Ice_cream_suit··on A quantum walk down Wall Street
Renaissance Technologies is rumoured to use methods from topological quantum field theory.

They are fiercely and aggressively secretive, so no one really know for sure.

However, their founder worked in that field before moving to business: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chern%E2%80%93Simons_theory

Famously, he was sacked by the NSA for giving an interview opposing US involvement in the Vietnam war.

Ice_cream_suit··on Texas schools are being told to teach ‘opposing views’ of the Holocaust. Why?
Education by legislation has now reached the apogee of insanity.

"If teachers are obliged to tell their classes that there is “another point of view” about whether the Holocaust occurred, must American history lessons now also include books asserting that the United States was never a slave-holding nation or that racism ended with the Emancipation Proclamation?

If the discussion surrounding a novel or story leads a class to conclude that LGBTQ+ people are entitled to basic human rights, must the class be asked to seriously consider the opposing view: that those rights should be denied to anyone who differs from the heterosexual norm?"

Ice_cream_suit··on Three Body Problem: Solution
"We present a statistical approximate solution of the bound, non-hierarchical three-body problem, and extend it to a general analysis of encounters between hard binary systems and single stars.

Any such encounter terminates when one of the three stars is ejected to infinity, leaving behind a remnant binary; the problem of binary-single star-scattering consists of finding the probability distribution of the orbital parameters of the remnant binary, as a function of the total energy and the total angular momentum.

Here, we model the encounter as a series of close, non-hierarchical, triple approaches, interspersed with hierarchical phases, in which the system consists of an inner binary and a star that orbits it -- this turns the evolution of the entire encounter to a random walk between consecutive hierarchical phases.

We use the solution of the bound, non-hierarchical three-body problem to find the walker's transition probabilities, which we generalise to situations in which tidal interactions are important. Besides tides, any dissipative process may be incorporated into the random walk model, as it is completely general.

Our approximate solution can reproduce the results of the extensive body of past numerical simulations, and can account for different environments and different dissipative effects. Therefore, this model can effectively replace the need for direct few-body integrations for the study of binary-single encounters in any environment. Furthermore, it allows for a simply inclusion of dissipative forces typically not accounted for in full N-body integration schemes."

Ice_cream_suit··on JPMorgan's Dimon blasts Bitcoin as 'worthless', due for regulation
Bitcoin is important to a global industry worth around 2.8 trillion USD.

"A comparatively simple crime-economic model, constructed from readily available international databases, closely predicts a range of such expert assessments, and appears to offer a framework for determining and monitoring the size of money laundering flows around the world. Further research is required to complete the model, but the nature of that research is made clear, and it appears that existing data sources are likely to be adequate.

Initial output from the model suggests a global money laundering total of $2.85 trillion per year, heavily concentrated in Europe and North America."

Ice_cream_suit··on New edition of Norvig's Artificial Intelligence book
"New to this edition:

This edition reflects the changes in AI since the last edition in 2010:

• We focus more on machine learning rather than hand-crafted knowledge engineering, due to the increased availability of data, computing resources, and new algorithms.

• Deep learning, probabilistic programming, and multiagent systems receive expanded coverage, each with their own chapter.

• The coverage of natural language understanding, robotics, and computer vision has been revised to reflect the impact of deep learning.

• The robotics chapter now includes robots that interact with humans and the application of reinforcement learning to robotics.

• Previously we defined the goal of AI as creating systems that try to maximize expected utility, where the specific utility information—the objective—is supplied by the human designers of the system. Now we no longer assume that the objective is fixed and known by the AI system; instead, the system may be uncertain about the true objectives of the humans on whose behalf it operates. It must learn what to maximize and must function appropriately even while uncertain about the objective.

• We increase coverage of the impact of AI on society, including the vital issues of ethics, fairness, trust, and safety.

• We have moved the exercises from the end of each chapter to an online site. This allows us to continuously add to, update, and improve the exercises, to meet the needs of instructors and to reflect advances in the field and in AI-related software tools.

• Overall, about 25% of the material in the book is brand new. The remaining 75% has been largely rewritten to present a more unified picture of the field. 22% of the citations in this edition are to works published after 2010."

Ice_cream_suit··on Anyone Seen Tether’s Billions?
LOL !

"The chief financial officer is Giancarlo Devasini, a former plastic surgeon from Italy who was once described on Tether’s website as the founder of a successful electronics business.

The only reference to him that turned up in a search of Italian newspapers showed he was once fined for selling counterfeit Microsoft software.

