ElongatedTowel··on Firefox 39.0 released
I haven't seen many people mentioning this problem before. I've seen it come up in discussions on the current AMD GPU lines. Hard to say who is to blame, but it's rarely obvious just how many problems there are before buying a card. I got a cheap R7 260x which seems to have trouble with waking up from low power states. Some people even made custom BIOS's to fight the problem.

I don't know how more modern stuff like accelerated transforms, canvas, WebGL or DirectWrite play into that equation. Browsing seems to pull out GPU's from the lowest power modes constantly, which might cause these problems on a wide variety of GPUs.

Should msvc be the go-to compiler on Windows for C++? I was getting back into the language and was quickly reminded of all the compiler and dependency hazzle, especially when coding for several operating systems. On top of that some older solutions aren't even a good idea anymore, like the whole mingw vs mingw-w64 crap.

Seems to me that from a precompiled binary and build management perspective it's just the easiest way to use whatever is best supported on each platform. Which seems to be clang on MacOS, gcc/clang on Linux and msvc on Windows.

I had to use chromiumembeddedframework in one project and compiling it with gcc or clang on Windows isn't even a choice. Even if there is a way to get it to work, it's a huge project that takes quite a lot of resources to build. Even if it was easy, prebuild is still a lot faster.

With the newest version always beeing free and tools like CMake beeing able to generate projects the only downside I can see is that msvc would dictate the features I'm able to use.

ElongatedTowel··on Firefox 31.0
They removed browser.tabs.closeButtons. It's now impossible to hide the close buttons without css fiddling. I don't get it. What benefit is there to removing that feature?

Same with clearing the download list. They removed that feature with the last major UI overhaul.

The number of tiny addons I have to install just to get features back that have been removed for no reason at all is starting to get too large...

I wish one of these services would allow signing up without a sim and allow chatting over a desktop client.
ElongatedTowel··on Harry Eng – Master Bottle Filler
Probably not how it was done, but is it possible to craft a bottle in such a way that the refraction index makes the content appear larger than it actually is?

ElongatedTowel··on Facebook Hidden Friends Vulnerability?
I just played with the graph search and that thing is creepy and powerful. It pains me that I'm drawn to such tools and I definitely need to stay away from that one.

ElongatedTowel··on Painless Windows Workstation Setup with Boxstarter
Those tools are great and all, but my setup usually involves more than just installing applications.

I have a huge pile of registry files which change a lot of windows behaviour. I have configuration files which need to be copied to the right places. I want certain shortcuts in certain places with certain icons. No tool is able to do those things nor are the ones who can do one of these very good or complete.

On paper it doesn't sound so complicated. Install these 12 applications, copy these dotfiles to $HOME, these to $SETUPLOCATION. Setup shortcuts and disable the Caps Lock Key, the Firewall and the Library function.

In reality I have a ton of tools stacking ontop of each other littering everything with package identification files. Tools which only download over the net because they act like package managers but probably fail because the network hasn't been setup (which they probably can't do on their own anyway). And if the application you want is not available you spent more time creating packages than the whole process would have saved you even if you ran it a hundred times. Tools which describe the whole process in lovely xml files. Modifications are chosen from a list and never have what you want and the scripting support for additional features looks more complicated than the lovely registry file that contains ""Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,01,00,3a,00,00,00,5b,e0,\ 00,00,5c,e0,00,00,00,00" which probably doesn't make sense to anyone.

ElongatedTowel··on Caloric restriction reduces age-related and all-cause mortality in rhesus monkeys
To add another perspective to this. If we assume that after a period of adaption eating less is just as much of a joy as eating a bit too much from time to time, there are still other factors.

Most of them are a product of vanity, but they still shape our culture.

How would I look if I reduce calories? I would lose a substantial amount of muscle mass. I would be weaker. I could not recover from endurance and strength work as fast as I'm used to.

If we throw all reasonable studies into a bucket and have them guide our lives, what would happen?

I wouldn't be tan. I wouldn't grow as large because small people supposedly live longer (though this is of course not something we can influence yet). I would have a very low muscle tonus as well as mass and only sufficient muscular endurance and size to do whatever I have to do (which is very little compared to a blacksmith in 1407). I would share a grey substance (heck, let's keep the name soylent) with my date that has everything I need to live. I have no car to reduce my carbon footprint. I will avoid the sun in general due to my skin color which is very prone to cancer (thankfully my children will be genetically altered). I will gladly try to avoid talking about any of this because saying "Don't you think beeing vegan is awesome?" will lead to an imaginary bullet flying in my general direction.

Let's have a vote of how many women find this lifestyle that will carry me into my 100s so mind-boggling attractive while I'm still in my 20s.

ElongatedTowel··on WTF, HTML and CSS?
Border-box is great, but whenever I have to use 3rd party code all hell breaks lose. You can mix both, but only applying border-box to your own code is tricky and the mental overhead is quite annoying. Even then some minor glitches can occur which you might not even spot in most cases. For example nanoScroller.js exposes Firefox's scrollbars when zooming because there is no way to hide them via CSS and the code to hide them underneath other elements breaks when using border-box.

Not even sure how to handle such problems.

ElongatedTowel··on Killing Windows XP Wastes Billions
It's pretty simple. Give everyone who's still using Windows XP a stick of 4 GB DDR2 memory. They will then proceed to pirate Windows 7.

ElongatedTowel··on "We are getting 100 new registrations every second."
The cycle of messanging.

"We need a way to communicate over the internet". Email was born.

