Eavolution··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
I bought a pair of 501s recently and they barely lasted 6 months. I do a fair bit of cycling which seemed to very quickly wear through them. I'm really not sure what to buy if I want things that last a long time now.
Eavolution··on Slow software for a burning world
Reddit really messed up a couple of years ago with the killing off of 3rd party apps and u/spez generally being entirely out of touch, that made such an impact that to this day whenever I find a reddit thread on something I usually see a comment along the lines of "contents deleted in protest".

That permanently lost me from reddit, I tried kbin.social for as long as it was up and I really liked using it. I never really got on with lemmy for some reason. The outcome ended up being me just not using reddit like things, and I really don't miss it that much.

Eavolution··on All BART trains were stopped due to ‘computer networking problem’
I think it does genuinely feel like a limitation in a lot of cases, and I think it's unhelpful to pretend it doesn't. However it also is very convenient in others.

Everything has it's place, in an ideal area if I was wanting to go a short-medium distance I'd go on a bike, if I wanted a drink or to carry more than practical on my bike or to go a medium length I'd take public transport, and if I wanted to take a lot of stuff, or go in a time sensitive manner, or not want to worry about the last bus, or go somewhere rural I'd take the car.

I don't think good public transport can replace cars in all situations, but it is an extremely good option to have for situations that suit it (which for most people is likely most, but probably not all, of the time).

Eavolution··on First American pope elected and will be known as Pope Leo XIV
I know nothing about him recently or have any interest in Catholicism really, but 2012 is a long old time ago. 13 years is more than enough time for someone to have changed their opinion on something like this, so I'm not sure how valuable it is to look at statements that long ago.
Eavolution··on EPA Plans to Shut Down the Energy Star Program
To be fair I don't even know where to buy dishwasher powder or gel. I am in the EU and have literally never seen it in any supermarket. I'd buy it if it was available but I don't think I can anywhere.
Eavolution··on The Death of Daydreaming: What we lose when phones take away boredom
I think cycling is a particularly good example of this. Using the phone on a mount for navigation can help you go more interesting places you're less familiar with, but you have to look at your surroundings to be vaguely safe. I don't cycle with music or anything, I don't think I'd feel safe doing that but I really enjoy a long cycle with the phone on a mount for directions.

A garmin or something would likely be better for this, but I don't particularly want to buy one and the phone does a fine job.

Eavolution··on Irish privacy watchdog hits TikTok with Є530M fine over data transfers to China
I agree but over half a billion euros is quite the price, if the price is high enough it won't be viable to break the laws.
Eavolution··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
I found YouTube completely insufferable until installing ublock origin, sponsorblock, and youtube redux to return to a more old school interface. How a single website single-handedly justifies 3 extensions in my browser I will never know but those geniuses at google have managed it.

Can't recommend youtube redux alongside disabling watch and search history highly enough.

Eavolution··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
I've a petrol car so I don't really know, but what's stopping the power/timing controls from being buttons on the charger wall unit? Even a local network app I'd have no issue with, but I really don't want my car or charging unit on the internet.
Eavolution··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
A lot of northern accents have heavy Scottish influences, but I will agree they're far from an English accent and more similar to Donegal and Scottish accents.
Eavolution··on Waiting 100 years for a home isn't a housing crisis, it's a moral collapse
Why is it supposed to be good? Having lived in a (relatively small) city and in the countryside, I vastly prefer the countryside and actually find it more convenient in a lot of ways. An example would be the shops are a lot bigger as the land is cheap, so a 20m drive in the country gets me to a massive shop, but in the city half an hour on a bus or a 15m drive gets me to a much smaller one.
Eavolution··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
That sounds like a reasonable compromise to me, it's already what happens with ID for pubs etc so I don't think it's much different to the status quo
Eavolution··on Discord's face scanning age checks 'start of a bigger shift'
What if I don't want them to have any personally identifiable information about me in a database?
Eavolution··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from ‘reciprocal’ tariffs
Hang on are tarriffs not effective on date of purchase? I'm not American but it seems madness to apply them at any other time as then no one knows what will actually need paid if you've someone like Trump changing them frequently.
Eavolution··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
I wouldn't say most, but a large portion. You should be able to look up in advance which ones are funny about custom roms, the key words are safetynet or play integrety api.

My solution to this is put the bank apps that are annoying about it on an old phone (I knew I'd find a use for one eventually!)

