BooneJS··on CDC File Transfer
Bay Area broadband is surprisingly bad, and doesn’t fit the outside assumptions of the “Silicon Valley”.
BooneJS··on What’s Left in the Apple Silicon Transition
Xeons have many, many PCIe lanes. Apple Silicon only needs enough HSIO for SSD and Thunderbolt ports, and they’ve released all of the non-internally-expandable machines already. They needed a chip that added 48+ PCIe lanes to the package so they could satisfy the relatively few Mac Pro customers.

And without external DRAM, they’ll never be able to provide as much memory as a low-end Intel chip in the Mac mini at the same price point. In-package DRAM is better performing but it changes the price/perf graph.

Apple simply optimized their silicon packages for 90% (or more?) of their users over the outliers.

BooneJS··on Should small Rust structs be passed by-copy or by-borrow? (2019)
Folks, processors continue to give smaller and smaller gains every year. Something has to give. If you have critical path code that absolutely must max out the core, then this type of analysis (as pedantic as it is) is useful in the long run.
BooneJS··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
I have a MY with FSD, and I do not trust it all. I don’t want to make excuses for the car, but if you’re paying attention then your car won’t scrub 35 mph and cause a pileup. My experience is I can hit the accelerator within 5-8 mph and the instant acceleration can recover. I don’t trust FSD, so therefore I can recover quickly.
BooneJS··on ‘My power’s low’: NASA’s Insight Mars lander prepares to sign off
Insight and its crew were awesome. I’m anthropomorphizing Insight as Wall-E, diligently fulfilling its mission even as disaster nears.
BooneJS··on Apple is struggling to build Mac Pro based on its own silicon
I presume dropping a few cores and replacing with PCIe lanes is what’s on tap. But man, the volume for that chip will be the smallest of any silicon, and the yield won’t be great.
BooneJS··on Reddit's photo albums broke due to Integer overflow of Signed Int32
Happened a few years ago to YouTube[0]. I don’t know why counters that start at zero and only increment are stored as signed integers.

BooneJS··on Tell HN: HP printers force you into agreement
Anyone recommend a decent color laser printer for home office? My spouse is a private violin teacher who runs a studio out of our home.
BooneJS··on Advent of Code 2022 is nigh
I’ve used AoC to dabble in new languages. This time I’m going to learn emacs instead. Vi/vim for over 20 years…

BooneJS··on Nascar driver stuns to qualify for championship with GameCube move
I played a lot of NASCAR 4 and Gran Prix Legends with a leather steering wheel. Great fun.
BooneJS··on Nascar driver stuns to qualify for championship with GameCube move
You could penalize it but if he had to do it on the next turn his sidewalls would have blown out. It’s definitely something to add to the end of race all-chips-in bag of tricks.
BooneJS··on Logseq: Privacy-First, Joyful Platform for Knowledge Management
A few hundred years ago it was common for folks (with the means) to keep commonplace books[0] to track information. What they did, what they read, etc. Outside of school & University, it's very uncommon for people to keep with this tradition. In fact, my son recently graduated HS and it was 10x more common for a teacher to hand out notes than it was for him to take notes, so even that's dying. I'm pretty sure you could deduce my kids' days based on Instagram more than anything.

I think if you assume a world where everyone keeps notes, then these just seem like systems for people that do not have one. But for those that have kept notes, these apps do offer some innovation over the plainest of plain text systems.

BooneJS··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the deep learning community embraced Julia yet?
I was in HPC for a long time - Fortran was and is still popular! It’s a virtuous cycle. Science students learn Fortean because it’s what their professors know. HPC has a lot of regular scientists, not computer scientists, doing their own research at huge scale.

Is it similar in ML?

BooneJS··on Home Heating Cost Comparison
Thanks. We're considering building our ideal home to live part-time and eventually retire to, and we'd like it to be free of natural gas. Obviously heating w/ natural gas is the norm up here, but induction cooktop, solar water heater, and a heat pump can replace that. The heat pump coupling is the high order bit I need to research. Ground is the pricy but default option.
BooneJS··on Home Heating Cost Comparison
I'm in Wisconsin, and we peak in 90's Fahrenheit with humidity in the summer and will have a week in February where we'll never get above 0F. I know geothermal works up here; we had it in a previous house but we paid (in 2012) $9600 just to have the 4 150 ft wells dug. What would air-source heat pumps look like up here? I've seen very few new homes in my area with them.
BooneJS··on American chestnut tree in Centreville is the 'holy grail' for conservationists
The Seek app by iNaturalist is one possible way for armchair conservationists to catalog the trees on their property.
BooneJS··on The end of Moore's Law forced YouTube to make its own video chip
We've already got them! They're integrated into the "System on Chip" or as chiplets on the package. Just considering Apple's M1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_M1

Because pure-software implementations of algorithms are too "expensive" in terms of power and/or latency, the M1 package has logic blocks that implements a GPU, a Neural Network processor, and H.264/H.265/VP9/JPEG/ProRes codecs. When Apple quotes battery life, the fine print says "1080P HD video with brightness set 8 clicks from bottom". Powering down most of the cores and lighting up just one of the codecs is clearly a good way to achieve 18 hours of battery life.

AMD and Nvidia sell GPU "co-processors" that plays games and has been used for machine learning in "GPU mode" (think games using "software rendering"), but Nvidia GPUs now have "Tensor Cores" to accelerate and decrease the electrical power required for some of the linear algebra functions common with ML. Laptop chips from Intel and AMD will have embedded video on package to eliminate an external GPU.

BooneJS··on Milwaukee Tool Raises the Bar with New USA Factory
I’ve met some Milwaukee engineers. They do a lot of computer simulation with commercial analysis tools in their design.
BooneJS··on Twitter's recruitment drive among federal agents
On the other hand, federal employees are not paid very well and live in a high-cost area. Some are true believers, making their country or the world better by being a public servant and will stay for 40 years. Many leave because they've made their contribution or checked that box and move on to get a job that can better put their kids through college.
BooneJS··on Alex Jones must pay $50m in punitive damages for Sandy Hook hoax claim
Defamation, Slander, etc. None are protected. Free speech protects you from the Government, not your fellow citizens.
BooneJS··on The CHIPS Act is popular, bipartisan, and a bad idea
The Bulwark is a Charlie Sykes internet media company. A hawk through and through, fighting with China apparently sits higher than regaining the lead in semiconductors.
BooneJS··on Time for Army Corps of Engineers to investigate moving water West?
I think we need a come-to-Jesus talk about almonds. The water required per nut is not sustainable.
BooneJS··on Time for Army Corps of Engineers to investigate moving water West?
What about desalination? Would that be more cost effective?

BooneJS··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
I’ve got one of these in 1Password that is shared with my wife. It’s a great idea.

When my mom passed away 18 years ago, we looked high and low for every paper and file to help my dad start to become competent with the household finances. It was a big challenge at an already challenging time.

BooneJS··on AMD-powered Frontier supercomputer breaks the exascale barrier
While AMD gets top billing for the compute cores, HPE used the acquired Cray Slingshot network to create this heterogeneous supercomputer. It has a 64-port, 12.8 Tb/s bandwidth switch, it scales to >250,000 host ports with maximum of 3 hops, and it uses Ethernet "plus optimized HPC functionality".
