Blaaguuu··on Are women exiting engineering because men get the challenging assignments?
This study doesn't seem to be attempting to address the issue of a lack of women 'entering' engineering fields.. but the lack of women 'staying' in engineering fields long term.
Blaaguuu··on Google is bringing new ad types to AMP
Maybe it just catches the eye more, because it doesn't move with the rest of the content as you scroll. It's harder to just scroll past without noticing it...
Blaaguuu··on TeamViewer denies hack after PCs hijacked, PayPal accounts drained
I believe they were saying that they have 2FA on TeamViewer, not on PayPal.
Blaaguuu··on How Apple lost its way: Steve Jobs’ love of simplicity is gone
I only skimmed the article, but I didn't get the impression that the writer was suggesting that the changes are going to immediately result in Apple losing sales or loyal customers... They admit that Apple is still the best in the industry at providing simple solutions for their customers - just that they aren't as simple as they used to be, and there is a growing resentment of this in their loyal customer base, that could eventually bite them in the ass.
Blaaguuu··on Attack of the Ad Blockers
I believe it just said that ad-blockers will 'impact performance' - Which is technically correct... they didn't specify if it was negatively or positively ;)
Blaaguuu··on A Brain Dump of What I Worked on for Uncharted 4
I work at a medium-sized game studio, and we have a profit sharing system, but my understanding is that it is rare in the industry. We are essentially self-publishing, so that helps.
Blaaguuu··on Firefox Test Pilot
Huh... I'm on Chrome in Windows 10, and I have Google Analytics blocked, and the rest of the page loads fine for me.
Blaaguuu··on iPhone SE
That seems great in theory, but many people still have really restrictive data caps on their plans, so I'm not sure we are quite ready for that model.

It would also suck if you had an app on your phone like a star/constellation map, which you only use every once in a while when you are out in the middle of nowhere... To have your phone automatically delete that app, then try to re-download it when there isn't any way to do so would be a pretty awful experience.

Works well for something like the Apple TV - I don't think it's good for phones yet.

Blaaguuu··on Tim Sweeney: Microsoft wants to monopolise games development on PC
Interesting... That tweet is the first I ever heard of UWP apps being distributable through 3rd party stores, and I don't see anything in the link that he provided that supports his claim - its all in reference to the Windows Store.

It is interesting if true, but the devil is in the details, and Sweeney points out the similarities to Android, where you can technically side-load applications, but it is a pain in the ass, and I'm sure 99% of users couldn't be bothered to do so. Look at how much trouble Amazon has had getting people to use their app store on anything but 'Fire' devices.

Blaaguuu··on Tim Sweeney: Microsoft wants to monopolise games development on PC
I don't think that's correct either. My understanding is that the issue with DirectX 12 is that it is limited to Windows 10 - So people still on Windows 7/8 can't play DX12 games. AFAIK, you can use DX12 in non-UWP applications.
Blaaguuu··on Tim Sweeney: Microsoft wants to monopolise games development on PC
I don't know for sure, but my assumption would be that it currently isn't anything particularly interesting... Maybe things like sending updates to Windows 10's 'notification' drawer?
Blaaguuu··on Tim Sweeney: Microsoft wants to monopolise games development on PC
Windows is CURRENTLY a fairly open platform. UWP as a sort of sub-platform is not particularly 'open'. The point here is that if UWP is successful, Microsoft will almost certainly continue to move more and more in that direction, and Windows as a whole which quickly become much less open than it is today. Sweeney is trying to point that out before it is too late.

Currently you can buy most games on Steam, and there's really no reason to buy the UWP version if it is also available on the Windows store - but if Microsoft continues to add UWP only features to Windows, then it might not be long before we see games where the UWP version has features that makes it superior to the version available on Steam - or they aren't released on Steam at all.

I agree with Sweeney that that is a worrying prospect.

