Feniks··on U.S. considers adding nuclear cruise missiles to destroyers and submarines
I thought we had agreed that tactical nuclear weapons are an evolutionary dead end? Are nuclear options on the table again?
Feniks··on What I Learned Burning $14k on YouTube Ads for Candy Japan
https://github.com/kkapsner/CanvasBlocker/releases

All ads and tracking can be blocked if you want them to. Its a arms race.

Feniks··on KaiOS – A Smartphone Operating System
How many non Apple phones run iOS?

The strength of Android is that you can customize it. Some people like Touchwizz. I prefer oxygenOS.

Feniks··on What I Learned Burning $14k on YouTube Ads for Candy Japan
I love the marketing industry. Everyone is overfishing in the same ocean. People's income don't increase much year to year but internet ad spending sees double digit growth!

My budget allows me to spend €500 on entertainment/leisure per month. You can bombard me with advertising all day but that's not going to change my finances.

Feniks··on Airlines inching closer to dynamic pricing
If an airliner can read social media and find out you have a important funeral to attend they can triple the price. But I'd hope that would be illegal.
Feniks··on In an Era of ‘Smart’ Things, Sometimes Dumb Stuff Is Better
"anonymized data"

That's if you're lucky. I don't want to sound paranoid but if there are sensors in your house its only a matter of time before someone wants to use them.

Feniks··on In an Era of ‘Smart’ Things, Sometimes Dumb Stuff Is Better
Yep the whole internet of things isn't my cup of tea either. I'm not letting my TV iniate an outbound connection without permission.

Security is a nightmare and I don't want to be profiled by anyone.

Feniks··on How to Get Wyoming Wind to California, and Cut 80% of U.S. Carbon Emissions
Yeah here in Europe lots of farmers are happy with wind turbines on their land. It helps them earn a stable income.
Feniks··on Apple in China: who holds the keys?
This seems to be a global trend. Trump in the US, populism and fascists in Europe and Jinping in China.
Feniks··on Apple in China: who holds the keys?
What little protection remains is a relic of the seventies. An interesting time in America. A time of strong resentment against the government after Vietnam and Nixon. There was a really powerful TRUE left wing in Washinton that had power.

Ofcourse even back then they never extended FISA to non US citizens. Nobody legislates the CIA.

Feniks··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
You would presumably have to compromise a lot of ballot boxes in order to influence an election. This would require a coordinated conspiracy potentially involving thousands of people.

If you can pull that off you might as well say fuck it and take over the country with force.

Feniks··on Apple in China: who holds the keys?
Not public, just the government. And Chinese government has better security than Equifax at least.
Feniks··on Crazy new Swedish bill makes sharing music and TV as bad a “crime” as manslaughter
I would imagine that Swedish politicians are also vulnerable from lobbying and US diplomatic pressure.
Feniks··on Online voting in Finland: Conclusions and recommendations (2017) [pdf]
There are currently 20 political parties in parliament representing vast ideological differences. They couldn't even agree on what pizza to order if their life depended on it lol.
Feniks··on China's Xinjiang surveillance is the dystopian future nobody wants
You're not wrong, article looks at it from a Western viewpoint. This surveillance is actually not new. Its a throwback to imperial China, with technology added to it. I can imagine a lot of Chinese prefer it to lawlessness.

It does cost vast amounts of money though. China spends more on surveillance and the police than the entire military budget.

Feniks··on UPS is working on a fleet of 50 custom-built electric delivery trucks
They'll need this in Europe. Lots of cities are clamping down on pollution.
Feniks··on Nobody Wants to Let Google Win the War for Maps All Over Again
Yeah, self driving cars may work in Arizona but how about rush hour Amsterdam or New York? In my country it might work for long haul trucks on highways in the near future. But I dont see a use case beyond that.
Feniks··on Advertisers Tuning Out TV in Sign of Trouble for Media Companies
Yes. Thankfully companies aren't free to sell my data to the highest bidder so my phone number and email are not public for every salesman to use.

Unfortunately companies I do business with are allowed to try to sell me things. But the Outlook spam filter is pretty good.

Feniks··on A Chinese Casino company has set out to take over the U.S. island of Saipan
Yeah, isn't Saipan in the middle of nowhere? And its not a famous tourist destination like Tahiti.
Feniks··on A Chinese Casino company has set out to take over the U.S. island of Saipan
You should read about how the US acquired its Pacific teritories. Interesting stuff. I love all those colonialist skeletons in the closet stories. This is nothing new, sadly.
Feniks··on Amazon Studios to Adapt Consider Phlebas, First Novel of the Culture Series
Excession is my favourite but impossible to adapt.
Feniks··on Amazon Studios to Adapt Consider Phlebas, First Novel of the Culture Series
Cool, need something scifi that isn't dystopia. We're already living that. Warminds for president 2020.
Feniks··on Face-verify.js: Monitoring who is physically looking at a website
"flexible and free payment services"

Actually my government already has rules on that. Using my debetcard at a store, withdrawing money from an ATM or transferring money between bankaccounts is free.

Its almost as if we live in 21st century already!

Feniks··on Face-verify.js: Monitoring who is physically looking at a website
Ethics go out the window when you have a mortgage to pay. The tech industry also lives in a bubble.
Feniks··on The Car of the Future Will Sell Your Data
Doesn't work that way. Companies change their privacy policies all the time.

No the data industry should have been euthanized years ago.

Feniks··on The Car of the Future Will Sell Your Data
In America sure, lost cause. I expect this wouldn't fly in EU unless you give your consent. And why would you?
Feniks··on An American served a year in prison for copyright conduct that is legal in EU
Even if it had been illegal nobody would be sent to prison over it. Just a fine and probation.
Feniks··on China’s tech industry is catching up with Silicon Valley
I doubt most Chinese even know what Google is by this point and they certainly don't need it.
Feniks··on China’s tech industry is catching up with Silicon Valley
Not surprising. The things you can do with your smartphone in China makes the US and Europe look like a third world country.
Feniks··on Facebook ordered to delete illegally collected data by Belgian court
We'll survive I'm sure. I see the US not as example but as a warning.
