Admirer of all things, software developer by choice, electrical engineer by training, maker by nature. Father, cyclist, martial artist, lover of great entertainment. Years ago I could say I had tried just about everything once, sometimes twice. Now I am content to contemplate life in Atlanta.

BatFastard··on Factorio that you can touch
If ONLY I had know to buy 16 GB of VRam on my cards. I have 12, but they struggle.

Hell if I had know that a 5090 would be worth 6000 USD I would have brought as many of them as I could for 2000 USD!

BatFastard··on Factorio that you can touch
You think Factorio its self is bad? Try the Space Exploration mod! It expands the game with a ton of fun new problems.
BatFastard··on Claude Opus 5.5
I prefer Astra for creative uses, Fable seems better for hardcore coding.
BatFastard··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
True, but do you need a 10,000 dollar machine to do so?

I would love to find an excuse to buy a 10,000 dollar machine! But I cant find one yet. My current cloud bill is in excess of 400 USD per month. Just can't achieve frontier model capabilities locally.

BatFastard··on M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review
Anthropic is reporting 100 Billion ARR.

Even if you could get a frontier model, you would not be able to run it on any Mac. So speculating on what M7 or M9 will achieve in 5 years (if we even still exist) seems pointless.

>A more apples-to-apples comparison

Don't you mean an Apple to NVidea comparison?

BatFastard··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
I use an antagonistic agent to review and refute its findings, works great.
BatFastard··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
Read https://ai-2027.com/

This prediction has proven quite accurate so far.

Don't think anyone should panic, but people should be aware.

BatFastard··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
Has anyone read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_War:_A_Scenario

Sounds like there already exist some pretty crazy biological weapons in existence. I dont know if it will be 5 years or 20 years, but at some point some fanatic will try to kill the rest of us.

BatFastard··on Can AI design circuit boards yet?
And software engineers have a right solution? Guess again.
BatFastard··on iPhone Duo
I can't argue with that model, but in the past they actually did new and interesting things! The M series processor, the iPhone. Lets hope new CEO who is more of an engineer then the last one was ramps things up.
BatFastard··on iPhone Duo
Go Apple, bring up the rear!

Can they even do anything new?

BatFastard··on Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI
Wow, everyone should read this!
BatFastard··on Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI
The thing is... AI is not going to solve any problems. People needs to solve their problems. AI can give us clever solutions, but its up to us to do it!
BatFastard··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
I find Fable can solve in minute things that Opus struggles with. Of course Fable can struggle too.
BatFastard··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
I made the same choice, aside from privacy concerns, you can not locally host a cost competitive model.

But I am looking forward to lower hardware costs!

BatFastard··on Recovering Corrupt Zip Files
As the old saying goes, an untested backup is a non backup.
BatFastard··on Flock CEO's Address Spread Online as Surveillance Backlash Explodes
Question for me is "Will something you can do free now, be suspicious in the future?" Like voting, or taking your kids to a private school, or going to an EFF meeting?

As long as you feel fine having the government know absolutely everything you do, then keep supporting surveillance. I personally have nothing to fear, but I hate the idea that I am being surveilled by a private company.

BatFastard··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Its only been around for 50 years, but few people ever consider it.
BatFastard··on Webb Telescope Rules Out Two New Dyson Sphere Candidates
Does anyone know how many candidates there are?

Would we approach such a civilization?

BatFastard··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
What will be next in Trump's destruction of the American Economy?

So far he has driven away allies, put huge tariff on our most loyal allies. Driven away manufacturing by tariff policies. Driven away immigrants and academics. Pushed a last century oil based economy. Shown us how our exquisite weapon tech will fail (this might actually be good in the long run). Along with crippling our cybersecurity and state departments.

BatFastard··on Tim Curry has died
Brilliant artist! I smile when I hear his name.
BatFastard··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
My tests work, multiple agents confirm the code base. Code reviews pass.

I do very little actual reading of code anymore. Now I am more of a results merchant.

BatFastard··on Octopus intelligence may be related to never-before-seen mutation
I found the article very interesting. Not click bait at all.

I didn't realize that an octopuses brain was spread out all over its body.

BatFastard··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
10,000 LOC, hell my LLM can do that in a day!

Current project has over 60,000 LOC, I find using an antagonistic agent code and architecture reviews are really handy for keeping things grounded.

BatFastard··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
next year I PROMISE!
BatFastard··on Coding expertise is going to collapse from AI reliance
I would be interested in see that. I have reems of rules I use with Claude.
BatFastard··on How I find problems to solve as a staff engineer
Mostly agree, one small caveat. I always had a class of critical problems. They were rarely the important, but they were critical to things running smoothly.
