Gualdrapo··on How our vibe coded website looks like a designer made it
> Most times I'll grab ideas from multiple places, combine them, and endlessly iterate on them until I get to something I'm happy with.

The "designer" happens to not to be human. At that point it just sounds like going to a website template store and scrolling endlessly through options until you find a template you'd say "meh, this will do".

Gualdrapo··on Walking Men
It's kinda odd (to me, at least) to see an active blogpost in 2026. Everyone here seems to miss pre-html5 and css3 web but nobody seems to miss this era of the web, circa 2007-2010
Gualdrapo··on 10 Tells of a Slop UI
> It adds these // whenever anything close to tech is mentioned.

Shoot. I use those in my portfolio and didn't know they were using them everywhere.

Gualdrapo··on Improving site performance by shipping more CSS
Once (like a year ago or so) stumbled upon some person's post asking for someone to help them to "fix" some section at their website. It was done !important over !important over !important over !important. Said person was really convinced all it needed was another bunch of !important because apparently that was what ai spit for them, at least at that time
Gualdrapo··on The Test
Read somewhere something going like "ai is just as smart as the person using it"
Gualdrapo··on Making a movie in pure SVG using SMIL
I wish the likes of Inkscape had a SMIL feature (or if I had a magic want I'd revive KDE's Karbon to be able to do this). Doing SMIL animations "by hand" is rather tricky and as far as I know there's no comprehensive tool to do this - i.e. something that fully covers both SVG and SMIL.
Gualdrapo··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
> The Telegram client leads in every aspect by far. It's just easy to use.

I really like Telegram, it's the closest thing to what I wish IM should be, but still it's so far from it and to be honest its apps suck now trying to shove the "premium" features down your throat. I prefer using TelegramX (or Forkgram to still be able to see statuses)

Gualdrapo··on Mind-altering drugs played key role in rise of Andean civilization
What do you mean "was"?
Gualdrapo··on Show HN: Hacker News, without AI
First one atm is about HuggingFace.
Gualdrapo··on Details.so
I feel like this kind of websites that showcase "minimal" and "elegant" websites are just places where websites that want to be so trendy they all look kinda the same are being gathered. I'd bet more than half the websites shown here were made from a Framer template.

Take for example deadsimplesites.com, "The most minimal sites on the web, curated in one place" - most of them are nearly identical and, if you take a closer look, most of them are kinda the same framer template just filled with different data. And oh surprise, all of those "most minimal sites on the web" happen to be personal websites for product designers...

Gualdrapo··on Show HN: Art – draw one stroke, let symmetry complete it
fwiw Krita has a similar setting in its brush tool - you draw a stroke and said brush stroke is mirrored by a given x axis or a given y axis (or both)
Gualdrapo··on All grown-ups were once children, but only few of them remember it
Yup, quite an odd choice to set the typeface for big blocks of text to a display typeface as CM Sans
Gualdrapo··on The Kuycon P20 – 28" 4500x3000px 3:2 monitor
My graphic designing ass feels like this is about the perfect ratio for a screen. And this thing seems quite sturdy.

But even if I had the budget to afford it most probably I'd pass - having to handle settings with a remote control instead of with the OS via a ddc interface or something seems quite odd, or maybe it's just me that grew so used to this "old" Apple Thunderbold Display.

Also that it doesn't have internal speakers, mic or webcam - I really like the thunderbolt display "peripherals" and make my desktop way less cluttered that it should be with just any other monitor, so the hypothetical case of having to get also speakers, mic and a webcam sounds like a serious downgrade. Can't care less about the 120Hz thing but maybe it's because I've never used a high-rate display.

I wish they do a "P20 Pro" of sorts that adds this things.

Gualdrapo··on Automattic's board forces CEO Matt Mullenweg into leave of absence
Huh. I still remember back in the Gutenberg launch era and all the drama around it (2018) the internet saying he was the devil for profiting from WP.
Gualdrapo··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
Unemployed.
Gualdrapo··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
I could buy a tv in late 2014 and happened to be the last batch of bravia tvs pre android tv. Back then I was kind of bummed out that just a few weeks after that they announced the first tvs with android tv and now i was hooked with a smart-but-not-that-smart tv with a bunch of crappy ads, an unusable web browser and a non-customizable os.

But they stopped updating it years ago, none of its apps work anymore and the only "smart" feature that still works is screen mirroring feature. The tv part itself still works great. Not a 4k oled 120Hz shiny impressive thing but the image quality is still great. What I thought was an unlucky adquisition back then turned out to be a pretty good one.

Gualdrapo··on Show HN: Open-Source eInk Bike Computer
In my humble experience the gold standard for bike computer screens was the Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2. It had like 64 colors or so but you could see it everywhere.

That being said, seeing that there are now eink displays capable of 60Hz, I wish they (and projects like this one) could take over in this specific market.

