AlexMax··on The Simple Proof of the Tetris Lamp
> 1) Why limit yourself to 4x7? The 1988 NES version of Tetris is 10 units wide.

Presumably, the objective is to arrange the tetriminos into a pleasing rectangle shape. Unfortunately, the factors of 28 are 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28, so 4x7 is the closest you can get to a square, and 2x14 has a similar problem of having the same number of 'white' squares as 'black' squares. The closest one can get is 5x6 with two holes removed.

That's actually even more distressing. You want stability out of a currency, not wild swings.
AlexMax··on Behind OS X’s modern face lies an aging collection of Unix tools
The FSF prioritizes user freedom over programmer freedom. Neither one of them is "True freedom".
AlexMax··on Behind OS X’s modern face lies an aging collection of Unix tools
> So yes, GPL 3 is hurting open source more than helping it.

Why is it bad for the FSF to prioritize their interests ahead of Apple and Microsoft's?

AlexMax··on The Satoshi Nakamoto SourceForge account has been hacked
The original buttcoiners seem to have moved on to http://reddit.com/r/buttcoin

The buttcoiners seem to make light of the BFL purchase, since in their mind, the former owner has done something that many Bitcoin investors have not - made a profit off of Bitcoin.

AlexMax··on ITerm2 2.0
For me it used to be two reasons:

* 256-color support. This was added in Lion I believe.

* There's a really weird bug with word-wrapping that only manifests itself in Terminal.app: http://superuser.com/q/46948/5966 As of 10.9, I believe it remains unfixed.

AlexMax··on Are Uber and Lyft responsible for reducing DUIs?
The cabs I've used in the last few years have all had credit card swipers in the car. I figured this would be a universal feature of any moderately populated cities' cab system in 2014.
AlexMax··on CentOS 7 potential release
It's quite sad, in my opinion, that this is halfway down the page while yet another beating of the dead horse that is the systemd flam^H^H^H^H discussion is the most visible comment thread. Thank you for posting this.
AlexMax··on Mario Maker: Create Your Own Super Mario Levels
There has been an unofficial tool for editing Super Mario World levels available for many years now.

http://www.smwiki.net/wiki/Lunar_Magic

I wonder how Mario Maker will compare in functionality and ease of use.

AlexMax··on Email Self-Defense – a guide to fighting surveillance with GnuPG
If you're using a Mac, the excellent MailMate mail client supports GnuPG natively.

http://manual.mailmate-app.com/preferences#openpgp_and_smime

I can't speak to any shortcomings in its PGP support, as it's not something I personally use, but I've been using it as a MacMail/Thunderbird replacement since last September and have been quite satisfied.

AlexMax··on Atom Is Now Open Source
I paid for Sublime Text, and there were enough rough edges and bits I didn't like about both vim and Emacs that I felt justified in paying for it, but nevertheless seeing development slow to an absolute crawl on a product I paid for makes me nervous.
AlexMax··on Apple Claims Mogenerator's Methods
> Responding with the same tactics seems fair.

So you are going to combat the network effects that would establish monopoly control over how people share code by...trying to establish monopoly control over how people share code? Doesn't that seem a wee bit hypocritical to you?

AlexMax··on The Hypocrisy Of Sam Yagan and OkCupid
> Come back when you can intelligently make an argument that is internally consistent. I have to agree with the others commenting on your posts, you have some serious cognitive dissonance.

Could it be that you've managed to ferret out hypocrisy in their mental model in just a few short minutes?

Or are you (and others) just straw-manning their position to be "Discrimination is bad no matter what!" so you can tear it down easily? I hope you yourself don't subscribe to that mental model, because it's not only overly-reductive, but like you said, it actually just plain doesn't work - neither in favor of the status quo or for changing it.

AlexMax··on The Hypocrisy Of Sam Yagan and OkCupid
> I think the issue is that as long as the state endows rights to religious practice (marriage) there is a problem.

Legal marriage and religious marriage are already not the same thing. That was the entire point of my statement - that legally, it didn't matter what the state called it because it is a separate institution. You can get legally married without a religious ceremony.

AlexMax··on The Hypocrisy Of Sam Yagan and OkCupid
Sorry, but I find it incredulous that the only reason that some folks are unwilling to give LGBT folks the right to marry is because of what the state happens to call the practice.