Elsewhere on the website, there’s a letter from an accounting firm stating that Tether has the reserves to back its coins, along with a pie chart showing that about $30 billion of its dollar holdings are invested in commercial paper—short-term loans to corporations. That would make Tether the seventh-largest holder of such debt, right up there with Charles Schwab and Vanguard Group.

To fact-check this claim, a few colleagues and I canvassed Wall Street traders to see if any had seen Tether buying anything. No one had. “It’s a small market with a lot of people who know each other,” said Deborah Cunningham, chief investment officer of global money markets at Federated Hermes, an asset management company in Pittsburgh. “If there were a new entrant, it would be usually very obvious.”"

"Cancer Biotherapy and Radiopharmaceuticals officially retracts the paper entitled, “LncRNA SNHG16 Promotes Proliferation, Migration, and Invasion of Glioma Cells Through Regulating the miR-490/PCBP2 Axis,” by Fangen Kong, Yang Yan, Jinfeng Deng, Yaoli Zhu, Yingqin Li, Huiqing Li, and Yiping Wang (Cancer Biother Radiopharm. E-pub ahead of print 23 Jul 2020; doi: 10.1089/cbr.2019.3535) at the authors' request:

“We apologized that we have found a serious problem in our paper. In fact, the Western blot experiment in our study was commissioned a third-party company for testing. In present, some peers have found that the company has forged experimental reports. After contacting the company, they were unable to provide the original images. We have checked and confirmed that the authenticity of the data provided by the company is problematic. In view of the problems in this paper, all the authors have discussed and agreed to withdraw the paper.”

The journal publisher requested the name of the “third-party company,” to which the authors replied:

“We apologize for our mistakes. Our so-called "the third party company", after further investigation, is actually not a company but an individual person. Due to the personal reasons, the previous experimental data were lost and the original raw data could not be provided. So we can not guarantee the authenticity of those data provided by that person. Some members are considering to repeat the experiment again, but we have no way to raise enough fund to repeat it. Hence after serious discussion, we decided to withdraw the manuscript.

Again we apologize sincerely for your inconvenience."

Ice_cream_suit··on What John von Neumann Did at Los Alamos
"Born in Kiev in the old Russian Empire, into "an old Ukrainian Cossack family which was part of the intellectual elite in pre-revolutionary Russia", Kistiakowsky fled his homeland during the Russian Civil War.

He made his way to Germany, where he earned his PhD in physical chemistry under the supervision of Max Bodenstein at the University of Berlin.

He emigrated to the United States in 1926, where he joined the faculty of Harvard University in 1930, and became a citizen in 1933.

During World War II, Kistiakowsky was the head of the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC) section responsible for the development of explosives, and the technical director of the Explosives Research Laboratory (ERL), where he oversaw the development of new explosives, including RDX and HMX.

He was involved in research into the hydrodynamic theory of explosions, and the development of shaped charges. In October 1943, he was brought into the Manhattan Project as a consultant.

He was soon placed in charge of X Division, which was responsible for the development of the explosive lenses necessary for an implosion-type nuclear weapon. In July 1945, he watched the first atomic explosion in the Trinity test. A few weeks later, another implosion-type weapon (Fat Man) was dropped on Nagasaki. From 1962 to 1965, Kistiakowsky chaired the National Academy of Sciences's Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP), and was its vice president from 1965 to 1973.

He severed his connections with the government in protest against the war in Vietnam, and became active in an antiwar organization, the Council for a Livable World, becoming its chairman in 1977."

Ice_cream_suit··on Facebook is other people
Neat reference to Sartre.

"The line “Hell is other people” in French reads “L'enfer, c'est les autres” or “Hell is [the] others.”

(The best known English translation of the play, by Paul Bowles, actually renders the line “Hell is just – other people.”)

We get a little more of the flavor of the line in English if we read it as “Hell is the Other"

Ice_cream_suit··on Remote Tasmanian GP clinic closes because staff refuse to get the jab
The Tasmanian ABC says that the doctors and some nonmedical staff have refused to be vaccinated.

I find it very disquieting that doctors would refuse to be vaccinated, thus placing vulnerable and immunosuppressed patients at risk.

Ice_cream_suit··on Effect size is significantly more important than statistical significance
The better medical journals do stress the hazard ration efficacy and the confidence interval.

See the extract below from the NEJM: Seasonal Malaria Vaccination with or without Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention

"The hazard ratio for the protective efficacy of RTS,S/AS01E as compared with chemoprevention was 0.92 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.84 to 1.01), which excluded the prespecified noninferiority margin of 1.20.

