KSteffensen··on Perfluorocubane is (as you would expect) weird
I think having as many nitro groups as carbons in there might also be a factor
KSteffensen··on Enhanced Rock Weathering for CO2 Removal [video]
Isn't that basically what Macron tried to do which lead to all the Yellow Vest protests and riots?

I agree in principle but there needs to be some sort of tuning so people living in the poor countryside with no public transportation get time to adjust.

KSteffensen··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
Hard to tell from the marketing, but I'm 90% sure it's some type of fuel cell run in reverse and with a fancy name. Unless they have some new catalyst there is no new tech here.

KSteffensen··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
Rail is quite a lot less flexible than air travel. If you have a plane you can pretty much go anywhere that has a strip of asfalt of the right length. With rail you need to lay out the track between the two points with all the difficulties involved in that.

It's wired vs wireless ethernet. Which do you have in your home?

KSteffensen··on Retirement of Amazon MOBI eBook file format
Coming from a small country, it is amazing to me that an urban area of at least 1 million people is referred to as a village. I consider myself to live in a town and that has only 12000 residents.

KSteffensen··on Jupiter CEO Quits $68B Firm to Sit at the Beach and ‘Do Nothing’
I would rather work as an engineer building stuff than sit on a beach all day.

Also, there's good stress and bad stress. Treating someone with an acute cardiac arrest is probably quite stressful, but also very meaningful. Dealing with your boss having an 'episode' and needs some slide set reworked by 12 o'clock is stressful but also pretty devoid of any larger meaningful purpose.

KSteffensen··on No-one knows what they are doing
In democracies the populations get the politicians they deserve. It's not like it's a surprise to anyone that Boris Johnson's sole political project is Boris Johnson, but people still voted for him.
KSteffensen··on The Magnetar, nature’s ultimate superweapon
Depends on what you like. I remember Consider Phlebas as a series of vignettes, while Player of Games is a coherent story. I like the coherent stories and also think Excession is quite good.
KSteffensen··on Cold Showers
The people above you suck. That's a terrible attitude. Signalling that saving money or just generally improving systems doesn't matter will not build a culture of technical excellence and ambition.

Also, it's not peanuts. How many extra developers are $28400 per month?

KSteffensen··on Scotland starts renewed case for independence
A compromise that Johnson is now unilaterally reneging on. Apparently somebody figured out that it is actually the same compromise that was rejected when presented by Teresa May. No workable solution has been found for Northern Ireland.

At least England/Scotland border doesn't have the bagage of the troubles, but it'll still be a mess.

KSteffensen··on California Drought Update May 2022 [pdf]
The solid legal foundation needs to take physical reality into account. Sure, if previous legal agreements did not account for reality, somebody needs to own up to that, cancel the previous agreements openly while sucking up the relevant penalties. However, if this doesn't happen, physical reality will eventually assert itself over legal agreements.
KSteffensen··on A vision of a multi-threaded Emacs

KSteffensen··on Make formal verification and provably correct software practical and mainstream
Why does it always have to be all or nothing? Is your codebase 100% covered by unit tests?

You don't have to make sure all the angles of your house are perfect right angles, but there's probably a couple that really have to be. Formally verify those and live with manageable imperfection for the rest.

KSteffensen··on Day trader army loses all the money it made in meme-stock era
The purpose of the stimulus check was for Donald Trump to put his name on a check to a bunch of voters.

The extent to which it happened to help out people in need or "the economy" was secondary.

KSteffensen··on MIT researchers develop a paper thin loudspeaker
I imagine a static, non-flexible screen that you're not supposed to put any pressure on is a very different problem from a flexible, constantly moving glove which is also used to push buttons, grab stuff, etc.

KSteffensen··on Tell HN: Turned 44 today and I'm lost

It is definitely possible to be a wise, insightful, compassionate and moral human being without religion.

KSteffensen··on Russian forces invade Ukraine after Putin orders attack
Ukraine was already 'poisoned' for NATO, due to the Crimea annexation and the Donetsk and Lugansk separatists. No need for an invasion to poison anything further.

My view is that this is about maintaining a fading colonial empire. Ukraine has been drifting away from Russian influence at least since 2014 and since Russia does not have the economy to re-assert its influence through trade it has to do so by military means.

I have no facts to base it on other than news propaganda, but I think they are too late to re-capture Ukraine and this rather desperate move will only bolster the Ukrainian nationalism. The Russian forces also will not be able to hold the Ukraine well enough to extract any sort of economic benefit from it. 45 million is a lot of people.

KSteffensen··on “The president of MIT told me that tenure was not about research or merit.”
My impression is that those are the same thing.
KSteffensen··on If Looks Could Kill
> Well maybe the engineers should know how to sell the thing they're making?

I agree, why not have an technical guy there who knows how to operate the thing and can support the sales guy? If the company is sending only sales guys with no in-depth technical knowledge to a trade show, it's fully understandable and well-deserved if this sort of thing happens.

> why should he know every last intricacy of the machine?

If I am buying an expensive piece of hardware you better believe I will ask questions about the intricacies and if I don't get answers I will not be buying.

KSteffensen··on If Looks Could Kill
As pointed out elsewhere maybe the sales guy should know how to operate the thing he is selling?

Also, it sounds like a power cycle cleared up the issue so no big problems.

KSteffensen··on Lufthansa confirmed that 18k flights had been flown empty to keep slots
I'm sure this could be worked out using some combination of paying for the slot and requiring a minimum amount of passengers/cargo. Exact numbers would require some tuning by people who know about this but doesn't seem impossible to get right. E.g. have airlines pay a fee for any empty seat below an 80% full plane.

Having planes fly empty to maintain a monopoly is just bad all around

KSteffensen··on Omicron at 100% Prevalence, Colorado
I've seen this argument elsewhere and I don't get it. From my understanding the limitation on exponential growth, the flattening of the top part of the S-curve, comes from total population. There is no one left to infect, basically.

If the rising part of the S-curve is steep, that means people get infected within a shorter timespan and a corresponding higher load on hospital beds and healthcare personnel, which is what we are trying to avoid with the lockdowns.

What am I missing?

Also, calling exponential growth a 'conspiracy theory' seems unnecessary

KSteffensen··on The UX on this small child is terrible
For all of its UX problems, I must say I am very impressed with Small Childs battery life. The low power shutdown does tend to be very noisy though.
