D9u··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
Some of the best hackers I know are in India, and they don't use Microsoft products... I'm talking truly gifted people.

I myself am a BSD fanatic, but I recommend Linux based systems to all of my Windows using friends.

D9u··on Why Isn't the Fourth Amendment Classified as Top Secret?

Today every terrorist with access to a pocket Constitution
The above sentiment leans towards labeling any who dare possess a pocket constitution as potential terrorists, which is absurd.

Do people in the IC assume that terrorists want to harm us because our freedoms?

Does the wholesale interception of electronic communications based upon the premise of someone might be a terrorist make us any safer?

The Ft. Hood shootings, the Boston bombings, and other evil acts, were not prevented by any of the un-American spying by the alphabet gangs, furthermore, when viewed with an objective eye, acts of terror have actually decreased in the last few decades. Some may argue the point that this reduction is a direct result of the omnipresent intrusions by the Five Eyes crew, and if so I'd like to hear some reasonable explanations as to why some rather major attacks have occurred in spite of the spying.

Seriously, is the article supposed to be a joke? How can any part of a covenant between a government and its people be considered to be Top Secret?

D9u··on NSA surveillance program reaches ‘into the past’ to retrieve, replay phone calls
Sadly, it seems that the majority have become inured to the offensive over reach of agencies such as NSA, GCHQ, etc.

The only way to play it as if the country where the system is being employed is your own.

Yes, I said it... I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the aforementioned country is the USA.

D9u··on 'Netflix for piracy' Popcorn Time saved by fans
Screw Netflix!

$7.99 per month and they don't even have the last half of season 5 - Breaking Bad.

Many movies are unavailable to US viewers, as services such as https://hola.org/ have shown us.

Large selection? It seems like every movie I want to watch is "Unavailable for streaming..." or is viewable for an additional $10 fee through their DVD service.

I like Popcorn!

D9u··on Gears of war: When mechanical analog computers ruled the waves
Interestingly, several months ago I came across the following 1953 training video dealing with this same subject.

D9u··on Apple iPhone Will Fail in a Late, Defensive Move (2007)
You took the words right out of my fingers!

It just goes to show how accurate and prescient many "news" organizations really are.

D9u··on Monsanto Owns Us: The Monopoly of Seeds and Intellectual Property Rights

If people can just take their technology and grow it again themselves, there is no way for them to recoup their investment and we simply won't have better crops.
Thousands of years of selective breeding refutes the above statement.

It's not always about ROI. Some of us just like variety. I do agree with your sentiment, it's just the legal aspects that I dislike.

Oh for a world without money & greed!

D9u··on I Knew a Programmer that Went Completely Insane (2013)
Some of us come back from our twisted versions of personal hell...

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Aloha!

D9u··on Monsanto Owns Us: The Monopoly of Seeds and Intellectual Property Rights
I see the patenting of life forms as being insidiously evil.

In the past we had heirloom seeds which, although proprietary, were not patent protected, so people who shared their superior seed stock didn't run afoul of courts and lawyers.

Call me a pitchfork bearing loon but I find patenting life forms to be egregiously reprehensible.

D9u··on How I resurrected my MacBook Pro by putting it in the oven
I had a somewhat similar issue with an Acer Aspire Aspire One ZG5 netbook, except my problem was that the device would power off after about 1.5 minutes from powering on.

Apparently a thermal cutoff switch needed some recalibration/replacement, so my fix was 2 hours in the freezer followed by a few more hours waiting for condensation to evaporate before attempting to power the netbook on again...

I used the above method for nearly a year before acquiring my present laptop, relegating the netbook to my growing pile of disfunctional hardware.

D9u··on Critical crypto bug leaves Linux, hundreds of apps open to eavesdropping
How many linux based servers are online right now? More than Apple devices? Less?
D9u··on Crazy ants take on fire ants and win
A few years ago I had an old Thinkpad which I had not used in a few months when one day I decided to fire it up, but when I opened the lid it was an ant farm!

Not sure of the ant variety, but I'm in Hawai'i and we have little red fire ants in some areas.

D9u··on Comcast Acquiring Time Warner Cable In All Stock Deal Worth $45.2 Billion
Damn! I finally got an acceptable deal from Oceanic Time Warner @ $60 a month for "up to 30 Mbit/sec" with no data cap. (I often see speeds over 50 Mbit/sec)

I hope this deal doesn't throw a wrench in my net connection. I live in a rural area with few options.

D9u··on Ron Paul Launches Snowden Clemency Petition
Claiming that Snowden has aided al Qaeda et al is as ridiculous as the notion that if you smoke cannabis you're funding terrorists!
D9u··on The Facebook Comment That Ruined a Life

The Comal County District Attorney's Office did not intend for Carter to suffer what happened next,
Flanary says, but it was reasonably foreseeable: He was sexually assaulted.
The fact that prisoners are commonly subject to sexual assault, and that this consequence is trotted out as an acceptable deterrent to crime, illustrates just how uncivilized the US prison-industrial-complex is in this, the year 2014. Failure to protect vulnerable and, or, weaker inmates from other inmates shows negligence on the part of the government. This is completely unacceptable as it constitutes cruel & unusual punishment, and is yet another blatant disregard for the rights of We the People.

Then there's the fact that the context of the offensive speech was excluded from evidence.

Disgusting!

D9u··on Password prompts are annoying
I like the idea, but I only see options for mobile devices, no "app" for Linux or BSD variants.

I agree that the current paradigm is flawed, especially when PSK authentication is so easily implemented.

D9u··on Once the full stop meant a sentence was over – now it means you're angry
I always strive to use correct spelling and punctuation regardless of the media used and tend to view people who fail to do so as being less educated than those who take the time to do as I do.

So fuck off if you misconstrue a properly placed bit of punctuation.

D9u··on The NSA’s Secret Role in the U.S. Assassination Program

“turns out I’m really good at killing people.”

The president added, “Didn’t know that was gonna be a strong suit of mine.”
Ironic words for a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

D9u··on Why I avoid SDKs in production
I agree with the article. The last thing I want to do is add another layer of complexity to an already complex application.

More layers of software equals increased chances for vulnerabilities and/or bugs.

D9u··on Linode CLI
Why can't they just give SSH access into a chroot'd environment, or something like that? I hate having to add more stuff to address needs which are already met by commonly used software. (SSH client)

I guess that's why I use VPS instead of Linode.

D9u··on What is really happening in Ukraine
JSOC answers directly to the POTUS, and acts outside the normal channels of the US military.

So, yes, the POTUS can, and does, decide who JSOC will be going after next.

D9u··on What is really happening in Ukraine
How about drone strikes which target and kill a US citizen and his teenage son?
D9u··on What is it like to write a technical book?
I know a guy who used to write technical manuals for Sun Microsystems and he said that he usually ended up working about 3 or 4 months to earn his annual salary. Sounds like a good gig to me!
D9u··on Glasnost: Test whether your ISP is traffic shaping
Sorry. You lost me at Install Java app.
D9u··on How I went from 100 to 0 things (or how I was robbed of all my stuff)
This is why I have dogs. An 80 pound bull dog (or 2, or 3) can be a good deterrent, as well as an alarm, which helps me to sleep well at night.
D9u··on Snowden Calls Russian-Spy Story “Absurd”

Asked today to elaborate on his reasons for alleging that Snowden “had help,” Rogers, through a press aide, declined to comment.
Typical unaccountability from one of our elected public servants. How about letting your constituents know the truth?
