Hates_··on It's death
Raising a child is noteworthy. Same for the millions of people who do it now, and the millions of people who did it before them. Just because millions of people do it doesn't diminish the significance of it. Framing it as such, is like saying there's no point running a race if you don't come first. A personal victory is still a victory. If it matters to you, then that's all that matters. All of those things like authoring papers, winning great prizes, setting records, will all be eventually be lost to time.
Hates_··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the major London cycle lanes that goes from Tower Bridge to Greenwich gives priority to cyclists crossing side roads https://maps.app.goo.gl/b3SweRqzvNehTcE38

Hates_··on You are what you read, even if you don't always remember it
The way I've heard it phrased is "Non-fiction teaches us about the world, fiction teaches us about ourselves."
Hates_··on Write for others but mostly for yourself (2022)

Shamelessly stolen from justinlloyd on a previous post about writing to think.
Hates_··on Show HN: A simple ChatGPT prompt builder
This will be fun to play around with. Thank you!
Hates_··on Show HN: A simple ChatGPT prompt builder
I'm very interested to know more about what "editing prompts" is! And where to find/use it?
Hates_··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
It's one thing to be curious as to why they couldn't have housed their mother, but it's possible to ask with empathy and compassion rather than assumptions and judgment.
Hates_··on Google will retire Gmail’s Basic HTML view in January 2024
One use case is the web view allows you to check emails of a workspace that requires a Google Device policy to be installed to use the native apps. Of course, the simple solution is to be given a workplace phone or don't check emails when away from a computer.
Hates_··on Security audit of account and payment services
Yes, they are. They are also listed on their "Partner and Reseller" page: https://mullvad.net/en/help/partnerships-and-resellers/
Hates_··on Ask HN: How do you work on your mental health?
I'm interested to know a bit more about your self-debriefs. What is the format? Are you reflecting back on specific events, or is this a daily practice?
Hates_··on Mozilla bundles its VPN and email relay services for $7 per month
What is the best way to support Mozilla/Firefox? I'm happy to sign up for this if it is the best way to contribute to the longevity of the product I use more than anything else.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
That's a useful framework. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
100% agree. I know I can't absorb this all now, but I can take what looks important and digest and integrate it over time.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
Thank you for sharing. I love that way of thinking about the bigger picture.
Hates_··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
Thank you for your list! Would you be able to share what "T.R.A.F" is as I was unable to find out more by Googling it.
Hates_··on Twitter Layoff Started Today
WSJ has a piece on it. A third of the talent team, which affects fewer than 100. https://www.wsj.com/articles/twitter-lays-off-third-of-talen...
Hates_··on Even your boss wants to quit
That's not the impression I have from the article. The overwhelming % of execs are pushing for positive change. At the end of the day, it's the "put your own mask on first" principle. Execs are humans just like everyone else, with their own job pressures and stresses, not robots that can automatically compartmentalise and supress their own feelings and emotions.
Hates_··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
What do you use for keeping files synced between different machines like Dropbox/OneDrive/GDrive does?
Hates_··on Personal Knowledge Management Is Bullshit
Obsidian being _just_ a UI on top of Markdown files is one of it's selling points.
Hates_··on The off-screen workers who keep the adult webcam industry running
You seem to be forgetting the porn industry if filled with women from Western countries. Not to mention the large number of US, Canadian, British and Australisn creators on OnlyFans.
Hates_··on Google Docs New Feature: Pageless
Not from what I can see. Seems only features that are reliant on there being a "page":

Some features are not available on pageless docs: columns, page numbers, headers and footers, page breaks, etc

Hates_··on Ask HN: What are some technically inspiring movies, TV shows or documentaries?
Moneyball - Taking a data driven approach to a problem and trusting in the process.
Hates_··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
Perhaps https://workflowy.com or https://dynalist.io ?
Hates_··on Active noise cancellation is not for me
The Airpod Pros and Airpod Max Pros definitely changed my sentitment towards active noise cancellation. Transparency is great when I want more awareness of my surroundings without having to take out my earphones. The Maxs also don't seem to have any of ear pressure that had led me to sell my Bose QC35s a couple of weeks after buying them.
Hates_··on Peloton cuts back on Apple Watch support
My Peloton is one of the best fitness purchases I've made in years. And thats after a couple of years on a Wahoo Kickr Snap and a year on a Wahoo Kickr Core, mostly using Zwift with a bit of TrainerRoad mixed in. The classes on Peloton are just so much fun, motivating and uplifting.
Hates_··on Decoding the Peloton
Genuinely curious as to what would have to be different for it _not_ to be considered a fad? Seeing as they have been going for 8 years and, and, after having a quick look, have been doubling revenue for a number of years previous to Covid19.
Hates_··on M1 Macs cannot support dual Extended displays through their Thunderbolt 3 ports
Rectangle is an alternative that's actively supported: https://github.com/rxhanson/Rectangle
Hates_··on To listen well, get curious
Unless I'm misunderstanding, with this advice you run the risk of shutting down some converstaions which may be important to one person, but not particularly to the other.

We should probably distinguish conversations that are about just something in general, and examples in the post, which are about potentially crucial/difficult challenges a person is having.

I may not be particularly interested in a problematic situation that someone may be having at work, but I know that by listening and showing genuine curiosity, I may be able to help them in their own understandin and reaching a potential positive outcome.

Hates_··on Parallel Tracks
I can only speak for myself, but the meetings that previously seemed mysterious when I was an IC, are those around organisational objectives, resourcing, budgets, supplier management, alignment with other departments (Product, DCO, Infosec, Legal), catchups with my direct reports, technology department objectives etc.
