but I wouldn't discount people who are exceptionally technical but need someone else to help them prioritize and define their work and focus.

KevinEldon··on HP is buying Samsung’s printer business for $1.05B
I've used by EliteBook 8570w for about 4 years. It's a powerful, rugged laptop with a decent keyboard and good screen. I've upgraded the memory and hard drive over time and don't plan on replacing it any time soon.

My mom just bought a Windows 10 laptop from HP for under $200 including tax; that's an amazing price point... sure there will be bloatware and it's a cheaply made laptop... but for under $200 that's pretty impressive.

KevinEldon··on ITT Technical Institutes Shuts Down
Stop federally funding education. In the US we have 50 different opportunities to learn about how to create the best education system: all of these systems could learn from each other. When we allow federal funding of education we get much less diversity and innovation; we promote a mono-culture.
KevinEldon··on 'I'm a Student-Debt Slave.' How'd We Get Here?
College football is a huge institution and money maker. 100k attendees to college football games in the South Eastern US is a norm. It's like a minor league for the NFL. Most of the schools represented are excellent, but not necessarily academically better for general education or undergrad work.... Although being an alum in the region can be helpful in firming work.
KevinEldon··on Professional Software Development
Gumroad has a feature called PDF stamping [1] that puts the buyer's email address on the PDF. It's not perfect security, anyone who wants to ignore your copy rights probably will, but it might deter unthoughtful sharing.

Also consider a team/company license priced at some multiple (15x?) that will allow a manager or lead to buy your book for their company/team without having to worry about violating copyrights or managing buying the book for every employee.

KevinEldon··on Year-long road trip where it's 70°F every day in North America
Guadalajara has year-round nice weather too I understand (I've visited, but haven't lived there) and has less pollution than Mexico City. The area around lake Chapala is supposed to be very nice if you don't need the trappings of the city.
