Max out your 401K contributions or similar vehicle. Develop good spending habits. Don't try to keep up with those around you. Choose a career that really inspires you - not the most hyped today, or the highest paying. Choose something that gives you satisfaction, even if you make less money than your peers. It will pay off in the end. If you want a family, start thinking about it now. If you're in no hurry, wait until later to settle down and marry. Get your wild days behind you. I didn't settle down until my late 30s. My wife and I are now nearing 35 years. Bottom line, don't do anything now that you'll regret later. And possibly even more importantly, don't fail to do something now that you will regret later. Trust me, the things you didn't do will likely haunt you more than the things you did do. This is looking back from age 70+
I don't disagree with his new perspective. OTH, the cynical side of me thinks that the power requirements for AI/Microsoft may be playing into this new position.
No, I don't believe this will work. It's essentially a pyramid scheme. The Fed's fractional accounting system doesn't create new money. It increases the members lending power, i.e., more debt. The St. Louis Fed used to publish a good book on exactly how the Fed works. Might be worth a look.
I understand the motivation for re-opening the contract. However, who is going to do it faster than SpaceX? Certainly, Bezo and Blue Origin will go after the contract, but they are way behind SpaceX. And traditional NASA providers, e.g., Boeing, can't even get to the space station. So, I suspect this is simply a pressure move on Duffy's part.
When did tech become dominated by snowflakes? Any comments that aren’t blatantly critical of Trump are downvoted. Laughable, but sad. My generation was far more inclusive and tolerant than what I see here or in the media.
No, the US is not becoming autocratic. The media coverage is different because they are anti-Trump, but every administration has done "autocratic" things. Trump isn't unique, merely more bombastic and open about them. Obama, Biden, Clinton, both Bushs, etc. have all done things that we'd view as autocratic if we had been aware of them at the time. Quit worrying and enjoy life. The AI bubble should concern you more than Trump.
Of course they do. It’s a necessary evil. For most of us, it wasn’t fun to do, nor was it fun to be on the receiving end. I’ve been on both sides. In my experience, layoffs have usually occurred for good reasons, occasionally existential reasons. As for employees finding better jobs? Best of luck to them. Economic conditions and opportunities change. Take advantage of it.
I go the other direction. I use audio books to screen books that I actually want to spend time on (nonfiction). Typically, I run the audiobook at double speed. After completing the audiobook, I decide whether it’s worth the time and if so, I buy it. Otherwise, move on. The worst examples are those I can’t finish as audiobook, rare but it happens and usually points to an error in my prescreening.
And it only gets worse once you retire. In some cases, I go back to interests abandoned in the past, so I could pursue the almighty dollar. In reality, I use HN as a curator of things that might be interesting to read or study. Of late, the AI fad seems to have blotted out a lot of the subject diversity, though I only skim the first 120-150 “new” entries, though occasionally I use the search feature for specific subjects. I have uses several of the others like Stack Exchange, Quora, Reddit, et al, though I prefer HN unless I’m looking for a lot of opinions on specific topics, e.g. best textbook on subject X.
Very simple question, which I've not seen answered anywhere: with all the media options available to consumers today, why should US taxpayers be paying for any entity like the CPB? If they can't compete in the market, go out of business.
Europe doesn't dictate US policy. As for being aligned with Russia? It's Europe that is abandoning the foundations of Western Civilization, not the US. Further, the US has always been Europe's big brother that insured that no bad guys picked on them. It's time for Europe to grow up and defend itself or at least pay for what the US provides.
Nor has the US aligned with Russia. Choosing to stop wasting billions of dollars propping up a Ukrainian dictator is hardly aligning with Russia. The US should be auditing the money dumped in Ukraine.
