Blaaguuu··on BuzzFeed to Cut 15% of Its Workforce
From the article: "Verizon Media Group, the portfolio of media brands that includes Yahoo, AOL and The Huffington Post"
Blaaguuu··on Fortnite dev launches Epic Games Store that takes 12% of revenue
Tim Sweeney said in an interview that they are planning on launching their store on Android in 2019.

Blaaguuu··on “Stylish” browser extension steals all your internet history
A lot of people focus on how this information is used by advertisers, which can be a problem, but in my opinion the bigger issue is how data brokers are starting to act like completely unregulated and sometimes highly inaccurate credit reports.
Blaaguuu··on A coworker stole my spicy food, got sick, and is blaming me (2016)
This happens occasionally at my work, and I'm pretty sure it is always accidental - but it is because we get food delivered every day, and a combination of food not being very well labeled, orders getting messed up, and people forgetting what they ordered that day - things get mixed up.

That said, I really can't imagine any situation where it is reasonable if you are talking about people's homemade lunches, in a well labeled lunch box - as is the case in this story.

Blaaguuu··on Facebook Container for Firefox
IIRC, this was just one engineer's side project to take their existing container tech, which might be too 'advanced' for most users, and make a one-off addon that more users might be interested in.

Do you think that Mozilla's marketing of Firefox as more privacy focused is a bad thing?

Blaaguuu··on Making Sense of Super Smash Bros. Melee
I'm in the middle of reading a pretty interesting book, where that is one of the core arguments - Weapons of Math Destruction, by Cathy O'Neil - I recommend checking it out if you are curious to learn more about the distinction that you made, and more of how we tend to abuse math through algorithms that are in some way designed by humans.
Blaaguuu··on Mono for Unreal Engine
Previously you could only write code for the Unreal Engine with C++ or the visual scripting system, Blueprints. This allows people to use C# for everything that they would normally need C++ to add to their games - which will particularly help with people who are trying to transition from Unity to Unreal.
Blaaguuu··on Microsoft Paint to be killed off after 32 years
I've opened up the calculator a couple of times and gotten a prompt to rate/review it on the Windows Store... What is the purpose of doing that with built-in apps? It's just annoying.
Blaaguuu··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
I don't like any of the flavored versions... Cacao was way too sweet, Nectar tasted like drinking a bottle of Windex, and while I actually kinda liked the Coffeist version, it tasted more like chocolate than coffee to me, and my understanding is that there isn't any actual coffee in it, just artificial flavors... so I would rather have a cup of coffee with my normal Soylent in the morning.
Blaaguuu··on Root – Programmable bank account for software developers
How many 'virtual' cards can a user have?
Blaaguuu··on GIMP – 2016 in review
For me, it still mostly comes down to usability. A big part of it is probably that I just have more experience with Photoshop, and if I really forced myself to use The GIMP more, it might grow on me... But when I am working in Photoshop I always feel incredibly productive, where as whenever I have to use The GIMP, I feel like the interface is constantly fighting against me, trying to keep me from getting my work done.
Blaaguuu··on Amazon sells out of the NES Classic Edition in less than a minute
Who in the world wants these so badly? I'm excited to get one... but it's not like I'm in a huge rush to play 30 year old games... If I really wanted to play them right now, I could download an emulator.
Blaaguuu··on Trump Era Real-Time Hate Crime Mapper
Right now, I think the 'Trump Era' in this context is simply referring to this time in which assholes and bigots appear to feel emboldened by the perception that over 50% of America agrees with their hateful views.

(Probably an inaccurate perception, but that seems to be some people's takeaway)

Blaaguuu··on Trump Era Real-Time Hate Crime Mapper
It doesn't appear to be hooked up to a public database of hatecrimes, or anything like that (I don't imagine that exists). It seems to be 100% user reported, with no real proof required... just an optional link to social media where it was reported.

I don't see how this could actually be useful...

Blaaguuu··on Soylent Thinks It Found What Was Making People Sick: Algae
It's not a subject that I have done a ton of reading on, but from the many random articles that I have read over the years, it really seems like the bulk of nutritional science is still pretty much trial and error... Hence the new studies that seem to come out ever other month saying that eggs are good/bad for you... or coffee... or soy... or algae... or multi-vitamins... or gluten... or berries...