The protective efficacy of the combination as compared with chemoprevention alone was 62.8% (95% CI, 58.4 to 66.8) against clinical malaria, 70.5% (95% CI, 41.9 to 85.0) against hospital admission with severe malaria according to the World Health Organization definition, and 72.9% (95% CI, 2.9 to 92.4) against death from malaria.

The protective efficacy of the combination as compared with the vaccine alone against these outcomes was 59.6% (95% CI, 54.7 to 64.0), 70.6% (95% CI, 42.3 to 85.0), and 75.3% (95% CI, 12.5 to 93.0), respectively."

Ice_cream_suit··on Kerala: One of the few places where a communist can still dream
"But in Kerala — far from the high-stakes maneuvers of the Cold War and nearly 2,000 miles from the Indian capital of New Delhi — history has taken the most unexpected of detours.

Instead of ossifying into an autocratic force, Kerala’s communists embraced electoral politics and since 1957 have been routinely voted into power.

Instead of being associated with repression or failure, the party of Marx is widely associated with huge investments in education that have produced a 95 percent literacy rate, the highest in India, and a health-care system where citizens earning only a few dollars a day still qualify for free heart surgery.

This modern incarnation of communism also has produced one of the stranger paradoxes of the global economy: millions of healthy, educated workers setting off to the supercharged, capitalist economies of the Persian Gulf dreaming of riches and increasingly finding them."

Ice_cream_suit··on Warren Buffett Calls It Right on EV Batteries
"At its 2020 annual results, the company said it would stop plans for nickel-cobalt-manganese battery adoption, which most car and battery makers are set on. Instead, BYD has turned all its attention to so-called lithium iron phosphate, or LFPs, for its so-called Blade battery, which was released early last year.

Wang’s focus on LFPs is turning out to be a game-changer. It’s cheaper and more readily usable. The chemistry is far more stable than the up-and-coming NCM type that promises to take cars hundreds of kilometers further but isn’t as safe. Meanwhile, the flat Blade battery takes up less space and reduces the weight of the car, another problem automakers have had to contend with. BYD has managed to bring costs down by almost 30% and reduce the number of parts while also boosting efficiency

The value of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s holdings in BYD Co. Ltd., one of China’s oldest makers of cars and automotive batteries, has skyrocketed this year: BYD’s share price is up almost 30%.

Buffett has backed BYD for over a decade, holding around 22% in the Hong Kong-listed company, which now sits on a market capitalization of over HK$915.6 billion ($117.6 billion). That’s more than investor darling Nio Inc., the new-generation Chinese automaker listed in New York."

Ice_cream_suit··on Jewish Problems (2011)
"The Triguboffs were refused visas for Canada and the United States, which had strict quotas on Jewish immigrants. But they had obtained landing permits for Australia back in 1946 when the country had an open-door policy to Jewish refugees.

By early 1948, however, Australian policy had changed and a family of rich Jews ... were not the migrants Australia was looking for.

In postwar Australia, Jews were tarred with a mix of old-fashioned anti-Semitism and suspicion they were either communists or Zionists attacking British forces in Palestine. Things came to a crisis in January 1947 when an old ferry called the Hwa Lien docked in Sydney carrying 300 stateless Jews from Shanghai. Sydney's The Sun newspaper claimed that criminal syndicates run by communists had backed the Jewish immigrants and hinted that Jewish refugees had collaborated with the Japanese. The Sun editorialised: "The danger of infiltration by professional trouble makers, whether Jewish terrorists or Communist agents, will arouse the natural suspicion of all who wish to see Australia kept Australian."

Arthur Calwell, Australia's immigration minister following World War II, was a champion of mass migration (although famously within the confines of the White Australia Policy) and had initially been sympathetic to the plight of Jewish refugees. He let the Hwa Lien unload its passengers. But in the heated aftermath he quietly imposed a secret quota on the number of Jews who would be given entry on any future migrant ships."

Ice_cream_suit··on Jewish Problems (2011)
Australia had a notorious "dictation test" that was used to weed out non-white immigrants.

"Under the Immgration Act, migrants who entered Australia between 1901 and 1958 could be asked to take a dictation test.

To pass the test, they needed to write 50 words in any European language, as dictated by an immigration officer. After 1905, the officer could choose any language at all. A Chinese immigrant, for example, could be asked to write out 50 words in French, Italian or another language.

Few migrants could pass the test in these circumstances. This meant that it was easy to fail an applicant if they were from an ‘undesirable’ country, had a criminal record, had medical issues or were thought to be ‘morally unfit’.

If an applicant failed the test, they could be deported by the Australian Government."

Ice_cream_suit··on Swiss Ph.D student’s dismissal spotlights China’s influence