AlexMax··on Obama DOJ’s New Abuse of State-Secrets Privilege Revealed
> The choice between "big government" and "big business" is a false dichotomy, if that's what you're getting at.

What is the third choice? Anarchy? What if I prefer not to be dragged out of my house and beaten to death by a mob?

AlexMax··on Obama DOJ’s New Abuse of State-Secrets Privilege Revealed
> And no, you're not allowed to disrupt the government.

AlexMax··on Why I can’t call myself a gamer anymore
> Having grown up as a gay teenager in the 90s, I don't really remember having had my bones broken by any jokes people made about me. I did get my ass kicked pretty good a few times, but in those cases, it wasn't words doing the damage.

Do you not think that words contributed to the atmosphere of oppression that made it easier for others to stand by and do nothing or think you deserved it somehow? Or that it doesn't have the effect of tearing someone down mentally? If someone is hurt by the things someone says, is it the victim's fault for letting it get to them?

Why can't people just be nice to each other? Why can't we just start from that? Why can't we as a society frown on that sort of bullying behavior instead of insisting that it's the victims who should take two "life experience" pills and get over it?

AlexMax··on California Arrests the Owner of a Revenge Porn Site
> And if you think that is wrong, then tell insurance companies and courts about limiting damage. "Was you car locked where you left it before it got stolen, sir?"

"Rape Shield" laws are fairly common in the United States and elsewhere which prevents cross-examining rape victims about their past sexual history or submitting such things as evidence at trial.

This is done precisely to combat victim blaming and is much more relevant than your hypothetical "unlocked car" metaphor.

AlexMax··on FreeBSD 10.0-RC1 now available
> It is especially appealing as a non-linux opensource project with a BSD (non GPL) license that is fairly well maintained. The Non-GPL license means that a company can use FreeBSD in a closed-source project.

How much of a one way street does this turn out to be for FreeBSD? I've always worried about BSD projects being left hung out to dry because companies have less of an obligation to contribute to the parent project compared to something like Linux, but I'd be interested to see how it works out in practice.

I do remember reading some depressing things about contributions to OpenSSH (a quick google search returns "OpenSSH has no wealthy sponsors, nor a business model. In fact, no Commercial Unix or Linux vendor has ever given our project a cent."), but perhaps FreeBSD is different in that aspect.

AlexMax··on Doom released 20 years ago today
Doom Touch is very well done port of prBoom+ to Android:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beloko.doo...

It's capable of playing the original trilogy as well as many classic levels and level-sets that are marked as doom2.exe, limit-removing, and BOOM compatible.

AlexMax··on YouTube Addresses Massive Spam Problem Following Rollout of Google+ Commenting
> It's like a cellphone that you cant call anyone with. No one really cares if it's 1000 times easier to use if you can't call your friends.

And now you know why they're unifying their account system under Google+. Being able to include everyone who has ever had a YouTube or GMail account in their social network means that suddenly, people you know _are_ on Google+.

This is nothing new. This is basically the sequel to the YouTube -> Google Account transition that happened a few years ago, except this time it's in a post Google Reader shutdown world so Google is no longer the darling of Hacker News and Reddit commenters.

AlexMax··on What 4chan thinks of HN
> Basically, if I can get you to react with misogyny, I have a level of control over you.

The solution is not to innoculate yourself against emotional response. Trust, but verify. Be emotional and empathetic, but do your homework and don't be a sucker.

Such an approach would allow yourself to empathize with the targets of bigotry without exposing yourself to the hypothetical psychopathic affirmative action boogeyman. And I am far more afraid of decades of social justice being undone by the normalization of bigoted attitudes in society than I am of a few scheming manipulative social justice warriors.

AlexMax··on What 4chan thinks of HN
> Being susceptible and unwilling to accept it makes you manipulatable. If one person cracking watermelon jokes gets under your skin, think what a psychopath with an end game pounding the drum of affirmative action can do.

I'm afraid I'm not following your logic. Care to explain further?

AlexMax··on What 4chan thinks of HN
> It seems to me that the people that take issue with bigotry are themselves somehow weak through some kind of insecurity manifesting itself as a desire to fix this perceived "injustice". Because, you know, muh feels.

Being empathetic is a weakness?
