Hupriene··on A proof-of-concept system for counter-surveillance against spy drones
All that would do is increase the number of intervals that would need to be observed. Adding noise to a channel only reduces the bandwidth of the channel.
Hupriene··on Damned with Praise: The Meaning of Kendrick Lamar
Just to clarify and provide some supporting documentation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Foundation#Financing

Mozilla makes money by providing users to companies that make money from ads.

Hupriene··on Dice Become Ordered When Stirred, Not Shaken
That's what I was thinking. Vibratory sorting/feeding machines are common and a lot of engineering effort has gone into optimizing them. I'd be very surprised if rotary oscillation had not been tried, and probably used, on many occasions.
Hupriene··on The languages which almost became css
Any language where you don't have to memorize a precedence and associativity table just to read the code gets +1 in my book.
Hupriene··on Judge Tells Uber Lawyer: ‘It Looks Like You Covered This Up’
If Uber is found to have stolen trade secrets, how large is the judgment against them likely to be? Is it based on some multiple of the cost of the research that produced those secrets? Or the market value of those secrets?
Hupriene··on The Joy of Erlang; Or, How to Ride a Toruk (2011)
As a former lisper, I was secretly hoping that everyone would tell me that LFE is a fantastic and totally viable language.
Hupriene··on The Joy of Erlang; Or, How to Ride a Toruk (2011)
A question for any Erlang devs out there. For Erlang neophytes, what are the arguments for learning vanilla Erlang over one of the other ErlangVM languages?

Hupriene··on Amazon Key is a new service that lets couriers unlock your front door
Amazon wouldn't have a possessory interest in your apartment, so they couldn't consent to a search.

Amazon could certainly be coerced into unlocking the door, but the FBI could also just use their boots to coerce the door into unlocking on its own.

Hupriene··on Handmade Hero – A complete game live-coded from scratch
I think the amount effort put into this goes way beyond gimmick. I only followed the first few episodes, but it was clear that he was very engaged with his audience, and that he put a great deal of emphasis on the educational value of the project.
Hupriene··on Clojure/Conj 2017 – Opening Keynote by Rich Hickey [video]
It's less about being smart and more about having habits that fill in the gaps that a lack of static analysis leaves. This can happen through TDD or through REPL driven development. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

Hupriene··on John Carmack's Keynote at Oculus 4 Live Stream [video]
The resolution you would have to use to do this without excessive head movement would probably be more appropriate for mobile UI than desktop UI. I don't think the current gen headsets can provide a satisfactory Excel experience for example. Also, the relatively small 'sweet spot' that current gen headsets provide make extended reading uncomfortable since it requires head movement for what would usually be accomplished by eye movement.
Hupriene··on Say no to Electron: use JavaFX to write a fast, responsive desktop app
Generally java desktop software is wrapped together with a bundled jre and behaves like an executable without external dependencies. There are a bunch of ways to do this. For example: https://github.com/libgdx/packr
Hupriene··on California bans drones from delivering marijuana
This is probably motivated in part by a desire to prevent legal in-state distribution from being easily parleyed into illegal interstate distribution. They want to be able to keep track of all the vehicles distributing mj. This is easier if they can only drive on roads and are required to have gps.

Since federal regulation of mj is built on the interstate commerce clause, actual interstate commerce is a likely trigger of conflict between the federal government and the California mj industry

Hupriene··on CEO says iRobot will never sell your data
There doesn't have to be any bylaw changes, there just needs to be a contract with the customer regarding the usage of their data. One of the old fashioned kinds of contracts that doesn't allow one party to make unilateral changes to it. Then if they eventually do sell the data, they invite a class action lawsuit for breach of contract.
Hupriene··on Is it time to break up Google?
> We need look no further than the conduct of the largest banks in the 2008 financial crisis or the role that Facebook and Google play in the “fake news” business to know that Brandeis was right.

I couldn't really get any farther into the article than this.

How exactly is "fake news" supposed to be a symptom of abuse of monopoly power?

Are we supposed to believe that Facebook and Google's smaller competitors rigorously curate content to ensure factual accuracy?

Hupriene··on Lychee identified as cause for mystery deadly childhood illness in India

It was illegal to import canned ackee to the US for years, due to risk of hypoglycin poisoning.

Hupriene··on I returned my 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar
For me when I hit number keys, I don't hit them with the tips of my fingers, instead I hit them with the pad, which naturally leads to some finger sticking out past the numbers. 3 and 4 are especially problematic since I hit them almost with the first knuckle of my middle finger).
Hupriene··on Famed poker pro with ‘remarkable’ $9.6M scheme has to pay it back
Do you really think that a losing gambler would be able to bring a suit against a casino because a dealer placed cards in a slightly uneven way that seemed suggestive to the gambler and caused him to make sub-optimal bets? Even if it could be shown that the dealer had studied the psychology of cards for that very purpose?
Hupriene··on Dark Patterns – User Interfaces Designed to Trick People [video]
It's not directly shaming, but it presents the user with three options.

1. Comply with whatever they want you to do

2. Lie (say that you are going to comply later without intending to)

3. Walk away from the product (perhaps forever).

Hupriene··on Supreme Court rules for Samsung in smartphone fight with Apple
It may make a difference in damages. From what I can see nothing in this decision says that the lower court must change its damage calculations. This only says that they have the option to.
Hupriene··on Supreme Court rules for Samsung in smartphone fight with Apple
The actual opinion is quite short. https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/15-777_7lho.pdf

It basically states that if a single component of a multi-component device infringes a patent, then calculations of damages based on profit can (but aren't required to) consider only the profit made on that component. While the ruling is in Samsung's favor, it seems unlikely to make much of a difference in the disposition of the case.

Hupriene··on The Soil Depletion Crisis: A tragic episode from the 19th century
I'd guess you'd get a boost in efficiency if brine mining were to be combined with desalinization, which also looks to be ramping up in the near future.
Hupriene··on Team wants to sell lab grown meat in five years (2015)
I think you are off by quite a bit on how much meat Americans eat.

214.8 lbs per capita per annum * 318 million people = ~68 billion lbs per annum

Hupriene··on California has legalized recreational marijuana
That was exactly the question addressed in Gonzales v. Raich. From Scalia's concurring opinion:

Unlike the power to regulate activities that have a substantial effect on interstate commerce, the power to enact laws enabling effective regulation of interstate commerce can only be exercised in conjunction with congressional regulation of an interstate market, and it extends only to those measures necessary to make the interstate regulation effective. As Lopez itself states, and the Court affirms today, Congress may regulate noneconomic intrastate activities only where the failure to do so "could… undercut" its regulation of interstate commerce.... This is not a power that threatens to obliterate the line between "what is truly national and what is truly local."

Hupriene··on U.S. Accuses Tech Firm of Bias Against Asian Software Engineers
I wonder if this isn't some long lingering reverberation of the interment of Japanese Americans during WWII. Is this the influence of the institutional memory of the US government security community?

Alternatively, this could be the natural result of defensive measures against a concerted effort on the part of e.g. the Chinese government to place people inside of an organization that deals with a lot of secure data.

It's probably reasonable to assume the worst (naked racism), but you never know.

Hupriene··on SVG has more potential

Hupriene··on Mastercard sued for $19B in Britain's biggest damages claim
I'm not a huge fan of credit card companies, but trying to do business in an environment where you are potentially subject to ex post facto laws at any moment sounds like a nightmare.

I guess the only way to protect yourself would be to try to curry influence so that the tides of politics don't run against you.

Hupriene··on DDoS protection
Unless there is a contractual guarantee somewhere, that's not something I like to bet my company on.
