Infernal··on Tailscale Kubernetes Operator
I am not sure but maybe referring to this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tailored_Access_Operations
Infernal··on Everyday uses for PVC water pipe
Oh shit - we did not know. I guess we got lucky too!
Infernal··on Hypervisor from Scratch (2022)
Ohhh. I thought the parent said “for Linux” but I see now it was “on Linux”.
Infernal··on Hypervisor from Scratch (2022)
Maybe a joke but just in case, https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
Infernal··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
> Use authenticated protocols, not SMS/MMS. It's insane that anyone can just send data to your phone unprompted. I'd probably disable cell service altogether unless I'm actively making an outbound call to a known contact

I was just listening to Darknet Diaries episode 100 this past weekend and they mentioned an NSO-crafted zero-click vulnerability in Whatsapp that Citizen Lab had detected being exploited.

Though I suppose Whatsapp (anyone with my phone number can message me) wouldn’t qualify as an authenticated protocol.

Infernal··on I rode with an ice road trucker to the Arctic Circle
The more difficult question is who gets to decide.
Infernal··on Wavy walls use fewer bricks than a straight wall (2020)
I grew up around these fences and never heard them called anything but a split-rail fence. Seems apt.
Infernal··on Show HN: My Pen Plotting Journey
No true draftsman
Infernal··on The FCC responds to my ATSC 3 encryption complaint – they want to hear from you
Thanks for this, I’d never considered this approach.
Infernal··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
Links? I’d love to read more.
Infernal··on The FCC responds to my ATSC 3 encryption complaint – they want to hear from you
And of course we peasants aren’t allowed to encrypt our signals.
Infernal··on QubesOS – A reasonably secure operating system
It is explicitly not a server OS, it really only makes sense as a graphical workstation OS.
Infernal··on Linux Lite: Easy to Use Free Linux Operating System
So you use ElemantaryOS with the KDE Plasma desktop? Or Plasma on a different distro now?
Infernal··on Train an AI model once and deploy on any cloud
I should’ve been clearer about what I was getting at. I agree AKS, EKS, GKE etc (cloud gnostic k8s) are different enough to cause a growth of complexity when managing a mixed environment of them.

The post I was replying to seemed to be saying (by analogy) “Linux is hard to manage because I run into all sorts of trouble trying to support a mixed environment of SuSE, Ubuntu and RHEL, therefore Linux is just too complicated”.

Infernal··on Train an AI model once and deploy on any cloud
> I work at a place running a million containers deployed in all 3 (Azure, AWS, GCP)

Are you using AKS, EKS, GKE on those providers, or deploying your own k8s on top of the compute those providers offer? It sounds to me like the former.

Infernal··on ProtonMail Rewrites Your Emails
I’ve always wondered about tampering of digital evidence like that, how much it might happen and not be detected, and what the penalty would be if it were.
Infernal··on Static electricity attracts ticks to hosts
There’s also a tool called a tick twister that is supposed to get them around the neck and twist them out. Like flat tweezers that you slide along your skin so you don’t accidentally squeeze the body. If I understand correctly they have flexible spines/barbs on their head which is what can keep the head in if you pull without twisting. When you twist the spines lay down and so the tick slips right out intact. That’s the marketing behind the tool anyway.
Infernal··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Interesting. The only button I have in a 1:1 GChat is a video camera with a plus in the middle, and it simply creates a google meet link which I then send to the other person, and then we both join that link and are talking. The MS Teams functionality was more like a call - I hit the button, and I am in a video chat, and the phone is ringing on the other person's end. Maybe it's just my org's config but I don't have an equivalent function in GChat.
Infernal··on Rock and Roll Drums: All You Need to Know
Or playing any instrument in a band that also has a drummer. I’ve never played drums but I have set up/packed up/wrangled many dozens (hundreds?) of drum kits
Infernal··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Lol, so this is the reason I could “call” someone on MS Teams, but in my new org on google chat when I choose to “meet” with someone it just pops a link into their DMs. Bizarre.
Infernal··on Statement on AI Risk
“Humans are going to be outcompeted by AI” is the concrete bit as best I can tell.

Historically humans are not outcompeted by new tools, but humans using old tools are outcompeted by humans using new tools. It’s not “all humans vs the new tool”, as the tool has no agency.

If you meant “humans using old tools get outcompeted by humans using AI”, then I agree but I don’t see it any differently than previous efficiency improvements with new tooling.

If you meant ”all humans get outcompeted by AI”, then I think you have a lot of work to do to demonstrate how AI is going to replace humans in “every important job”, and not simply replace some of the tools in the humans’ toolbox.

Infernal··on The brand new Thunderbird logo
I think GP means the new Thunderbird logo looks way too similar to the Firefox dev logo.
Infernal··on Breakthrough deal to prevent Colorado River from drying up
>eat one less steak or skip a handful of almonds

At least in the case of Arizonan desert alfalfa, this is a result of sweetheart lease deals offered to Saudis with no limits on groundwater access, who are effectively exporting Arizona’s aquifers in the form of livestock feed.

Infernal··on The last days of a 350-year-old family farm
The author states that a nearby historical building was on what used to be Willard land. It’s likely that what remains is a very small fragment of the original whole.
Infernal··on Casio adds fitness features to original G-Shock digital watch
I'm not a big G-Shock person but a quick google led me here [0]. Sounds like it does what you want?

>GPS and a digital compass combine to guide you to your destinations, while the watch tracks your routes and stores waypoint information in memory, making this the perfect tool for survival activities.

Curious if that does the trick. I've occasionally considered a g-shock watch here or there but I always get lost in the hundreds of possible configs, and can't quite figure out what the master list of options I can choose from is.

Infernal··on Intel to drop the “I” moniker in upcoming CPU rebrand
It sounds like the real issue here with Intel is they got it backwards. Nvidia leads with the generation (2xxx, 3xxx) and then differentiates within the generation (xx60, xx80). Intel leads with the intra-gen differentiation (i5, i7 etc.) which is most often included in marketing, with the generation buried in the particular CPU model number that often isn't included (10xxx, 11xxx).

It doesn't help that there's also a random mix of river codenames and I can never keep straight which number they belong to.

Infernal··on Children aged 2-6 successfully trained to acquire absolute pitch (2012)
I'm really curious about the circumstances of a loud engine for 9+ hours. Were you involved in auto racing or something?
Infernal··on Internet in a Box
Are you comfortable sharing the current version of your draft?
Infernal··on When Interfaces Kill: What Happened to John Denver (1999)
Well the comment about it "burning a lot of oil" could also be attributed to splashing some oil in the air intake. And it might eventually leak somewhere hot enough to burn.

I agree odds are intake means... oil orifice in this case. But I figure we're already in car abuse land might as well see how deep the rabbit intake goes.

Infernal··on When Interfaces Kill: What Happened to John Denver (1999)
When you say he dumped the oil into the intake... are you using the word intake to mean the place in the valve cover where the oil is supposed to go?

To me, when you say intake, I immediately am thinking of the air intake.