Eavolution··on How University Students Use Claude
Currently in university and my experience is that it heavily depends on the module. For a lot your statement's probably accurate, however for others it really isn't. For example we have a microprocessors module which is programming for an rp2040 in c, but also manually setting up interrupt handlers etc in assembly. All of the LLM's are completely useless for it, they tell you that the rp2040 works in ways it just doesn't and are actively unhelpful with the misinformation. The only students who can do well in that module are the ones that understand the material well and go to the datasheet and documentation instead of an LLM.
Eavolution··on What if we made advertising illegal?
I actually in principle have no fundamental problem with advertising, but it's execution on the internet I have many, many issues with. Putting an ad in a newspaper, or on the side of a building, or during a break in a tv show seems perfectly reasonable to me.

What I absolutely have issues with is targeted advertising, having to modify content to make it advertiser friendly (i.e. reasonable people on YouTube having to avoid swearing/use infuriating euphemisms for self harm or suicide etc in case it makes the video not advertiser friendly), and the frankly offensive and unjustifiable amount of tracking that goes along with it.

I wish we could ban dynamic advertising (can't think of a better term, as in targeted, tailored advertising that is aware of what it's being advertised against) and just allow static advertising.

I also wish it could be codified in law that what is shown to me on my computer is entirely up to me, and if I want to block advertising on my computer, that is my choice, in the same way I can make a cup of tea during the ad breaks in tv, and skip over the advert pages on the paper.

Eavolution··on Everyone knows all the apps on your phone
Actually windows can keep them in memory for a lot longer than you'd think, hence Mimikatz https://github.com/ParrotSec/mimikatz
Eavolution··on Waymos crash less than human drivers
I think my car insurance policy actually does detail what they believe every part of your body + your life to be worth, it might be my old policy though. From memory an arm was £2,000

[Edit]: found the policy: death: £2,500 arm or leg: £2,000 blindness in one or both eyes: £2,000

Eavolution··on London's Heathrow Airport announces complete shutdown due to power outage
While we're doing wacky units for energy instead of the joule, I'd personally prefer roughly 360 DeLorean's per day (assuming the 1.21 gigawatts are required for roughly 10 seconds)
Eavolution··on Sayonara, R35: Nissan Japan has stopped taking orders for the GT-R
I'm not a car enthusiast, however having driven both manual and automatic cars I just find driving manual cars more fun, and I imagine a lot of enthusiasts do too. I feel more in control of the car, and getting good performance feels like it's taking skill, even in a slower car. I don't think I'd find anything satisfying about driving an automatic, but faster car, in the same way.
Eavolution··on WhatsApp, Signal Sign letter against UK privacy bill, say they will not comply (2023)
Maybe it's time for people to host small encrypted messaging servers at home
Eavolution··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
What are you actually supposed to do in the UK if you oppose this sort of thing to stop laws like this coming in? It feels like the government has been incredibly out of touch for the last number of years.
Eavolution··on Evolution of Whois Protocol to RDAP (2019)
I posted it a few days ago because the date specified to move from whois to rdap was recent, and I am learning about various network protocols at the minute and I found it interesting.
Eavolution··on Farewell potholes? UK team invents self-healing road surface
Where we lived the road was very country, grass up the middle etc. A gas company went to put mains gas in, and they made such a bad job of the road it was almost undrivable. The council actually made them go back and resurface it fully, after that the road's one of the best around, certainly for the size of it.

The damage that gas company did to it and the state they left it in after putting the gas in though was atrocious.

Eavolution··on Steam Brick: No screen, no controller, just a power button and a USB port
I'm also from NI, our school officially used year 8 to year 14, but everyone knew both ways around and just switched between them.

Edit: I should clarify I'm currently in uni so this was fairly recent.

Eavolution··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
How does that work if the car's sold? The car itself doesn't know it's been sold.
Eavolution··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
I would really like a product for like £40 that's essentially a very small (4" screen maybe? maybe smaller?) locked down android phone that's entire purpose is to run 2fa apps (maybe including banks), this would not only separate my banks from my phone so I can flash whatever OS I want to it, solve the convenience issue of needing 2 big phones to do this otherwise, and stop 2fa apps from leading to distraction.
Eavolution··on My Struggle with Doom Scrolling
I have watch history off on YouTube, if I go onto the shorts tab on YouTube it says "recommendations are off, we rely on your watch history...".

It still shows me shorts from subscriptions on the subscriptions tab, which I don't mind. If you scroll on them it shows you ones from other subscriptions before stopping and showing that message again.

In searches it does show shorts, but will only let you scroll through ~5 before that message comes up again.

I really like this setup because I can see my subscriptions shorts, which are generally fine, and it doesn't let me spend more than like 2m scrolling.

Eavolution··on F-Droid's Progress and What's Coming in 2025
The official Syncthing has been discontinued on android, I believe due to the difficulty of keeping up with the changing APIs.
