Abstract Deep-learning models have become pervasive tools in science and engineering. However, their energy requirements now increasingly limit their scalability1. Deep-learning accelerators2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 aim to perform deep learning energy-efficiently, usually targeting the inference phase and often by exploiting physical substrates beyond conventional electronics.

Approaches so far10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22 have been unable to apply the backpropagation algorithm to train unconventional novel hardware in situ. The advantages of backpropagation have made it the de facto training method for large-scale neural networks, so this deficiency constitutes a major impediment.

Here we introduce a hybrid in situ–in silico algorithm, called physics-aware training, that applies backpropagation to train controllable physical systems. Just as deep learning realizes computations with deep neural networks made from layers of mathematical functions, our approach allows us to train deep physical neural networks made from layers of controllable physical systems, even when the physical layers lack any mathematical isomorphism to conventional artificial neural network layers.

To demonstrate the universality of our approach, we train diverse physical neural networks based on optics, mechanics and electronics to experimentally perform audio and image classification tasks. Physics-aware training combines the scalability of backpropagation with the automatic mitigation of imperfections and noise achievable with in situ algorithms.

Physical neural networks have the potential to perform machine learning faster and more energy-efficiently than conventional electronic processors and, more broadly, can endow physical systems with automatically designed physical functionalities, for example, for robotics23,24,25,26, materials27,28,29 and smart sensors30,31,32.

Thus, alcohol increases the risk for hypertensive heart disease, cardiomyopathy, atrial fibrillation and flutter, and strokes. In moderate drinkers, the risk of stroke is 1.14 times greater (95% CI, 1.10-1.17); coronary disease (excluding myocardial infarction) is 1.06 (95% CI, 1.00 – 1.11); heart failure is 1.09 (95% CI, 1.03- 1.15); fatal hypertensive disease 1.24 (95% CI, 1.15-1.33) and fatal aortic aneurysm is 1.15 times greater (95% CI, 1.03-1.28)(20) than for non-drinkers. It has been argued that people with moderate consumption and no binge episodes may appear to have a slightly lower risk of ischaemic heart disease (IHD), but the protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption for IHD has been challenged as the evidence is based entirely upon non-randomized studies(22)"

An increase in high-density lipo-protein (HDL) cholesterol has been the most compelling potential source of biologic plausibility for how alcohol might help prevent CVD. However, the cardioprotective effect of HDL is under challenge: many studies find no effect from increased HDL levels on reducing the risk for myocardial infarction(23)(24)(25). Other proposed cardioprotective biological mechanisms have also been shown to be inconsistent with sound epidemiologic studies. These include coronary calcification and carotid intima-media thickness, where alcohol consumption is associated with worse vascular health(26)(27). Contrary to popular opinion, alcohol is not good for the heart. This directly contradicts the common message over the past three decades from some researchers, the alcohol industry, and the media that alcohol prolongs life, chiefly by reducing the risk of CVD. For example, the use of red wine has been promoted through various diets as a “heart-healthy” beverage for the longest time. The presence of resveratrol in wine has been known for its cardioprotective characteristics in light to moderate drinkers. However, there are multiple reasons that the belief that alcohol is good for cardiovascular health is no longer acceptable:

• Such evidence has been based on observational studies • No randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have confirmed health benefits of alcohol • The presence of unaccounted confounding factors further weakens the quality of evidence • Studies misclassify unhealthy ex-drinkers as abstainers • Most evidence is observed only in the Caucasian population • Studies that show positive effects are funded by the alcohol industry.* Research in the latest decade has led to major reversals in the perception of alcohol in relation to health in general and CVD in particular. These developments have prompted health authorities in a number of countries, e.g. the Netherlands(28), England(29) and Australia(30), to lower their recommended amount of alcohol for low-risk drinking. The alcohol industry has also perpetuated misleading information about the benefits of drinking alcohol. This interference by the alcohol industry closely reflects the universally vilified activities of tobacco companies. Alcohol industries deceptively promote their products under the labels of “healthy” and “safe”. Portrayal of alcohol in print and electronic media as necessary for a vibrant social life has diverted attention from the harms of alcohol use. Youth-targeted advertisement and encouraging alcohol as “heart-healthy” have created a conducive environment for young adults to relate alcohol with ‘having a good time’. Contrary to this belief, evidence from all around the world exists to link alcohol with a range of noncommunicable and infectious diseases."

There are already excellent TeX modes available for Emacs without using a standalone application.

Despite being a Emacs and TeX user, I must admit that I have no clear idea of what this strangely named thing is.

And since it sounds like it implements parts of both, probably poorly if the bizarre naming is any indication of other development decisions, I have no inclination to explore it.

The US is around 4% of the world's population.

If I had to choose, I would prioritise the welfare of Chinese people, who are 18% of the world or the welfare of Africans, who are 17% of the world or the welfare of Indians, who are 20% of the world.

Our loyalty should be to humans, not to the delusional political configuration of the moment.

Otherwise we might as well go back to loyalty to traditional ancient Greek city-states.

I read the abstract, in reverse order. Discussion and Results first.

If it seems plausible ( much research is trash, churned out to pad a CV ) and interesting, then I scan the Methods section.

This heuristic helps classify 95% as utter trash or outside my current area of interest in less than 10 seconds.

If it seems seriously interesting, I then read the full text the same way ie: backwards.

At no point do I want pretty visualisations made by wannbe PhD candidates, full of misinterpretations, wishful thinking or outright fraud.

Our internal investigation concluded that this article has clear evidence of image theft, image manipulation and plagiarism.

First, figure 3 Panel A is similar to figure 1 in the article “Pulmonary Infection Caused by Achromobacter xylosoxidans in a Patient with Carcinoma of Epiglottis: A Rare Case” [2].

It appears that a portion of Figure 1 in the above-mentioned article was copied, and manipulated.

Secondly, figure 3 Panel B is similar to Figure 4 in the article “Nosocomial Achromobacter xylosoxidans Infection Presenting as a Cavitary Lung Lesion in a Lung Cancer Patient” [3].

The image was reused after a slight color modification.

Our investigation additionally uncovered other expression of concerns of image manipulation and theft in articles published by author ... [4,5].

The authors could not provide a reasonable explanation for our findings and do not agree with the retraction.

The PAMJ regrets that these grave violations were not identified before publication and sincerely apologizes to the scientific community."
