I'm a 50 year old, megalomaniacal, 98th percentile, schizophrenic, whose hobbies include pizza, beer, and vulva.

The internet is my favorite drug.

D9u··on Thank You for Being Expendable
"War is a racket" by 2 time CMOH recipient Maj. Gen. Smedley D. Butler (USMC) details how corporate interests profit from warfare.

http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/warisaracket.html

When I went through infantry training at Ft Benning I learned that the term "infantry" referred to a nation's ability to field soldiers, which is dependent upon the birth rate.

More infants = more soldiers.

Thus, by extrapolation, soldiers, especially infantrymen, are considered to be expendable.

Sadly, bureaucracy has allowed the care given to our veterans to fall short of expectations, but for many of those with military experience such treatment is par for the course.

D9u··on China bans use of Windows 8 on government computers

  > The alternative to Windows 8 is presumably some older Windows.
Not necessarily. There are other, more secure, free, operating systems.
D9u··on Show HN: Where Adblock+ injects 20K CSS rules, HTTPSB injects one
With AdBlock+ and HTTPSB you still get the network traffic from unwanted sites.

AdSuck, from the good folks at Conformal, blocks unwanted connections and thus decreases unwanted network traffic.

D9u··on FCC approves plan to consider paid priority on Internet
The FCC doesn't even agree with ISPs on the definition of what, exactly, constitutes "Broadband" connectivity.

Meanwhile the monopoly in my area continues to receive my payments, no matter what they do.

D9u··on Europe's top court: people have right to be forgotten on Internet

D9u··on Did Israel steal bomb-grade uranium from the United States?
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/11/25/milchan-...

It's also commonly known that Israel is one of the more active espionage opponents of the USA.

D9u··on Did Israel steal bomb-grade uranium from the United States?

  > just commit such a fucking big crime that...
Kill one man, and you're put in prison.

Kill a million and you're the Emperor.

D9u··on GoDaddy Released My Personal Information to a Spammer Troll
The spammer appears to be a religious hypocrite, so why not spam the spammer with religious hypocrisy right from their own playbook?

I would begin with Isaiah 45:7 "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."

D9u··on For $45 Per Month, All the Coffee You Can Drink
Not one cup of coffee in over 50 years...

When someone offers all the beer I drink for one low monthly price, I'll be signing up.

D9u··on U.S. Daily Temperature Anomalies 1964-2013
Thank you... Not sure why I didn't notice this initially. (blames outdated mobile device)
D9u··on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: the cloud platform of choice
Ubuntu still phones home too much for my liking.

That said, I appreciate how much the OS has improved since I first gave "Breezy Badger" a spin a few years ago, and Ubuntu is the obvious choice when I recommend an alternative OS to my non-tech savvy acquaintances.

D9u··on Bitcoin promoter Shrem indicted in NY for money laundering
What's really creepy is the fact that the big bankers can get away with laundering billions in drug cartel profits, yet not a single person has yet to answer for these crimes.

D9u··on Show HN: Poor Man's VPN With a Cheap VPS
I've been using the ssh -C -D 8080 -fN user@server.tld for years now, no VPS needed if you use a free shell account.

Free != lazy

Also, lazy people dislike having to manually configure their web clients.

D9u··on A Statistical Analysis of the Work of Bob Ross
I arrive at the same conclusion... My girlfriend loves to watch "The Joy of Painting," yet she doesn't paint.

It's got to be his soothing tone.

D9u··on U.S. Daily Temperature Anomalies 1964-2013
Too bad the graphics only show the lower 48 states.

Sure, some will claim that, "Alaska is always cold, and Hawai'i is always hot," which is a typical fallacy.

People surf in Alaska, and it snows in Hawai'i. (We just had a hailstorm a few weeks ago.)

http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/25102371/flash-flood-watc...

Back in the 1970's I remember seeing snow fall halfway down the slopes of 13,796 foot Mauna Kea, something we don't see too often anymore.

D9u··on Spiped + SSH = Secure Proxy
Wouldn't -C (compression) help to speed an ssh connection?
D9u··on Spiped + SSH = Secure Proxy
Maybe I'm missing something here...

On my FreeBSD and Linux systems, the ssh -f parameter sends the process to the background, and the -N prevents remote command execution.

D9u··on Spiped + SSH = Secure Proxy
From the link to the OpenSSL vulnerability;

Unfortunately, there's nothing users can do to protect themselves
Um, how about a VPN, or ssh with dynamic forwarding?

I would do something like;

ssh -C -D 8080 -fN user@server.tld

Then it's as simple as setting your web connected applications to use the localhost proxy on port 8080.

D9u··on Working Ridiculously Long Hours is a Sign that Something is Wrong
John Carmack used to put in marathon sessions coding asm for DOOM... As with many other successful people, sometimes the work just flows and you forget about things such as time.

Could it be that those failing are failing because their ideas are just not as great as they had imagined?

D9u··on How Sleep Deprivation Drives The High Failure Rates of Tech Startups
Sleep deprivation was an integral part of my work experience, from working on my dad's farm during the height of the summer harvest, to the Army. If you couldn't keep up, someone else would.

I often go 30, or more, consecutive hours without sleep when working on certain projects.

No drugs involved, no coffee, just a driving desire to accomplish my goals.

I also sometimes go 2 or 3 days without eating a real meal.

I think I got around 3 hours of sleep last night.

D9u··on Linux Commands In Structured Order with Detailed Reference
Interesting how many of those commands are not compatible with FreeBSD.
D9u··on Screw stigma. I’m coming out.
From day one here at HN my profile states that I am schizophrenic... Not that it's done me any good here, but I don't see why I should hide this fact from people I am likely to never meet in real life.

Kudos to those who could care less about social stigma.

D9u··on Photographing A Town That Never Was – The Meta Picture

D9u··on $31.71: The hourly pay it now takes to afford Silicon Valley rent
I didn't just move to Hawai'i, I've lived here my entire life.

That said, I agree with your comment.

I don't live in a mansion by the beach, I'm 22 miles inland, downhill from one of the world's most effusive volcanoes. Where I can afford to live.

D9u··on $31.71: The hourly pay it now takes to afford Silicon Valley rent
Hawaii resident here...

In 1996 I was making $27.95 per hour.

I'm not going to say what I earn now, but it's not that great.

D9u··on U.S. and World Population Clock
I see a discrepancy between the listing of the 10 most populous nations, and the counter...

http://i.imgur.com/Jm9uQSF.png 3. United States 318,892,103

But the counter for the USA (as I write this) says: 317,760,552.

D9u··on Paramilitary police: Cops or soldiers?
Drug warriors = soldiers.
D9u··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
South Africa is in the south?
D9u··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
I agree with you. Using OSS doesn't mean that you will have no software vulnerabilities, but when was the last time you heard a major news story about a Linux based virus?