Having not listened to the presentation, his content may be different. But, throughout my career this dichotomy has played out again and again. Coders learn the syntax of the language, usually at home and sometimes on the job. Maybe they built their own website as a teenager. They don't necessarily learn the paradigm related to the language. Frequently they apply the paradigm of another language to the new language (if any paradigm at all), e.g., their VB looks like 'c' or COBOL, their SQL is painful to read and worse to run. They wouldn't know a linked list or a btree if it bit them in the butt. And forget about DeMorgan or boolean logic. Reentrant, recursion, concurrency, stack, heap, coupling, cohesion,... Not happening here. But hey, they made the computer do what they wanted it to do. Just not well. Just not reliably. Just not sustainably. And certainly not maintainable. Programmers on the other hand, usually have an education that facilitates their coding. Yes, some learn it themselves and quite well. But, they learn more than the syntax of the language. They learn algorithms. They read - a lot. When I started decades ago, it was Dijkstra, Parnas, Yourdon, et al and others I've forgotten. I've been retired for a number of years and don't keep up with the languages, literature, etc. like I once did. But, guess what, the average coder doesn't either nor do many of the programmers. Part of the problem is that far too many people enter the industry without a realistic view of what the career entails, its difficulty, the effort expected, and so forth. They are chasing the money. Hence, a few years down the road, they are frustrated and dissatisfied and want a change. It's not for everyone anymore than becoming a doctor would be. This brings to mind the thread a couple of days ago about the "worst programmer". The correct answer, IMO, should always be yourself and you should be striving continuously to rectify that. Otherwise, maybe software isn't the right thing for you.
I like it as is. It harkens back to the era when content mattered , e.g. Usenet and the like, unlike the “modern” era when the websites are flashy and unusable. I would suggest that if this presentation isn’t acceptable, that perhaps it isn’t the information that matters most to you.
It’s not the job of the United States to police the world. The Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. It is not a strategic ally. It is a dictatorship. The US has been supplying money and equipment, much of which is unaccounted for. Without this aid, the war would have ended some time ago. Clearly, it is a proxy war. What is the US getting in return for all this money? Beyond making Zelenskyy very wealthy and kickbacks to various left wing politicians, e.g. the Bidens.
What is the fascination with the left? Collectivism is fundamentally evil. Equating leftism with egalitarian outcomes is naive at best. Cuba, the Soviet Union and others exemplify what happens when leftism triumphs - only the elites are well off. The rest suffer equally. If the democrat party wants to recover, move to the center. Otherwise, they’re done.
Much more honest and thorough mathematical analyzes were performed on the 2020 election, some by major academic organizations. They showed far more suspicious patterns than this. If Trump or his associates were going to "hack" the election, Clack County NV wouldn't be where they did it. That's the old Harry Reid machine. It would be conspicuous. Harris was a bad candidate. Her VP choice was worse. Her campaign skills were lacking. Democrats lost because they deserted the working class. I grew up in a union family that voted democrat. The current party no longer resembles that party. The republicans, at least under Trump, do. When Trump is gone, another Bush type could arise, and then again the middle class will be without a party. That's why Harris lost.
His net worth is more than $3 million. His homes are worth that much. You may claim that his declared net worth is $3 million. Citing Engels, the son of a wealthy textile manufacturer doesn't help your case either. History has repeatedly shown that socialism is a destructive form of government, beneficial only to the elites in the country and never the rest of the country. The US has become far too socialist in my 70 or so years. It's time to unwind it. And the last couple of weeks have been a good start.
When you cite an article by a very wealthy socialist, crying about oligarchy and a kleptocracy, you have no credibility from the outset. Further, I've yet to see anyone cite a Constitutional authorization for USAID. The US government is trillions in debt and spends massive amounts of our tax dollars on things for which there is no Constitutional authority. What is happening now isn't any of the things that folks here, in the media, and on the left are screaming. It's the exact opposite. And again, as history has shown, if Musk had been acting on behalf of democrats and had maintained the left wing Twitter echo chamber, he be hailed as the man that saved our "democracy". And BTW, the US is not and was never intended to be a democracy. It was founded as a republic though events have eroded that for more than a century.
Exactly. Too many here oppose eliminating the militant, left wing, anti-Americanism from the US government. Restoring it to a more rational and Constitutionally based framework is what's happening. It's not a coup. The government wastes and launders incredible sums of OUR money. Example, some $100B of the aid to the Ukraine is missing, if you believe Zelensky. In all likelihood, Zelendsky pocketed some of it and routed other to Biden and other affiliated NGO and back into the hands of the globalist faction. Resisting illegal immigration is likewise not a coup. It's the restoration of sovereignty and the rule of law. Nor is eliminating DEI/woke propaganda a coup. It is a restoration of common sense and science. Trump isn't the problem. The problem is all of the folks out here that are willing to surrender their lives to government and left wing utopian fantasies. They don't exist.
