Admirer of all things, software developer by choice, electrical engineer by training, maker by nature. Father, cyclist, martial artist, lover of great entertainment. Years ago I could say I had tried just about everything once, sometimes twice. Now I am content to contemplate life in Atlanta.

BatFastard··on Do you know how much your computer can do in a second? (2015)
Indeed, once I realized the error of my train of thought!
BatFastard··on Do you know how much your computer can do in a second? (2015)
That is a really bad guess...
BatFastard··on Do you know how much your computer can do in a second? (2015)
As a game engine builder, you come to appreciate that your target speed to draw millions of polygons, calculate physics on hundreds of objects, render the UX, collect network traffic, send network traffic, compute pathing, and implement game logic, and everything else that needs to be done is 16 milliseconds max.

So I would guess in C++ you could make 240 million calculations in a second.

BatFastard··on 3M heads to trial in ‘existential’ $143B forever-chemicals litigation
The government did not know, but 3M knew. They made a choice not to burn it in order to save money.
BatFastard··on The Never Married, a New Normal
Marriage by nature is a two way relationship. After being married for 30 years, its got its share of challenges for sure, but its a big part of learning to be part of a true team, and less of an individual. Especially true with children, life's greatest journey. If a man does everything right he has no need to worry about getting divorced. Good luck on doing everything right! But even if your wife would choose that after your efforts, you will have learned enough to make another women VERY happy. They learn to live with a lot less then perfect!
BatFastard··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Impressive shots! Very nice project.
BatFastard··on The least impactful way to spend $300M?
Its better than spending 44 Billion on Twitter!
BatFastard··on NTSB: Cloud shot up vertically in front of plane before turbulence
Like a cloud created by a UAP?
BatFastard··on 72-year-old Congressman pursues a Master's in AI
As a 65 year old, I might argue that my mental faculties have changed, not necessarily lessened. I can't juggle 5 mental balls anymore, but I just write down what I need which is probably better.

I play poker with some 90 year old's, and they are damn sharp. Some people get dimmer with age, many continue to shine.

Getting a degree is a more traditional route, which older people tend to pursue. But he might be doing it for show partly since he is a politician.

Ideally it would be extruded diamond, but that technology will not be available until early in the 26th century. Second would be clear aluminum, but again that will not be available for another 150 years.
BatFastard··on Rust 2024 the Year of Everywhere?
I am relearning c++, much has changed in last 12 years!

I tried Rust, but when doing a data driven app, I found myself using unsafe way too much!

BatFastard··on Ask HN: Help me pick a front-end framework
Second the recommendation for Flutter, very robust dev environment.
BatFastard··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
I haven't coded anything in Unity in a few years, but I did, and others I know well did. They ran into the problem that Unity wants its resources to all be defined at compile time. A metaverse is totally data driven (at least should be), so Unity and a metaverse are not compatible.
BatFastard··on We're going to need a lot of solar panels
Indeed that NG that is burned adds to CO2, but its considered neutral since it was derived from atmospheric CO2. We still need sinks for CO2 that will be removed to atmosphere. But at least we can do it cost efficiently.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: Remote work credit? I built an app that the company thinks my boss built
Did you come up with the requirements and specs?

Did you do all the UX design?

Did you write the backend?

Did you do the QA testing? Did you get feedback from users and change the design based on their feedback?

If you did all of those things then you can say "I built it", if not, that you can say I was part of the team that built it. A major part perhaps, but a part.

BatFastard··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
First Texas would have to fight the other half of Texas, its not like whole states would just join a revolution.
BatFastard··on Half of Americans anticipate a U.S. civil war soon
I could see Christian Nationalists making waves, but those are 1% of society? Secular Progressives are non violent by creed(small joke), so I just don't see that happening. Poor vs rich? I see poor on all sides of the issue, hard to see that happening.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Adding to this, go for simple toys, wooden blocks are great. Legos are awesome for slightly older kids. Encourage them to be creative, one of my sons friends would buy Lego kits, build them, and put them on self. I say build it, break it, combine it, create it.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Boxes, my kids loved boxes! Often more than they toy that came in them. Plus brown boxes can be anything, encourage them draw on them, make fairy castles, forts, houses, spaceships. We took countless trips to the moon and planets with my kids in a box. Add in a few blankets and the possibilities are endless!
BatFastard··on The Composition over Inheritance Principle (2020)
>writeStringToWrappedSocket(s: WrappedSocket, s: str)

You use parameter s as both a WrappedSocket and as a str, minor detail for pseudo code.

BatFastard··on Show HN: Pathfinding Visualizer
Makes me wonder why anyone would use anything but A* or greedy algorithm. Fun to play with and watch!

BatFastard··on The end of the world is just beginning for shipping
I would imagine that this would first manifest itself in smaller countries. For example Mali employs the Wagner group out of Russia as a supplement for its Army. And I believe they are used by other countries as well.

I don't see nuclear-armed nations using private companies, but possibly being the source of troops and technology. Really I don't see U.S. citizens joining mercenary groups, quality of life is too good. I would imagine 2nd world nations like Russia, Iraq being the main source of these troops, backed by cheap advanced armaments from China.

BatFastard··on Nuclear is back on the table for a green future
poster added provision Nighttime energy.
BatFastard··on Ultrawide monitors are overrated, here's why I use a 4K TV instead
I am going the opposite direction, a more squarish monitor just came out from LG. Its awesome! I run one 30 inch monitor as main, and the Dual Up which is 26 wide by 28 tall as my code monitor to the side. So much better than my old 27 inch monitor in portrait orientation.

BatFastard··on The Publishing Industry
Started reading the book, quite interesting so far.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: How deep do you go?
Being a results merchant, I go only as deep as I need to in order to get results. If the result needs improving, then I have a target to go deeper into. This keeps me from investing in unused knowledge. I find its turtles all the way down, so just tackle what you need.
BatFastard··on Troof on Nootropics
It's the "must hunt" instinct cutting in on that third day. I loved day 3 of the fast! I fasted 3 days a week for months, loved it.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: Recommendation for high refresh rate, premium, non-gaming Monitor?
This seems to me to be the perfect programming monitor. https://www.lg.com/sg/consumer-monitors/lg-28mq780-b
