Glide··on .name Termination
Looking at the threads below, very few people are discussing technical things in dns terms like zone or nameserver.

Yeah. The way how most things on the internet prove ownership make the assumption that the 3ld is owned by the 2ld. Extend it once out for country specific ones and you cover most cases that people have to work with.

Then when you consider DNS is fundamental infrastructure and people build secure things on top of it, (ahem DNS challenges for certs), it's remarkable that anyone would want or desire edge cases.

Bernie’s Sanders is very easy to attack because of how fast he folded to the DNC in the past decade.

Even for the Trump "bull in the china shop" voter, Sanders has become less relevant in 2020 and 2024 because he offers so little and for someone so called principled, he doesn’t hold the same ideas on immigration that he has before.

I just _refreshed_ my setup replacing my shield and trying to get Emby and Kodi working together…

This looks great especially since I have complete collections of various sci if stuff I loved growing up (Star Trek: TNG, Star Gate). The big thing for me is how this supports sitting on the couch and looking for something to watch.

Glide··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
It's a positive vision of where society can go rather than having to sacrifice and buckle down.

Do people not remember riding bikes as kids? Riding a bike is _still_ fun. It never stopped being fun. Now you can do that and get to work.

Glide··on 280M e-bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
Completely agree and it's worse with electric unicycles.

I would honestly look for Belt Drive versions of most of these recommendations as there is one less maintenance thing to worry about.
Glide··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
I agree with all of your points. I am kind of shocked that I had to scroll so far down to see point #3 on this thread at all.

CSS doesn't give the best toolset in order to do styling and organize styling. The locality of HTML structure and styling makes things far easier to work with.

I would also throw in that front end coding feels far more fickle and arbitrary. Tailwind allows me to define a set of rules and then apply them directly. It ends up being more maintainable when used in conjunction with component abstractions.

Glide··on Why Tailwind CSS Won
You can use normal CSS and use @apply if that was necessary.
Glide··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
It's probably the most dystopian and I'm very glad I didn't have to scroll to the bottom before someone said otherwise.

The logical end of this thinking is that people who would otherwise be perfectly capable of raising children would put them up for adoption because they would want the best outcome for their kids.

It's like Black Mirror episodes write themselves.

Glide··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
Is there something more inherent that makes an electric unicycles more dangerous, other than they make them go ridiculous speeds?

I would have thought the larger wheel on an EUC made it more stable and the higher power makes it not have to nosedive. I kind of prefer e-bikes because they are well… normal.

Glide··on CPSC calls for full recall of all Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards
Didn’t you basically train yourself on how to run out on an EUC while learning? I know I did.

Also the EUC feels so ridiculous that wearing protective gear seems normal.

God… the most close calls I’ve seen have always been with rental e-scooters. Both of them blew past a red light, which btw, I was stopped at on my e-scooter. He nearly got hit by a SUV if the driver didn’t stop.

I think there’s some expectation for bikes to go with traffic, rental scooter riders think they’re some kind of unicorn where right of way no longer applies.

And I am assuming they are rental scooters because of the styling and lack of helmet.

Glide··on How the US can stop wasting billions of dollars on each transit project
The DC metro is ridiculous. I'm cynical enough to think that the only way the Silver Line would have been done faster would have been to shutdown DCA so politicians would be forced to use Dulles. Even then they would probably just have drivers.

IIRC, there are issues with the concrete used on the new platforms too.

Also looking up the definition of abortion in this case is important:

https://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/data_stats/abortion.h...

For the purpose of surveillance, a legal induced abortion is defined as an intervention performed by a licensed clinician (e.g., a physician, nurse-midwife, nurse practitioner, physician assistant) within the limits of state regulations, that is intended to terminate a suspected or known ongoing intrauterine pregnancy and that does not result in a live birth. Most states and reporting areas that collect abortion data report if an abortion was medical or surgical. Medical abortions are legal procedures that use medications instead of surgery.

Glide··on Is the DTS vs. Dolby war effectively over?
For the stuff that matters, I had to connect to my receiver then to the TV. It doesn’t help that DTS isn’t supported by my TV (LG-CX). I have a Denon AVR as well.

So basically, almost everything goes through the receiver: nvidia shield, Blu-ray player. But then again, I paid through the nose for it.

It makes more sense to me that the sound capable device is better at figuring out the audio stuff. Which means the ports to a sound bar/receiver is a real consideration.

Haven’t figured out PC audio to my receiver though. I’ve basically given up.

Glide··on Covid-19: Runny nose, headache, and fatigue are commonest symptoms of omicron
There are a lot of things involved in increasing hospital capacity. One would be increasing the number of workers.

With things like masks we were able to free up supply by allowing N95 construction masks to be used until other production can get up to speed. We don't exactly have a hidden cache of nurses and doctors that can be rallied upon a moment's notice.

Now getting rid of the ones that can, and probably contracted COVID already does make zero sense.

Glide··on Covid-19: Runny nose, headache, and fatigue are commonest symptoms of omicron
Depending on where you're from the answer differs greatly. But a very simple (and most likely a wrong one) is that no matter the circumstances, it takes a preponderance of bad outcomes to shift quickly on policies.

And the policymakers for the most part, have not shifted in the past several years. In the USA, Biden has pretty much carried forward the policy from Trump and Dr. Fauci is still the director of the CDC during this time. If national policy and sentiment were to change the biggest sentiment would be to change the CDC director.

The election was just last year. Now, regardless of the reason why individuals voted for them, politicians feel as if their winning means to move forward on all parts of their agenda. One of the biggest reasons for Trump's loss is how COVID was handled. So the direction that this administration has is to handle COVID differently than Trump, which means, do more to combat COVID.

In the USA, I would not expect anything major to come out at the national level with regards to COVID. VA just had a shift happen with the governor's race (I live in VA) and VA might be a barometer for what changes can happen at a local level.

And sadly, I do think I have to tie my expectations more with politics than science or data.

Glide··on LAPD ended predictive policing but a new effort shares many of their flaws
Because people in those neighborhoods realize that crime going unchecked with exacerbate the poverty cycle.

A lot of people break down the problems into a series of axioms or beliefs instead of systems of inputs and outputs. So while policing isn’t enough to solve the underlying problem, removing policing makes the underlying problems worse.

It’s actually not that surprising. We went from questioning whether or not the president would follow the constitution or the Pope in JFK, to Biden who is refused communion due to his stance on abortion.
