Jayschwa··on Making our new homepage fast and performant
I don't understand the fad in making content flop around the page as one scrolls. At the very least, it would be courteous of them to respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query.

Jayschwa··on IPFS Support in Brave
Ha, very cool. The HTTPS version does not load for me right now, but the IPFS version does (somewhat slowly). Supporting all the hot protocols could be a good subject for a blog post or guide.
Jayschwa··on Signal AppImage for Linux
Thank you for maintaining the snap. I once reported a problem with it a couple years ago and was impressed at how quickly you responded and fixed it.
Jayschwa··on Simple Bank Is Closing
This is disappointing news. Their app is pretty nice and they made shared banking with my wife easy. I also have a backup Chase account. I just fired up their mobile app for the first time in awhile. It's a slow and cluttered mess. Hopefully a spiritual successor to Simple will emerge.
Jayschwa··on Software development: should we stop? Maybe we should
Heh, I somewhat felt this way yesterday. Two co-workers and I (all programmers) spent half an hour trying to get a video chat to work. By the end, I think we all felt a little embarrassed by our profession. (To be fair, Zoom works pretty well most days. Yesterday just had gremlins I guess.)
Jayschwa··on CISA: The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history
Thank you for pointing out errors in this data. Out of an abundance of caution, I have removed the link from my original post.
Jayschwa··on CISA: The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history
Edit: I have removed the link because someone else found errors in it.

Original: AP claims there's no evidence of "dead voters", but this list seems to indicate otherwise: [redacted] It's obituaries matched with returned absentee ballots. I've inspected a dozen or so entries and it seems legit.

Jayschwa··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
I've seen this explanation, but it's gaslighting. It says:

> No ballot for the 118-year-old Mr. Bradley was ever requested, received or counted.

Yet, the voter registration site clearly showed that a ballot was requested, sent to, and received from the elder Mr. Bradley. I'm skeptical that they would have detected the error had this particular case not gone viral. If they had the means to detect the error, then why didn't they do it before sending the ballot? Or, even better, remove the defunct registration in the first place?

Jayschwa··on Biden wins White House, vowing new direction for divided U.S.
The oldest known American was born in 1905. This list seems hit-or-miss, but I spot checked a few entries with birth years before that (excluding Jan 1900 since that might be used as NULL) and it showed them as having voted via absentee ballot. I don't know if the number is large enough to make any meaningful difference, but it's not a good look.

Jayschwa··on Assorted Thoughts on Zig and Rust
> I wish someone would make a language that was both as good as Zig or Rust, and could be compiled to C code.

Zig will eventually have this feature. It is a work-in-progress: https://github.com/ziglang/zig/blob/master/src/codegen/c.zig

Jayschwa··on Dick Costolo: Some Business Leaders Should Face a Firing Squad
> he's not suggesting that they should be shot

Right, he's only proclaiming that he'd be happy if they were shot...

Jayschwa··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
I migrated from Gmail to Fastmail a couple years ago and I have been happy with it. Migrating existing emails from Gmail into Fastmail was easy, as was setting up forwarding from Gmail to Fastmail for all future emails. The hardest part was just updating accounts across the web to use the new email. Since I'm using a custom domain with Fastmail, I can change account emails to things like foo.com@mydomain.com or bar.net@mydomain.com.
Jayschwa··on Airbnb Swings to a Loss as Costs Climb Ahead of IPO
Maybe the section was called something else, but the publicly available info on the listing certainly didn't ask me to lie to neighbors, authorities, etc. Whatever section it was could only be seen after booking. It's true I should have inspected those details more closely after the initial booking, but it was something that AirBnB shouldn't have been facilitating in the first place. Shortly after I complained, the listing was deleted and recreated, and later deleted again (whether on the host's part or AirBnBs, I do not know)
Jayschwa··on Airbnb Swings to a Loss as Costs Climb Ahead of IPO
Ditto. I cancelled a reservation because the "house rules" (which you can only see after reserving) were super shady and basically stopped short of admitting to being an illegal rental. I cancelled the reservation weeks before the stay, but because it was after the initial 48 hours of booking, I got screwed out of half the cost. Their support didn't give a damn either, despite me having used the site many times over the past half decade with no problems. They lost their way and I hope they crash and burn.
Jayschwa··on Proton 5.0, a package to run Windows games on Linux
Thank you for providing this service. I started using Linux on my gaming machine about a year ago and ProtonDB has been very helpful.

Jayschwa··on Async-std: an async port of the Rust standard library
As an aside, Zig[0] recently merged a change to try and tackle the use case of [a]sync-agnostic functions: https://github.com/ziglang/zig/issues/1778. The "What Color is Your Function" blog post appears to have been one of the inspirations behind the change. Some of Andy's (the language creator) recent videos go over it in detail: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUICU6mgcyGy61pojwuWyHA

Jayschwa··on What Is Zig's Comptime?
There is a proposal for adding type constraints to generic functions. That doesn't mean it will necessarily be added, but it's something the community is thinking about.

Jayschwa··on How Id built Wolfenstein 3D using Commander Keen tech
The original publisher, Softdisk sold many of its assets to Flat Rock Software in the 2000s. Flat Rock sold off bits and pieces over the years, and the Catacomb games were one of the last things it held [1]. In 2017, I wrote a toy implementation of Catacomb 3D in WebGL [2]. Since the project used art that was under copyright, I contacted Richard at Flat Rock to ask permission to use it. That conversation eventually led to me deciding to buy the overall game ownership from him [3].

Jayschwa··on How Id built Wolfenstein 3D using Commander Keen tech
Hovertank and Catacomb, the games between Keen and Wolfenstein, are both open-sourced:

https://github.com/FlatRockSoft/Hovertank3D

https://github.com/CatacombGames/Catacomb3D

I'm the current owner of the Catacomb games, and have been working on improving and porting them in my spare time (not publicly available yet, but will be When It's Done). Fabien's Game Engine Black Book has been an invaluable resource for me. I highly recommend it!

Jayschwa··on Solo – Open-source FIDO2 security key
I accidentally bricked one when I walked across a carpeted room and zapped it with a static charge.
Jayschwa··on Free SSL on Github Pages with a custom domain: Part 2 – Let's Encrypt
I'm having problems with it too. I plugged in the new IP addresses for my root A records yesterday, and then deleted and re-added the CNAME file in the repository. GitHub support said they manually started the certificate provisioning process several hours ago, but I'm still getting certificate errors.
Jayschwa··on A flight was late because someone named their Wi-Fi hotspot ‘Galaxy Note 7’
Devices are supposed to be shut off / put in airplane mode to prevent interference with avionics. Intentionally jamming a part of the spectrum would be counter-productive.
Jayschwa··on Many LASIK patients may wind up with glare, halos or other visual symptoms
You could wear glasses that don't refract? I have some friends who do that, and I've considered the same.
Jayschwa··on Many LASIK patients may wind up with glare, halos or other visual symptoms
I wonder how this compares to similar, but different procedures. I had PRK done 7 years ago, and it was probably the best $4000 I ever spent. It went perfect for me - no new issues. However, I did it one eye at a time, just in case!

PRK differs from LASIK in how the top layer of the cornea is removed. In LASIK, a flap is cut and peeled back, then put back in place at the end of the procedure. In PRK, the top layer is scraped off and has to grow back in, a process that takes several weeks and can be somewhat painful.

Ditto. Using Chrome beta.
Jayschwa··on US Cellular Now a Part of Project Fi's Network
I was using Google Voice for a few years. When I got Project Fi, I had to release my old number and get a new one. It was disappointing, but less annoying than I thought it would be (since I don't use my phone much).
