Daunk··on Ask HN: I have 176 logins/accounts. How many do you have?
Currently at 307.
Daunk··on We will be shutting down neeva.com
This is a bit off-topic, but sadly, I have to agree. I AM a paying Kagi user, but the new limits have hit me extremely hard. I'm now paying twice as much per month and still almost hitting my monthly limit. I really don't want Kagi to go away but I think they have to adjust their prices if they want to keep thier customers around, me included
Daunk··on Microsoft Small Basic
I still think BlitzMax NG is the way to go if you want something similar to BASIC - https://blitzmax.org/
Daunk··on Fuck being productive
I work similar hours, but I WANT to do something productive! But I just don't have the strength or energy. Chores also eats a lot of time...
Daunk··on Krita: A professional free and open source painting program
Yeah seems like that works now. Showing content while dragging however still doesn't work.
Daunk··on Krita: A professional free and open source painting program
I feel like Krita is the next best thing after Photoshop, however; the interface really doesn't sit right with me at all. It feels very counter intuitive and I struggle finding what I need. I also don't like that "windows" inside the "main window" isn't really a thing unless you use the software(?) renderer, and even then it's sub-par at best. Like, I want to have 4 or 5 images open and see them all at the same time.
Daunk··on Secret colours of the Commodore 64 (2017)
I'm on 144Hz and it just looks like a solid purple.
Daunk··on Learn Vim (2021)
I love Vim, it's just a shame it takes 200 years to setup properly.
Daunk··on ChatGPT Cheat Sheet
It's working just fine right now over at - https://chat.openai.com
Daunk··on Bitwarden design flaw: Server side iterations
I read that as a "total of 600 000" iterations, so 300 000 locally and 300 000 on the server. Am I wrong?
Daunk··on GitHub Sponsors will stop supporting PayPal
I actually had no idea PayPal was still around, I figured it was dead years ago... it should be dead...
Daunk··on Godot for AA/AAA game development – What's missing?
I don't make a lot of "games", but I do make a lot of tools these days (native OS GUI/console-cli etc.). And I feel like Godot wouldn't really be a good fit for such things, or am I wrong?
Daunk··on Revisiting KDE
KDE is what kept me away from Linux for a long time. I think everything they make "looks bad" (layout, design, graphics etc.) and I feel like they're just pushing out half-finished features. It's really a desktop about quantity over quality.

Cinnamon is what finally "clicked" for me.

I wish KDE the best of luck, but I just cannot stand it.

Daunk··on Notepad Calculator
Make it a VSCode extension. (There's probably one already)
Daunk··on Lite XL: A lightweight text editor written in C and Lua
That is a method I've been toying with. But it's still such as hassle to quickly prototype something this way.

It's also near impossible to get I J K L working as the cursor keys in VIM without having some major interference.

Daunk··on Lite XL: A lightweight text editor written in C and Lua
I've wanted to write a small text editor for a while - cause I feel like most editors don't fit my workflow - but I've been a bit too busy with work.

I don't really care about fancy features or extensions. Let me just create "tasks" (for compiling and such) and let me execute these tasks with a single button, then let me see the output from these tasks that eventually execute some application/compiler etc. That'll let me use it for any language and task.

I'd also preferably like to use I J K L as the cursor keys and toggle "Mode" (VIM style) with TAB.

And the whole thing should just run in your terminal, which can already render text nicely.

Daunk··on Spotifyd
Has anyone ever gotten this to work?

I must have tried it a dozen times by now, but never once gotten it to work.

Daunk··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
I got PLEX Lifetime just last year, cause I realized that I've basically paid for it multiple times across the years I've been a subscriber. So Lifetime's been worth it for me, especially when it's on discount.
Daunk··on Ten influential programming languages (2020)
I just want to say that I still enjoy BASIC, but via BlitzMax NG. It's a good language to quickly prototype things in - https://blitzmax.org/
Daunk··on A Vim Guide for Advanced Users
I enjoy using Vim, but I feel like it's a pain to use with lesser known languages. Especially when it comes to compiling and such.
Daunk··on Dwarf Fortress – randomly generated, persistent fantasy world
Noted. I will buy it on both itch.io and Steam then.
Daunk··on Dwarf Fortress – randomly generated, persistent fantasy world
I'm so happy seeing DF reach a larger audience with the Steam release, it's been such a joy to experiment with over the years, and I feel like Zach and Tarn deserve a lot more recognition.

Here's my personal DF tileset - https://github.com/Hezkore/dwarf-fortress-assets

Daunk··on IRCv3 2022 Spec round-up
Is there a modern client and server that supports all of these recent additions?
Daunk··on Exploring Mastodon
I recently bumped into this issue and simply decided to not bother with Mastodon.
Daunk··on Ask HN: How did you find joy in life?
I've felt the same way for over 15 years, no solution in sight. I've tried the meds for many years, I've tried therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and many other things and nothing has worked. I've also started to feel less interested in things I thought I was interested in.

The only thing really keeping me alive and fighting is my girlfriend and my family, which I have pretty poor contact with if I'm honest, but I still don't want to upset them.

Daunk··on Ask HN: Advice that changed your life?
"just do it"
Daunk··on Why I use Jellyfin for my home media library
But I love my Plex! I can search for basically any movie, click "add to watchlist" and some magic happens behind the scenes and an hour or two later; that movie is in my library, ready to watch with subtitles and all. All my work buddies have the same system setup as well, so we're all sharing libraries to create an insane network of media, fit for any taste.
Daunk··on Show HN: Jerrica, a 100% scheduled, Web Audio native, MOD player for JavaScript
I recently made a little tool for grabbing and searching mod music from the modland database - https://github.com/Hezkore/Modget
Daunk··on Photopea: A free Photoshop alternative making millions
I've tried Photopea a million times, but the interface always messes up somehow. I just tried it, and sure enough, a huge grey box is stuck on the right side of the screen and can't be removed.
Daunk··on The Mod Archive
I've listened to tracker music since the 80's and I still do it basically every day. Whenever I have a bad day or feel the lack of motivation; tracker music always helps. And to be honest, it's probably what's getting me through my 20 year long depression.

There are so many good tracker songs I could recommend, but I'll instead list a couple of my favourite artists: Elwood, Radix/Rymdlego/Mosaik, Fearofdark, Necros, Purple Motion, Lizardking, Malmen, Beek, Dubmood, Skaven, Virt and so many many more!