Gualdrapo··on The asteroid currently hitting front end web development
FrontPage, Dreamweaber and co seemed to fell into obscurity when HTML5 & CSS3 came up and from that point web development went much more complicated than that.

Granted, it seems it is easier now to give prompts to an LLM so it will spit things out than back then where you had to know the tool and fiddle with menus and thingies to sort of try to produce a result.

But the drawback seems to be the same for both - lots of unreliable and unoptimized code that will go live if you don't know what they're doing under the hood and can potentially cause issues in the future. Remember that all this tools do are sorts of interpolation. I've seen lately lots of "modern" websites with tons layers of !important in their CSS and who knows the monstrosities that they have with their JS.

Meanwhile I and all people like me still don't have a job because all of this and the alleged "thousands" I was getting for doing this things.

Gualdrapo··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
In my experience hydraulic disc brakes require less maintenance than rim brakes.

Living on a hill (like I had to go up a ~150m 23% wall to get home, and go braking down it to go places) meant I had to spend frequently on rim brake shoes and, eventually, rims. The frequent rain and mud makes it to the rim brake shoes and diminish braking power if you don't keep them clean.

That doesn't happen with hydraulics - clean them with alcohol, bleed them once each year and you're set. I agree, they're the greatest thing ever.

Gualdrapo··on Omarchy: 1Password and 37signals become Distinguished Corporate Patrons
Yet here they don't spend that much time talking about the other gazillion distros out there this days...
Gualdrapo··on Early 2000s were peak of humanity
I've known about people born in late 2007 and 2008 "missing" the Windows Aero & Mac Aqua aesthetic and even going to the point of saying that everything was cook back then when they were really young or weren't born yet. Kinda odd but I'd like to know if some other people thought that way about the age they were born
Gualdrapo··on CobaltC – The Successor to C?

Gualdrapo··on 1kB Website as Status Symbol
It seems writing without being assisted by ai is the actual new status symbol
Gualdrapo··on Tether: iMessage, SMS, etc. on Linux
One of the not cool things about KDE Connect is that its "plugins" system doesn't seem like it.

Where are more plugins for it? How you add them? Where are docs for creating them?

I haven't had a great feeling when asking its dev about stuff but hope that situation has changed. Having a proper plugin system would let people like OP extend KDEConnect and potentially benefit more people, instead of being subjected to the will of its devs and the roadmap.

Gualdrapo··on How I Design with AI
This kinda sounds like so-called "design thinking" but with ai and extra steps
Gualdrapo··on “It works better in the app”
I sell stuff ocassionaly on a "local" platform called MercadoLibre (like, I could afford a new handlebar for my bicycle so I could sell there the old one). Mercadolibre kind of wants to be the argentinian Amazon, even lobbying in the argentinian government so they will ban similar platforms from other countries. With time, MercadoLibre has become incredibly hostile and greedy for us small sellers, while favoring corpos.

They charge you 25% for each sale you do via their platform, but the latest thing they did was to force you to "identify" you are you via a website where they track your face features and scan your ID "because of security". Yeah, that sounds good, so I did that in 2021.

They asked this again last year because of reasons. But this time they won't let you use a regular web browser: they forced you to do this via their app. No matter how much you try, it will always fail citing "compatibility issues" or "errors". I tried to complain but their customer support is incredibly shitty, if you even manage how to find to contact them.

But oh surprise, their "app" is just a web wrapper.

Gualdrapo··on Nebula Sans
The differences are really, really subtle, I'd bet most people (including me) would have a really hard time telling them apart.

I agree with that one person (I can't recall when or where I read this) who said modern typography is getting so frivolous about doing personalised typographic families for startups instead of extending the existing ones to cover more languages and scripts than latin.

But as they say here, "por la plata baila el perro" (something like "a dog would dance for money")

Gualdrapo··on Meta reaches $17B settlement over social media harms to children
A few days ago I learned guerrilla dissent groups here in Colombia were using Facebook and Tiktok to target children towards joining them. $16.68B is too little for them.
Gualdrapo··on Nobody Wants Artisanal Code Anymore
AI slop aside, lately I've been thinking about that term, it seems to fit what I do - artisanal coding. Just saw a comment here saying that it never mattered but at least for frontend it happens there are cases you can still be able to tell where it was made by an LLM agent or it was made by a human.

Take for example this thing I found on HN the other day:

https://uiverse.io/GreyD097/great-rat-93

There are lots of magic numbers in the CSS, extra and redundant elements in the HTML that shouldn't be needed if the author was aware of radial gradients, and unoptimized and redundant SVG elements that very well could have been CSS shapes or a single SVG symbol that can be easily cloned and rotated.

I just wish there are still people (and employers!) that actually care for this kind of stuff.
