AlfaWolph··on Ask HN: How to learn about the history of computing?
This might be a bit broader but I enjoyed "How We Got Here" by Andy Kessler, which is available for free (emailed link[1] or direct[2] if you prefer. It's more about how the systems and engineering that predated computing influenced its development to where it is now. Actually it's argument is it's been computing all along since before we had vacuum tubes. Worth a read.

In addition, you can't gift things. There's been several occasions I've wanted to gift apps and games to people I know.
AlfaWolph··on Google Play Music – free, ad-supported radio
Linking Google accounts might but you're right it has high potential to get "Netflixed" with people sharing the service amongst their friends.

AlfaWolph··on Show HN: The first websynth that's 100% mappable to a MIDI controller
I thought Soundtrap [1] was able to accept MIDI input as well. Is the "100%" the distinction here?

AlfaWolph··on What Are Traffic Waves and Why Do They Happen So Much?
It's usually high density traffic and someone pulling a move like a forced merge which causes the person now behind them to slam on their brakes. I've seen this hyperactive "weaving" happen too many times to have it be explained only by "slow human reactions times".
AlfaWolph··on How Airbnb Rewrote Its Recruiting Playbook
That's the point in which I walk out. So disrespectful and shortsighted.
AlfaWolph··on Grepping logs is still terrible
He's referring to the universal format being text itself.

Unfortunately, we recently lost Ralph Faudree under terrible circumstances as well.

AlfaWolph··on Basic Personality Changes Linked to Unemployment
That's very kind of you to offer that to someone you don't immediately know. 'Felt compelled to tell you that since it made me smile.

The area of grass past the sidewalk is often part of the easement as well. That's where all the utility poles are set as it is.
AlfaWolph··on Private colleges are a waste of money for white, middle class kids
Given the conflicting data points, this question is ripe for some empirical research.

AlfaWolph··on Why I'm Returning My Kindle Fire
I refuse to go Android with another device until they implement hardware acceleration and improve the user experience. The staggering that occurs when scrolling and moving between applications is just plain unnatural and I have a mini-aneurysm every time it does it. Plus, the battery drainage is atrocious on the phone I have. That said, I haven't sprung for a tablet yet, so we'll see where both the iPad and the best Android offering compare when that times does eventually come.
AlfaWolph··on Why FSF Founder Richard Stallman is Wrong on Steve Jobs
Most people who've made an impact on society at any scale are free to have their legacy examined and criticized when they die. This can hopefully be done without criticizing the person behind the legacy. For instance, Hitchens wrote a scathing piece on the legacy of Reagan right after he passed. But people who make impacts on our world are often so married to their legacies that it is difficult to criticize that legacy without criticizing the person. Steve Jobs is one of those whose legacy is indistinguishable from himself partly because he led an intensely private life. From reading Stallman's comments, I found nothing that specifically mentioned the man, only his methods. I think that's perfectly okay. I can only guess that most people who find fault in his words are probably just caught up in the emotions produced from seeing one of the largest figures in our time move on in front of our eyes. So I've got to call RRW out on this. They posted this as the usual linkbait we're all accustomed to. (i.e. Manufactured outrage for attention.)
AlfaWolph··on Use Jonathan's card to buy yourself an iPad
The whole "Buying yuppies coffee will improve the world!" was obviously tongue in cheek. It's hard to believe some people don't see that.
AlfaWolph··on Use Jonathan's card to buy yourself an iPad
It was never meant to be an experiment about charity. It was meant to be an experiment about yuppies buying other yuppies coffee. That is it.
AlfaWolph··on Firefox 7 will use up to 50% less memory
We're on "Chrome 13" if that means anything. It shouldn't make a difference as long as major release numbers correspond to major improvements.
AlfaWolph··on New leukemia treatment "exceeded our wildest expectations"
Sounds like there is room for some creative approaches funded by entrepreneurs in this area just as has been happening in space exploration.
AlfaWolph··on A recipe for App Store profit: Take game idea from small devs iOS profit.
Why didn't the original developer make his own iOS version? Can he really complain?
AlfaWolph··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Forgive me if this rubbed you the wrong way. I could've worded the title better. FWIW, no one (at least not me) is questioning the good intentions behind this even if it was planned. I just thought it was a cool idea, viral campaign or not.
AlfaWolph··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Someone within the last 24 hours went in and deleted Google cache though..
AlfaWolph··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Well if the professional connection really is just a coincidence, I regret the wording of the title. But do notice I stated as I posted this that I don't think this is wrong on any level really even if it were a manufactured campaign. Again, it's a cool story and very clever either way and I could see Occam's Razor going both ways on this.

pg- Feel free to edit the title if you want.

AlfaWolph··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
..which I don't think takes anything away from it. It was still clever in implementation, concept, and now we can just add viral campaign to the list.

Also, I think it's worth pointing out that the people at Metafilter were on it from the start. I don't know if that says anything about liberal arts and social science types being more cynical and skeptical or if the science and technical crowd types here are just easily entranced by the technical implementation of something and don't see the forest for the trees. It's probably both.

AlfaWolph··on Games company claims their graphics are 100,000x better
I thought it was interesting that they predicted some sort forthcoming schism between 'real' scene objects and 'artificial' ones. At first I thought he was talking about the characters and scenes of residing on one side of the uncanny valley or the other, which I think is a valid thought. But he wasn't talking about that at all and posited instead that objects will either be scanned in from the real world and placed in game vs assets created by artists. I don't think this will be the case except in games that strive for realism. It will be more like Photoshop, where real scanned in assets still require artists to perfect and stylize them for your game. Until high resolution, tactile VR arrives, you're still running into 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe'.
AlfaWolph··on Full Screen Google Task
I haven't used it much but I know Producteev is also geared for teams and lets you assign tasks to others.

AlfaWolph··on Sendoid (YC W11): Finally, Sharing Big Files Isn’t A Huge Pain
Not very useful as only 50MB is too close to what one can send via Gmail. Anything larger than that I've been using http://www.streamfile.com (150MB, which beats all of you. And it was created by an HN'er before it sold, I think).

I just miss my drop.io.