Blaaguuu··on DuckDuckGo ES6 Cheatsheet
I believe all of DDG's 'instant answer' systems are community created and maintained... https://duck.co/ia
Blaaguuu··on Twitter Sees 6% Increase in “Like” Activity After First Week of Hearts
I would assume that a good chunk of that initial increased activity has less to do with it being a better name/icon, and more to do with the increased awareness/attention to the feature in general, due to all of the press around the change... Will be more interesting to see the % of new users that make use of it after a few months.
Blaaguuu··on Didn’t Homejoy Shut Down?
I know that when I canceled my American Express card, they said that they would keep the account open for an X amount of time (I wanna say ~1 year), and I would be responsible for any charges during that period, and billed normally. However that was a case of canceling because I was just closing the account - not because of fraud... I assume they have different processes.
Blaaguuu··on Didn’t Homejoy Shut Down?
I don't think that rathboma was suggesting that you might get fraudulent changes on the card - but any other service that you use which currently has that card on record could now potentially be compromised by anyone who knows your name and has those 4 digits - many customer support systems only need that much to verify your identity and make changes to your account.
Blaaguuu··on ADP Drops Lawsuit Against Human Resources Startup Zenefits
Huh? I've been using ADP's online 'portal' for over 2 years - no idea how long it existed before then. Is there a specific part of the service that they expanded to be online this year?
Blaaguuu··on YouTube Will Remove Videos of Creators Who Don’t Sign Its Red Subscription Deal
This is the part that I don't understand - because I don't know what the language like 'YouTube Partner' means... I know of a lot of YouTube creators who monetize many of their videos with ads, but when they have small 'announcement' videos, and other videos which don't really contribute to the primary drive of their channel, they don't monetize them - does this mean those 'partners' have to go all-or-nothing, and either monetize all of their videos or none? Because that is what it sounds like, and what makes me upset.
Blaaguuu··on YouTube Red, a $9.99 Site-Wide Ad-Free Subscription with Play Music
This isn't the first time Youtube has dramatically changed their terms, and forced creators to basically accept them or leave, though... so it is pretty easy to assume the worst when it comes to Youtube.
Blaaguuu··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
So will they also force Apple and Google to sell FireTV on their stores? Amazon tries to look like the place where you can buy literally everything... but they aren't legally obligated to sell anything.
Blaaguuu··on Amazon Flex
Got some sources on the 'everyone getting richer' claim? I have never seen a single statistic suggesting that, after accounting for factors such as inflation... maybe I have some selection bias, but everything I have read shows that the middle class has gotten steadily poorer over the last 30 years or so.

Also, not every form of redistribution is automatically 'communist'... I don't see many people who advocate basic income also suggesting that we turn over means of production to the state - just raising some taxes, and trying to make the way that we redistribute wealth more simple/efficient.

I don't know enough about it to really argue either way, but your arguments don't make much sense to me without more context.

Blaaguuu··on Firefox for iOS Now Available for Preview in New Zealand
I imagine that would be in violation of Apple's rules around apps executing 'arbitrary' code from 3rd party sources.
Blaaguuu··on Amazon Underground
I generally agree, but it seems like it could have some bad side-effects if it becomes a popular business model, though.

There are a handful of interesting paid apps that are very short, unique experiences - which don't try to drag out the game to keep you playing it every day for months.

Its already getting harder and harder to actually sell/buy apps for money upfront, and this seems like it will make it even harder. And while I seem to be in a tiny minority of 'app' consumers, that is still my preferred method of obtaining new applications.

Blaaguuu··on July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded
I'm not a professional in this field, but my understanding has always been that most climate models have predicted that while the general trend in global temperature will continue to go up - in most individual smaller climates the seasons will tend to be more extreme in both directions, i.e. colder winters and warmer summers - in most places averaging out to warmer years.
Blaaguuu··on OnHub
Hopefully it doesn't turn into the TV market, where it is getting increasingly difficult to find a TV that isn't "Smart".
Blaaguuu··on The Story of Microsoft's Surface Hub
It looks to me like Microsoft is trying to position HoloLense to scratch that particular itch... They could potentially have experiences like the original Surface table, but using AR over a normal table, rather than an active table.

It would sure be weird to walk into a meeting room, and have everyone put on their AR goggles, but if it turns out to be really effective, it could be better than a Surface table in many ways.

Blaaguuu··on Microsoft Makes It Easier to Bring Android and iOS Apps to Windows 10
More likely it means Microsoft approached King privately, to have them work on the port in secret, so that Microsoft would have something to show off.
Blaaguuu··on Farm 432
That is a great idea... I've never tried eating bugs, and while I'd like to think that I could get over the stigma and try it, I know that I would have no problem eating them after they have been ground up into a meal, and worked into something tasty.

That said, I was about to buy a box just to check them out, when I saw their crustacean allergy warning... I hadn't even thought of that, and I am most certainly allergic to all of the crustaceans that Americans normally eat, so I might well be allergic to other arthropods.

Blaaguuu··on Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Released from Prison
I think the point is that 'not capable of digesting' is an inaccurate description of the issue. Most likely it would just take some time to integrate meat back into their diet... I've made much smaller changes to my diet which caused discomfort, but it lasted a week or two, and my body was fine with it. Likely this friend's transition would be more uncomfortable, and lengthy, but I can't imagine that if for some reason they HAD to eat meat again, their body would completely reject all meat indefinitely.
Blaaguuu··on Yogscast Kickstarter failure is a painful reminder of the risks of crowdfunding
I'm a little surprised this hasn't become an accepted practice yet... Tons of game developers fail to complete their projects for one reason or another, and the open-source scene for PC games is practically non-existent (actual games, not middle-ware). I wouldn't expect publishers to ever open-source unfinished games, but for indies that don't need to protect their IP, it seems like it would be a pretty great move to open-source your code and assets under a non-commercial license, if you can't complete a relatively mature project.

It seems to me that it would be beneficial to everyone involved... but maybe I am missing something.
