It’s not the job of the United States to police the world. The Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. It is not a strategic ally. It is a dictatorship. The US has been supplying money and equipment, much of which is unaccounted for. Without this aid, the war would have ended some time ago. Clearly, it is a proxy war. What is the US getting in return for all this money? Beyond making Zelenskyy very wealthy and kickbacks to various left wing politicians, e.g. the Bidens.