"We need a way to communicate with groups". Messaging boards and mailing lists are born.

"We need a way to communicate quickly and privately". Email is now only a tool for spam, registration mails and professionalism. AIM, ICQ and MSN are born. Email lists are "when you click on that list button in Outlook" to the general public.

"We need a way to communicate on the go". Messaging boards die. People use Facebook to chat. Twitter grows. Old-style protocols can't keep up despite offering more. SMS is that thing that does exactly the same but costs money.

"We need a way to communicate with groups again". No one was using boards anymore so no one developed new and edgy alternatives. Discourse is born. Nothing new is offered, but JavaScript! Ajax! Frameworks! Apps!

"We need a way to communicate quickly and privately again". Old protocols are reinvented. Poorly. WhatApps and competitors arise. People using XMPP and OTR die of loneliness. Solved problems are solved again. Poorly. But now there's an app for that. Even on Windows Phone (never seen one in the wild).

Time to reinvent Email. Or not.

ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: Cloned side project
I have a similar problem. I'm working on a static site generator. It improves on some ideas other people had, but it isn't exactly unique. With several hundred similar projects out there thats almost impossible anyway. It serves my needs, but it isn't exactly mature.

I'm always seeking for a new one that solved the annoyances other projects had so I can just use that one instead. But there is always something off. I could improve the code or give the author a suggestion. Problem is, I'm in dire need of a portfolio. A whole project is far more impressive than one or two patches or a mere suggestion in someones issue tracker.

In the end I would be releasing code I don't really intend to use as soon as something else has all I need. One that probably no one would be using. Perfectionism and pride suddenly come into play.

ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: What have you recently learned about yourself?
I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. Do you mean that it's easier to do something bad because we are surrounded by bad things happening? Or that it's easier to get rotten thoughts because we know so much about things that happened, are happening, or that were justified in ancient times?
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: What have you recently learned about yourself?
An often repeated thought. Yet at some point (usually when children or rape is involved) people tend to suddenly forget about tolerance or sympathy and throw around death sentences, castration or torture. There are certain mistakes one can not do even once in most societies. And in some cases, or rather in some countries you won't have a life to return to (or you're dead in the first place).
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: What have you recently learned about yourself?
Similar. In my case not violence and not necessarily targeted at other people, but I surprised myself how twisted my morals can get.

I even contemplated suicide about it. Of course people come rushing and tell you that you have a mental illness because no one in his right mind would think of killing himself for something that might as well not happened as no one took notice of it. But it is in my mind and I have to life with my mind.

Then again, centuries ago people raped and murdered and yet aspired to become great people. And some did. Certainly they never thought about ending their lifes merely because a million other people hoped they would die in a ditch.

Excuse my lack of knowledge in terms of mail encryption, but wouldn't the knowledge of communication be enough to warrant further investigation, even if the text itself is encrypted?
ElongatedTowel··on Your best passive income? (2014)
How does something like this make so much money? If a friend send me the link I would demand reparations.
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: What language should I develop in?
Then you start replacing the Django ORM with SQLAlchemy and the templating system with Jinja2 and the circle is complete.
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN? State of python greenfield development as to versions?
Is there a way to check compatibility with less known packages? I use Flask quite often and it has been Python 3 compatible for a while, but there are a lot of extensions for it which of course can't be found in such a list. Some only mention support in their changelogs, some not at all.
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: Which platform do you prefer and why, Ghost or Pelican?
Ghost is nice, but it doesn't quite fill the same niche. Its ease of use comes from its dynamic parts like the editor. Certainly can't use those if I only want static output without some steps inbetween and especially not if the server doesn't run any interpreter.
ElongatedTowel··on 2x 40 min of train everyday. Best way to spend them?
Finding good stuff is so damn hard. I'm listening to that stuff whenever I do anything that doesn't require too much focus. Time that adds up.

Three I can recommend:

http://shoptalkshow.com/ - Webdesign and development mostly

http://javascriptjabber.com/ - If you're interested in JavaScript development

http://www.dancarlin.com//disp.php/hharchive - Free older recordings of history podcasts. He adds a lot of emotion and perhaps bias to every story but as a result they are never dry and often from an unusual perspective

ElongatedTowel··on Searching the Internet for evidence of time travelers
That poses the question whether a civilization that is advanced enough to build a dyson sphere would be able to build a second one somewhere else. The species would have enough time to collect energy and improve the machine until no reachable sun would be usable. And though we don't carry nuclear reactors in our watches (I guess smartphone would be more reasonable these days) we might carry fusion reactors in the year 38000.
ElongatedTowel··on Searching the Internet for evidence of time travelers
That point is often brought up. But we don't really know how a time-machine could potentially work, so why is teleportation a necessity? If you want to travel to the future you would abuse time delation. While all means to do so pose certain problems none of them involve teleportation. If traveling to the past would work in a similar way the time-machine would move trough every moment until it reaches its destination. If it never has to leave earth or its orbit to do so it would always be affected by gravity and as such end up where you want it to.
ElongatedTowel··on Ask HN: How do you wake up?
My problem with sleep in general is that I need about 8 hours to function and to get the most out of exercise and studies, but I have a much easier time getting up if I'm sleeping only 6 hours or even less. Haven't found a solution to that.

But if I allow myself to get up after 6 hours of sleep a combination of having drank too much before going to bed and not closing the blinds works best. I know that sleeping in perfect darkness is supposed to be a good thing. But getting up in the darkness doesn't work so well for me. The need to pee is a strong motivator as well.
