Daunk··on Show HN: Thoreau BASIC – What if BASIC hadn't gone out of fashion?
I still enjoy and use https://blitzmax.org/
Daunk··on Show HN: Lofi Cities – Pixel-art city nights with browser-generated lofi
Unpopular opinion, but I think the "Lofi" sound or style ruins perfectly fine songs.
Daunk··on Mistral raises €3B
*losing trillions
Daunk··on I was wrong about MCPs
I don't get it... it looks flat to me?
Daunk··on TwitterWebViewer also no longer in operation, following a request from X Corp
Is anything really "free"?
Daunk··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
XMPP always seemed great, buy I have yet to find a client that can replace Telegram's client on both desktop and mobile.
Daunk··on Zed DeltaDB
It still doesn't actually display a window my end until I press a keyboard key or move the mouse. So very often I sit and wait for it to open, only to realize I have to press a random key for it to unhide.

Terrible Linux support.

Daunk··on Bitchat is now on Radicle
I downloaded the Radicle desktop client yesterday, entered my new username and password and... nothing happened. Tried restarting the app and do it again, but I never got past the account creation/login screen. So my Radicle adventure ended there.
Daunk··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
I just run Gemma4 12B MLX via Ollama and it's been doing fantastic work!
Daunk··on Nativ: Run frontier open models locally on your Mac
Is Gemma 4 E2B actually "usable"? I've been running Gemma 4 12B and it handles everything very well! But the second I've moved down to E4B it's been unable to perform the simplest of tasks. So I can't even imagine how E2B would do... Or am I doing something wrong?
Daunk··on Thunderbird Desktop settings research: what we learned from your feedback
Wow, finally! Thanks for sharing.
Daunk··on Thunderbird Desktop settings research: what we learned from your feedback
I want to use Thunderbird, but it's so... weird. And why can it not be minimized to tray? Am I supposed to sit and keep the Thunderbird window open at all times?
Daunk··on EndBASIC 0.14: Are we multimedia yet?
https://blitzmax.org is always going to be my preferred BASIC.
Daunk··on Digital Identity Management in Norway Is a Catastrophe
I absolutely agree. I just don't like this American superiority on HN.
Daunk··on Digital Identity Management in Norway Is a Catastrophe
Probably because they're not corrupt America. They don't walk around checking their back every minute for "Uncle Freedom" screwing them over.
Daunk··on DeepClaude – Claude Code agent loop with DeepSeek V4 Pro
You mean `exec claude "$@"`
Daunk··on Zed 1.0
1.0 and Zed still won't appear until I touch my mouse or press a key after it's been started...
Daunk··on State of Kdenlive
Every KDE app I try (and the Plasma desktop) seems so good on paper, and they promise me the world! Then, wen I actually try them out, they always end up crashing or doing something weird. Like I cannot stand GIMP, so I've tried using Krita, but I don't think I've ever managed to finish something in it before it crashes. It's the same with Kdenlive.

Damn shame.

Daunk··on Fixing a monitor that goes black, off or blinks due to static electricity (2023)
This happens to me when I brush off my mousepad too fast with my palm. It will also cause my wireless headset to "reboot".
Daunk··on Fedware: Government apps that spy harder than the apps they ban
Heh. American funny
Daunk··on Why I love NixOS
What would the in between be?
Daunk··on Xfce is great
I recommend changing the key to Super. As holding down Alt and clicking/dragging is often used by many applications and simply won't work then.
Daunk··on Xfce is great
That is not XFCE itself, that is up to your theme. I'm on the Dracula theme and have about 16 pixels.
Daunk··on Xfce is great
I've been using XFCE for a long time now. I often give GNOME and KDE Plasma a try, but I have to tweak GNOME so much to make it usable, and KDE Plasma keeps crashing and has weird issues (Steam friends list being delayed for example), which just got worse when they switched to Wayland. I really do feel like XFCE on x11 is the logical choice, it "just works" and every app runs well (Discord has broken hotkeys on Wayland), it's stable, and whenever people see my XFCE setup they think it's something like KDE Plasma because it looks so "good" (or different at least). It even works well even on my 32:9 aspect ratio monitor, which isn't something I can say about some other desktops.
Daunk··on Linux is good now
Spot on.
Daunk··on Linux is good now
They started with Hyprland, GNOME or KDE Plasma. Most of them have ended up using Cinnamon, and the rest use XFCE.
Daunk··on Linux is good now
I'm not against Wayland, but I think Wayland is currently not good for the Linux ecosystem. I've had lots of friends try Linux, and they've had issues with Discord global keyboard shortcuts not working, and window positions not restoring at application start, and lots of other small issues, which add up in the end. But once they switched to X11, they've all been very happy.
Daunk··on GNOME 50 completes the migration to Wayland, dropping X11 backend code
I don't understand how Wayland is becoming the norm when it can't even restore window positions yet.
Daunk··on European.cloud: A Curated Directory of EU-Based Cloud Providers
This is my go-to site!
Daunk··on Show HN: Halloy – Modern IRC client
I've tried to use this, but I'm on multiple servers with tons of channels, and it gets a bit unwieldy without tabs. I also can't get it to minimize to tray, and having to "keep it open" at all times is somewhat annoying. I'll stick with Quassel for now.

Really impressive work though, you should be proud!
