ISL··on The first commercial carbon-sucking facility in the US opens in California
The last one, not burning it in the first place, is the thermodynamically-easiest thing to do.

However, there's already a lot of CO2 in the air, and we'll be wise to pull that out, too, so the impacts of warming are blunted.

Part of the way people will begin to vote for carbon-usage restrictions is when they begin to discover exactly how expensive it will be to remove from the air. The big catalyst, of course, is when they begin to personally feel acute effects of climate-change.

This [1] was my catalytic moment. Everyone's will be different, but we're each going to have one or more experiences that change our view on fossil fuels.

ISL··on It's still easy for anyone to become you at Experian
A statutory fine of $50k per compromised account would get the attention of the credit bureaus. (It might drive them out of business, but it sure would get their attention.)
ISL··on Sony announces a9 III: first full-frame global shutter camera
The faster available shutter speeds will compensate for the faster base ISO except where the superior dynamic range of a lower ISO is needed or when a longer shutter speed is simultaneously desired.
ISL··on Android 14's user-profile data bug
Google offers to back up Authenticator, should you choose to do so.
ISL··on Why every microwave sucks these days
We are considering purchasing a new microwave, so I dipped my toes into the review-water earlier this week. The Wirecutter folks have done an interesting job of disassembling the microwaves from many brands and visually demonstrating that they're all made by one manufacturer. Unsurprisingly, when they test them, they all perform the same, too:

With eInk, an advertiser can also change the ads based upon who is walking/driving down the street.
ISL··on Toyota adopts the North American charging standard
Once the majority of the population runs mostly on renewable energy, they're going to vote to tax fossil fuels into oblivion.
ISL··on Observation of the effect of gravity on the motion of antimatter
The experiment is very cool and it is satisfying to see a clear demonstration of the effect.

Experimentally, however, the effect itself, that antimatter falls, has been demonstrated at much higher precision by weak equivalence principle tests for decades.

See, for example, this 1991 paper from Adelberger et al. https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.66...

I have worked closely with the authors of that paper. I think the reasoning in that and subsequent papers is correct.

ISL··on CFPB kicks off rulemaking to remove medical bills from credit reports
Probably charging everyone more to accommodate the potential lost revenue.
ISL··on A simple web server written in Awk
My first interesting question was, "How do I open a port in awk?!"
ISL··on My favourite API is a zipfile on the European Central Bank's website
There's a chance this HN post is going to more than halve my awk-usage....
ISL··on Diamonds are losing their allure
They got liquidity. Sometimes that has a lot of value.
ISL··on Rare oxygen isotope detected
Proton decay is predicted by many models -- it's the reason the first huge water-Cherenkov detectors were built. The surprising thing is that, for some reason, they've never been observed to decay.
ISL··on Fifth Circuit: Law enforcement doesn’t need warrants to search phones at border
The word 'border' appears nowhere in the text of the amendment.
ISL··on Divide your life into semesters, even when you’re not in school
The prime factors of 366 are 2, 3, and 61. You'll need them, too :).
ISL··on Fifth Circuit: Law enforcement doesn’t need warrants to search phones at border
'The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.'

ISL··on Fanatics Is Building a Weird Monopoly over Sports Trading Cards
A sports Wiki with Creative Commons PDFs of cards could offer a free alternative to the traditional cards industry.

I'm sure that there are printing firms out there who might be interested in printing small runs of CC cards to see if they can make a consistent margin above their costs.

ISL··on Graceful behavior at capacity
Strategies like these (and kernel schedulers) are often as applicable in life as they are in computer science.

Good luck with the RCE. It definitely can get better, but it takes time, and, as you say, that tiny tube of ointment.
ISL··on Deutschlandticket: Germany’s €49 ticket pushes passenger numbers up 25%
Especially if that service reached PAE, SEA, PDX airports. There's a ton of SEA->PDX flights.

https://www.portseattle.org/sea-tac/flight-status?flight_dat...

shows 23 unique aircraft flying SEA->PDX today and 32 unique aircraft flying PDX->SEA

At ~$80/seat one-way and ~80 passengers/flight, that's >$100M/yr in revenue.

Existing trains take 3.5 hr for the journey. Existing flights take 1 hr for the flight + time spent in security, so trains aren't that far off.

Furthermore, there are ~30,000 cars traveling each way each day along I-5 between Seattle and Portland (https://www.chehalisbasinstrategy.com/wp-content/uploads/201...) .

Speedy train service really would make a difference.

ISL··on Some remarks on possible superconductivity of composition Pb9CuP6O25
The entire modern era depends on large single crystals, especially, but not limited to, silicon.

For non-silicon applications, take a glance at some of Cree's products, for example.

ISL··on The Mathematica Journal is no longer accepting submissions
Prestigious journals, assuming reasonable editors, can spontaneously emerge and attract submissions. Authors publish in journals based upon some combination of 1) editorial quality, 2) whether or not everyone else in their field publishes in it, and 3) prestige.

2 and 3 are self-reinforcing effects -- why does Nature attract prestigious papers? Because it publishes prestigious papers. Why does Nature attract high-quality research? Because it is full of high-quality research.

All of this is to say that it is likely that, given a distribution of reasonably-edited arXiv-overlay journals, there's a pretty good chance that just a few of them in any given field (or at large) will attract most of the serious work

ISL··on The Mathematica Journal is no longer accepting submissions
ArXiv has deliberately left the implementation of such systems to others. There's nothing stopping anyone from making such an overlay, should they choose to do so (and many have tried).
ISL··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
If reproduced, it could be the 2023 Nobel (see the high Tc prize. Announced in March, awarded in October).

Verification can be very easy for this particular phenomenon.
