Admirer of all things, software developer by choice, electrical engineer by training, maker by nature. Father, cyclist, martial artist, lover of great entertainment. Years ago I could say I had tried just about everything once, sometimes twice. Now I am content to contemplate life in Atlanta.

BatFastard··on Are animals conscious? New research
But animals(dogs) were first to go into orbit!
BatFastard··on YouTube embeds ads into videos to beat ad blockers
Sadly YouTube has become a NO GO site. I am willing to watch an ad for a video I want to see, but so often with youtube content I dismiss the video within 5 seconds of it starting. I am not willing to watch 2 minutes of ads to find out if I want to watch the video in the first place.

What alternate sites are there?

BatFastard··on How David Bohm and Hugh Everett changed quantum theory
well, it would not be Billions of universes, it would basically be infinite number of universes popping up every second. Which while interesting, does not seem possible under any law of conservation of mass?
BatFastard··on Amazon Pharmacy
Shrink that we see writes one for 30 days at a time, but he write 3 of them.
BatFastard··on Keep Out – WebGL Game
cool, but stopped working as soon as I hit the shop entrance. Just black screen.
BatFastard··on Descent: A classic 3-D first-person shooter (2012)
Loved Descent, we used to play it for hours on the company lan, multiplayer was awesome!

They were are great early games. I kept one of my office mates transformed into a chicken in Hexen for hours, his cries of frustration still ring in my ears!

BatFastard··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
Any kind of usable GUI library. Plus I am doing 3d graphics, and rust is not there yet.
BatFastard··on If Inheritance is so bad, why does everyone use it?
Main reason I use c++ is because it has the most mature libraries.

I gave Rust a try, and lots of nice things about it. But many of its libraries are not very mature.

BatFastard··on How to Harvest Moisture from the Atmosphere

BatFastard··on Moto G Power packs wireless charging, 8GB RAM in a $300 phone
I have used Moto for my last 3 phones and they are great. Almost no bloatware, fast, good battery life. Only thing I would like is longer support for the phone OS.
BatFastard··on House passes bill to force TikTok sale from Chinese owner or ban the app
I don't think the founders could account for international influence in the age of the Internet and smart phones.

No one is asking for a great wall around the US. People are just asking that major influencers are not under the control of hostile governments.

BatFastard··on Killer drones pioneered in Ukraine are the weapons of the future
The U.S. has not been providing wonder weapons to Ukraine. It has been providing bullets, artillery shells, and Bradley fighting vehicles(which are pretty amazing, but are not new tech).

I would agree that the military like their new toys, like the f-35 fiasco.

BatFastard··on The 'Atlanta Magnet Man' is saving our car tires, one bike ride at a time
Street sweepers actually do pick up the debris, not just deposit it in the gutter. At least here in Atlanta they do.
BatFastard··on An 'education legend' has created an AI that will change your mind about AI
Interesting that they use a math problem on the home page, the one area it is not good at.
BatFastard··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
I had the same experience, twice as much for a heat pump as a traditional gas/electric AC here in Atlanta GA. Got quotes for multiple companies, then on a whim I talked to the guy at Costco who stands by the door on the way out. Turned out you get a ~15% discount for going thru Costco, so I saved the 1500 bucks and got Costco credit! And they used top of the line equipment!
BatFastard··on Ideal monitor rotation for programmers (2021)
I have a dual up from LG and it is the greatest coding monitor ever made!

In Intellij and VSCode, I can see project outline, 120 columns of code, and DB details all on the same screen. I use it as a side monitor, with main monitor being a Dell 32 inch 4k.

BatFastard··on Spaceship that mows the lawn
I hear he feels trapped, being a parent, and a responsible adult can do that to you.

However, I raised two children, spent hours reading to them every night, feeding them at 1 am so that they would sleep in until 7 am. But there were four glorious hours every night between putting them to bed, and going to sleep myself. During that time I developed side projects, read, and enjoyed myself. I suggest the author try to relish the time he does have, rather then feeling trapped.

BatFastard··on Ask HN: Should we plan for a life after HN?
In the mid 90s slashdot was the hot place. Just because most people had no idea how to get to a place called slash dot dot com! Lasted for a few years.

I agree it is community that makes a space. And HN has been holding on to their for quite a while now.

BatFastard··on Google Removes the Photo Sphere Mode from the Pixel 8 Camera
That is an impressive example.
BatFastard··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
I worked at Scientific Atlanta in the 90s, designing stealth radar systems. Some very cool tech they developed. They also did a lot of satellite comms. And a lot of telecom tech.
BatFastard··on My (Herb Sutter's) C++ Now 2023 talk is online: “A TypeScript for C++”
vcpkg? Its pretty handy. Not like cargo, but better then what existed before.
BatFastard··on This month is the planet’s hottest on record by far – and hottest in 120k years
Keep in mind global warming also makes winters colder.
BatFastard··on Dear Aliens
That was an awesome story! I think I had read it 40 years ago, but in an age where AGI is close to real.... its thought provoking.
BatFastard··on Important Coding Habits
Hm.. Interesting question. It felt like it one doctor pronounced it, others would follow suit, but I can see I was mistaken there.

However, it seems like there are two options, surgery, and physical therapy. Maybe I should have given the PT route a chance.

BatFastard··on The Fall of Stack Overflow
They were and are an excellent resource.

Is it inevitable that traffic would decrease as questions are answered? Has traffic gone somewhere else? Has AI replaced it?

BatFastard··on Important Coding Habits
Some chiropractors are amazing, most are questionable. I was in a motorcycle accident, one leg is now shorter than the other. I used to hike a lot, but back pain grew worse and worse. Went to an orthopedic doctor, he literally said "that is the price for walking on two legs", did nothing to help me.

Started going to chiropractors, since I could not sleep at night with out horrid back pain. After 10 different chiropractors, I finally found a good one. He practiced something call DNFT (directional non force therapy). No cracking of the back or neck. Just gentle pressure on different parts of my spine. Amazingly it worked wonders! I go back every 5 years or so for a tune up. Its black magic but it worked for me.

BatFastard··on Vacuum airship
Could you use a hybrid approach? Put hydrogen gas into a vacuum until the pressure the hydrogen exerted would offset the vacuum.
BatFastard··on The past is not true
This is a rip off of the story "Ed" told in the TV show "Northern Exposure", but it has always been one of my favorites from that show.
BatFastard··on DiaryLand is still going?
Why is this top of HN? Last news update was from 2020..
BatFastard··on There's still no silver bullet
GIT was based on previous version control system, PVC, SVN, etc. And it is probably more complicated to use than the older version were.

Git is possibly better at distributed teams.
