Alphasite_··on Radeon Instinct – Optimized Machine and Deep Learning
I wonder if something like AMD's SSD+GPU combo would improve the performance of this? Increasing the usable buffer size.
Alphasite_··on South Korea Passes Bill to Directly Punish Hack Makers
How is cheating an a professional game ('esport') not equivalent to financial fraud when cheating in an other professional game (physical sport) is?
Alphasite_··on An Intro to Integer Programming for Engineers: Simplified Bus Scheduling
I cant think of any serious constraint solvers without some sort of optimization support, are there any?
Alphasite_··on GNU Octave
I wonder if Octave would benefit from something like Graal, for some common JIT infrastructure.
Alphasite_··on An Intro to Integer Programming for Engineers: Simplified Bus Scheduling
Whats the distinction between Integer Programming and Constraint Programming? From a cutlery glance they appear to be the same solution to the same problem...
Alphasite_··on iRobot says robot vacuums now represent 20% of worldwide vacuum market
The newer ones allegedly dont do the random pattern thing anymore.
Alphasite_··on Latency numbers every programmer should know (2012)
Without having read the article I assume it is something to do with the asseociscativity and size of it?
Alphasite_··on All quiet in the IPv4 Internet?
BT already has a limited IPv6 rollout in progress[1], but the hardwares a big limiting factor (the early hubs definitely cannot manage it).

Alphasite_··on Mac OS X: Sane way to switch between windows
Not as of (about) 4 years ago.
Alphasite_··on Intel to buy deep-learning startup Nervana Systems for at least $350M
What's stopping them provinding a backend for tensorflow? But yes'm, it's obviously not a given.
Alphasite_··on Apple Said to Plan First Pro Laptop Overhaul in Years
I take back what I said, they do use the higher end variant of exactly that cpu: I7-4980HQ although it's probably aggressively clocked and or binned.
Alphasite_··on PEP 526: Variable declaration in Python
Currently they can force you to use a docstring with types, how is that any different?
Alphasite_··on AMP Is What HTML Should Have Been
If it loads quickly, why not? My connection is a sub 3ms ping to the nearby datacenters, what exactly is the bottleneck?

It's not to say there isn't a place for SPAs but I would argue many of these would be better suited to being full fledged desktop apps instead (better performance and snative integration).

Alphasite_··on PEP 526: Variable declaration in Python
What's wrong with optional typing? All it does is formalise docstrings into an integrated syntax.
Alphasite_··on Apple Said to Plan First Pro Laptop Overhaul in Years
Adaptors really are a stop gap. But yeah, in the short term its a pest.
Alphasite_··on Apple Said to Plan First Pro Laptop Overhaul in Years
No you don't [1]. You get within a (reasonable) margin of error of full performance (assuming there are no CPU bottlenecks).

Alphasite_··on Apple Said to Plan First Pro Laptop Overhaul in Years
That is a 47w CPU. That is way higher than the TDP of most laptops allows for (displays, discreet GPUs, etc). The 15" MBP only has an 85W charger, which must both charge the battery and power the laptop simultaneously, how is there room for this thirsty a CPU in a MBP style chassis?

Firefox is nowhere near as big an offender as chrome. Chromes absolute disregard for me frankly offends me.

Also, programs like IntelliJ do have low power mode, which does help significantly in my experience.

Alphasite_··on Apple says Australia's banks pose a security threat to iPhones
I don't live in the US, I mean in most developed economies contactless is fairly common place.
Alphasite_··on Intel to buy deep-learning startup Nervana Systems for at least $350M
Google's TPU claims to have a >10x perf/w advantage over GPUs (they state competitors, but GPUs are the defacto standard) and thats frankly more important that raw throughput at scale.

If Intel can ape Nvidia at deep learning then it is a big growth opportunity for them.

Alphasite_··on Intel to buy deep-learning startup Nervana Systems for at least $350M
Google has implemented their own deep learning chip with no CUDA support and its serving their purposes well. Why not another industry giant, Intel?
Alphasite_··on Apple says Australia's banks pose a security threat to iPhones
Honestly it's he same in most places but it's still convenient not to have to worry about your wallet.
Alphasite_··on Microsoft, Sony, and others still use illegal warranty-void-if-removed stickers
Chargers are the other thing, I've gotten way more replacements than I should have, pretty much no questions asked. Both in and out of warranty as its a design failure not a case of normal wear and tear.
Alphasite_··on Microsoft, Sony, and others still use illegal warranty-void-if-removed stickers
Ive had excellent support in the apple stores I've been to. Out of warranty support, people going out of their way to help, etc.

You example makes the point that formal English hard to write, not hard to read.
Alphasite_··on Israel Proves the Desalination Era Is Here
Solar is now significantly more economical than it once was and in the long term would be rather appropriate for these regions.
Alphasite_··on The 2016 Top Programming Languages
Apart from Xcode 4, its been a fairly incremental development for Xcode in my experience.
Alphasite_··on Facebook's really big plans for virtual reality
Most people do give the rift the edge, but it's not a huge difference on either side, for example the rift fits some people extremely well but those with glasses or wider faces tend to prefer the Vive. Image quality on the other hand is about tradeoffs and their value really depends on the game.

Other issues such as room scale vs seated/180 is yet another set of considerations and frankly, the Vive has the clear edge there even if you disagree as to its utility.

Alphasite_··on Facebook's really big plans for virtual reality
The 360, like the PS4, won because it was significantly cheaper than the competition. Its politics and other factors play a role but I would argue they are far less significant than price for a mass market adoption consideration (especially when the market is as price sensitive as it is (kids)).
Alphasite_··on Bringing ChakraCore to Linux and OS X
We also have Spidermonkey and JavascriptCore, nothing has changed.
