FigBug··on Making a virtual machine in Google Sheets
I thought HRM had a very odd skill curve, started out very easy and then got difficult quickly. I think overall it's too hard for somebody who isn't a programmer, and there aren't enough hard problems for a programmer. And once the problems got hard, it seemed more like work and less like fun. And a lot of it seemed like busy work since there were so few instructions.
FigBug··on What Challenges and Trade-Offs Do Optimising Compilers Face?
This is true for any ISO standardized language: C, C++, ECMAScript/Javascript, COBOL, Ada, Forth, Fortran, Pascal, Ruby, SQL and more. C# dropped their ISO standard after 2.0
FigBug··on Voc: a physical model of the vocal tract, written in ANSI C
What do you mean oldish version? Looks like it's from 2017 , or from an old version of pink trombone. Do you have the latest code in source control anywhere online?

Milkdrop, by the same author has been open sourced.
FigBug··on Electric Cars Soon Will Cost Less Than Gas Cars, Research Suggests
Where are they getting that the battery costs 50% of the vehicle? I'm seeing batteries cost about $220/kwh, which is about $6000 for a Nissan Leaf.
FigBug··on How I realised “Free Software” is a better term than “Open Source”
Not really. According to the GNU FAQ if you only use GPL software and don't distribute it then there are no conditions that apply.

FigBug··on Dropbox Reaches Key Profit Milestone
There are two reasons I won't use GDrive anymore.

- If it starts up and your GDrive folder is empty, it deletes everything from the online version.

- There is no history like Dropbox, so once you fuck up and delete everything there is no easy way to get it back.

FigBug··on Musical User Interfaces
JUCE has always been music focused. Originally it was created at the same time as the DAW Tracktion. It was split out of Tracktion and become its own product and Tracktion was sold to Mackie. Roli ended up purchasing JUCE and Tracktion was spun off into its own company.

Source: Tracktion developer since 2005.

FigBug··on Embedding the Python Interpreter in a Qt Application
I looked at doing this several years ago on Windows and I seem to recall that Python had a lot of global state. So you could only have one instance of the Python VM and therefore only Python script running at once. Is this still the case?

In the end, for me, it was easier to share file formats between the C++ and Python and run the Python scripts out of process.

FigBug··on How CS50 at Harvard uses GitHub to teach computer science
When I was in University I had never even heard of Git or Subversion, but that was because the didn't exist.
FigBug··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks
> Ever tried packaging a QT application for Mac, Windows and Linux?

How long ago? I've never done Linux, but Mac it comes with a script that does everything and spits out a .dmg. On Windows it spits out everything into a folder you can zip up or create an installer.

FigBug··on Inside RadioShack's Slow-Motion Collapse (2015)
Why not use DigiKey? They'll arrive the next day and be really cheap.
FigBug··on Night Shift Mode in macOS Sierra 10.12.4
If you want you house lights to do the same thing, get some Philips Hue bulbs and this app I wrote: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/circadian-hue-for-philips-hu...

My old office didn't get much external light, so I wrote this app to give me a sense of time of day. Now I have a better office I still use it.

FigBug··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
No, but a quick Google turned up two in the Bay area: http://www.spinnaker-sailing.com/timeshare-sailing https://sailtime.com/san-francisco-bay/
FigBug··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
I've owned several boats and I'm done with that. I now belong to a coop where I pay $650 a year and have access to a 30' Catalina and 24' C&C that I can use almost as much as I want.

There is no such thing as a cheap boat. The maintaince is a constant time and money suck.

FigBug··on Ask HN: If you were to switch career, what would you do?
I'd buy a sailboat and take people on tours in Greece. Except I hate people, which is why I work in tech.
FigBug··on Microsoft Office 365 beats out Google’s G Suite in S&P 1500
I gave up on G Suite after the second time somebody blew away all our documents by moving their Google drive folder. You think they could put a safety check in there when G Drive starts up and the folder is empty, "Do you want to delete everything? or do you want to download again?" And there doesn't seem to be a good way to backup Google Documents since they aren't actually documents but just a link to the document.
FigBug··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
That's a good story, I didn't get much feedback from users at the time. Nice to hear to what people were doing. And yes, my megahal got 'trained' as well.
FigBug··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
I'm out of the loop. Not even sure what the differences are. But as long as people are still interested in developing it and using it, I think that's good. Hopefully the fork will rejoin sometime in the future.
FigBug··on ICQ: 20 Years Is No Limit
Around 2000 I got annoyed with the ads and crap in ICQ, so I wrote Miranda ICQ, now called Miranda IM (http://www.miranda-im.org/) based on libicq. One of my main inspirations to write the app was I wanted to connect a chatbot to ICQ to harass my friends, but the standard API wouldn't allow sending messages. So I added a plugin API, connected the MegaHAL chatbot and good times ensued.

I lost interest in Miranda shortly after that, but I'm always impressed that a group has kept it going.

FigBug··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?

FigBug··on Show HN: Jumper, a robot to help you exercise every day
Yes, one of my co-workers had a spin desk. He said you couldn't really ride with a heart rate above 100 bpm and still concentrate. He was doing a huge amount of very low intensity riding, it didn't have much benefit, but hugely increased appetite.
FigBug··on Show HN: Jumper, a robot to help you exercise every day
I've just recently gotten into http://zwift.com/, it's the only thing I've found that makes riding indoors tollerable, almost fun. The power meter on the bike connects to zwift, the more power you put out, the faster you go. There are a few virtual locations you can ride around, ride with other people. There are also workouts, where you need to hold a certain power for certain time. The workouts are scaled based on the power you can do. I prefer working out with power than heart rate since it responds a lot faster and is less affected by other things going on in your life. Mind you, a bike, a trainer and a power meter is pretty expensive if you don't already have them.
FigBug··on iPhone Nonsensus: Apple's Debt to Bloggers
1999 seems to be the first year CIPA tracked digital camera sales. Also, I hadn t realized how completely digital camera sales have collapsed.

Can you explain this?

FigBug··on Joe Sutter, who guided creation of the Boeing 747, has died
I never understood why Boeing risked it all on the 747. The Boeing 2707 was supposed to be the future of passenger travel and the 747 was supposed to get relegated to freight. Why risk it all for what was expected to be a stop gap product?

For the first wide body, why not start with something 767 sized? Why start with the biggest?

FigBug··on Joe Sutter, who guided creation of the Boeing 747, has died
The 747-8 got a new wing, making it 16% more fuel efficient.
FigBug··on Ask HN: What's the best library for making cross-platform UIs?
JUCE doesn't try and look native, it has it's own look and feel. Qt does on Windows and OSX. It really depends what you are trying to do.