For something that affects us so deeply, it seems like we still know remarkably little about how food affects our bodies/minds. Any research that the Soylent folks do or read is helpful, but I wouldn't expect them to do a 5 year study and be able to suddenly say without a doubt that they have a the perfect formula.

Blaaguuu··on The real Soylent sickness
$2.69 per 400 kcal. bottle
Blaaguuu··on Apple Responds to Dash Controversy
I hope that's the case... It would make sense, since this doesn't appear to be an action Apple has taken on a regular basis.
Blaaguuu··on Apple Responds to Dash Controversy
That was my first thought as well... Even if in this case it was actually Dash putting up fake reviews, this seems like a slightly dangerous precedent to set.

It would be a big risk, but one could potentially buy 'false flag' reviews - throw some negative reviews on your own product, and positive reviews on your biggest competitor - It would hurt yourself in the short-term, but could pay off if you can get the competitor banned. Again, super risky, probably stupid strategy... But with the state of the 'app' market, I wouldn't be surprised if people would try it.

Blaaguuu··on Paper Planes
Basically, you just put a 'stamp' on a piece of digital paper, which shows what city you are in - then you 'fold' the paper into an airplane and make a little 'throwing' motion with your phone, being careful not to let go and fling your phone across the room, and the plane flies off. Then everyone can make a sweeping motion with your phone to catch other people's planes (seemingly random) to view the stamps, and add your own, then throw it back.
Blaaguuu··on Paper Planes
I suspect not... The first plane I threw pretty softy, because I wasn't sure how much force was necessary, and in a couple minutes it traveled from Washington State to Serbia.
Blaaguuu··on Paper Planes
Yeah, it took a good 4-5 minutes for it to start doing anything on my phone... Would be nice if there was some fallback for when it's loading, so I'm not just staring at a 'blank' screen, wondering if anything is happening.
Blaaguuu··on Paper Planes
Maybe it's just because the site is getting hammered, but whether I view it on my phone or computer, I just see a cool visualization of paper planes flying around the world, but I see no way to interact with it at all... Nor is there any explanation of what I am looking at. It looks pretty, but is rather confusing.
Blaaguuu··on How Safe Is Tesla Autopilot?
I think the argument against the term 'autopilot' is less about the technical accuracy, and more about the implication and assumptions of the layman. To most people, 'autopilot' suggest that they can be totally hands-off, which isn't true yet.
Blaaguuu··on Cortana: The spy in Windows 10
explorer.exe? /devils advocate
Blaaguuu··on Soylent Coffee: Nootropics, fat, carbs, protein
The closest that I have come across would probably be MealSquares - which still contain a good deal of animal products (milk, eggs) - but they seem to be going for a similar goal as Soylent, but making a 'solid' final product, and using whole ingredients. They last a good month in the fridge/freezer, and about 2 days on the counter. http://www.mealsquares.com/nutrition-facts.html
Blaaguuu··on Uber is Fucked
I had a hearty chuckle at the "It’s largely a solved problem." line. It does seem like in the next 5 years or so we'll be about 99% of the way to fully automated vehicles that can pick you up and take you anywhere a 'normal' car and driver can go... But that last 1% is a bunch of incredibly difficult problems that could easily take another 10-20 years.
Blaaguuu··on Nintendo re-releases NES as mini console
Can't stick my Game Genie in it, either...
Blaaguuu··on “Oculus removed the headset check from the DRM in Oculus Runtime 1.5”
I believe that it doesn't let you just plug in another Headset and use it with the official Oculus store - but it becomes pretty trivial for 3rd party 'hacks' like Revive to let you launch your Oculus games on an unsupported headset, rather than needing to go through a ton of trouble to circumvent the DRM.
Blaaguuu··on Where have all the iOS games gone?
But you often have to play the game for half an hour before you start running into really gross IAPs, though. If you want to find games that don't have those predatory game loops and IAPs, the only way seems to be to go outside of the app stores and find review sites - but no site can keep up with reviewing every game that gets released.
Blaaguuu··on Where have all the iOS games gone?
I'm guessing he is referring to the Xperia Play https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xperia_Play
