Agustus··on Jack in the Box CEO reconsiders automation, kiosks
Entry level worker who is not valued the fluctuating livable wage level; where they do not have basic work skills. In San Fransciso, a livable wage might be around $50,000 ($12k for housing, 20k for all taxes, $8k for food and other housing necessities, and 10k for savings, clothes, or insurance); this basically means an hourly wage of $25/hr. As an entry level job this is not a good option for employers and thus why they turn to automation, they know the robots skill and value, but estimating if an entry person can meet these skills is nigh impossible.

The other end is that someone is able to underbid you for your time. Which means you can believe you are worth $25/hr, but get no jobs because Jim Burnett will do it for $24 or someone in a lower livable wage area will do it for $5. In this case, you will have no work based on your theory.

That is not a quote, that is a paraphrasing of whatever the original statement was.
Agustus··on Higher Education Erodes
A test is an evaluation of knowledge leveraged or gained. If the test is seeing a significant number of failures, then it is indicates that instruction is not aligning with the evaluation metric. Students should be measured and addressed according to each individual's aptitude; there is no reason for our goal to be 100% students going to college. 100% going to college means the colleges have lowered their standards.

The current situation is that the public school system (K-12) has one goal: College bound. There is no method while in this system to adapt a student to a trade. Germany does a good job of telling students that they are not college material and then having a non shamed option to pursue (trade or apprenticeships). In America, someone saying they are without a college degree is shamed or looked down upon; unless they are an entrepreneur who makes it big.

Betsy deVos can upset the status quo because in the last twenty years have you seen a change in the education system that would address the individuals who are not college material? Is there a program in place that can upend the crazy bureaucracy that currently exists maintaining the aforementioned binary outcome from K-12.

As an aside, the federal government's education programs create compliance structures that increase rent seeking systems that increase the bureaucratic overhead. An example of this is to look at the increase in administrative personnel at a university for the past twenty years. Most colleges have a tooth to tail ratio increase, high schools have seen administrative bloat significantly increase to take advantage of the grants available.

Agustus··on First Amendment in Peril?
Who judges the intolerant?

What intolerance gets you lumped into those you profess to want to starve to death by denying employment or means to a wage?

Easy to put supremacists in, but then if a person makes a comment at Evergreen, they are now in the racist group and can now be destroyed.

The ability of a programmer to take advantage of an effect specifically found only on a quirk in hardware is an art skill that may be going the way of the dodo bird. Not having to port a game between varying resolutions like this article mentions means you can play visual tricks. The article demonstrates the curtain being revealed in the last comparison of Kirby games.

What active work do the automotive companies do to discourage rail?

The light and high speed rail companies put on a very good dog and pony show to representatives. They shower them with money, explain the economic incentives and all sorts of other items. The government will then actively try to sell it to the tax base. Any person speaking out against it is called as a Luddite or sponsored by the oil industry (although these are contrived, as they are actually representatives of a economic think tank). The head winds for rail is always heavily supported by a directly benefiting industry. So, I am genuinely interested in your source for the automotive statement you made. Also, please do not use l up the unproven "conspiracy" from prior to world war 2.

Agustus··on Barney Frank: here's how to not waste your time pressuring lawmakers
I asked because I am trying to gauge the user experience that he/she had in calling their representatives versus mine. Mine spent a considerable amount of time with me and asked my zip code. For the representatives aide to not ask for any identifying information led to my asking the area code question, the person receiving the call may have used it as a crib to put them as within the representatives area.
Agustus··on Barney Frank: here's how to not waste your time pressuring lawmakers
When you made your phone calls, did you call from a phone in the area code they represented? Did they ask for your zip code?
Agustus··on Barney Frank: here's how to not waste your time pressuring lawmakers
#5 is great and should be amended to include understanding what interests the representative has in taking a particular stand.

Barney Frank is the same guy who was actively fighting (1) against George W. Bush's initiative to tighten up lending requirements ahead of the Great Recession; Barney Frank was against it due in part to then boyfriend, who he helped get a job, being on the executive committee (2). Getting him to change his opinion would have been night impossible.

Agustus··on Thousands of deadly U.S. military airstrikes have gone unreported
Accidents do not make terrorists.

In the Iranian Air Flight incident, a gung-ho boat captain could not get a positive identification after being fired upon. There was no terroristic intent. Bad judgment, but not to the point where the captain intentionally fired upon a commercial aircraft. As for your comment about media notes, the Wikipedia article has a lot of notes.

The 1940's through 1960's actions of the military were in a period of United States of America's mercantilism that was fighting against a sea of red dominoes that were showing up daily. Does this make it right, one cannot say based on the information available at the time.

The fog of war is not easy and that is why the United States of America from the 80's on is so great, we have actively tried to be a better nation. I want to read about this stuff and see that after the cruiser incident happened, there was an investigation and a new approach put in place.

Agustus··on Scientists Are Planning to Run for Office
What can a scientist do that no other person can at a macro-level?

On minimum wage, there are scientists who have two schools of thoughts:

a. Minimum wage can be increased without negative impact to individuals b. Minimum wage is a horrible action that harkens back to racist unions trying to keep black people out of jobs and has unseen consequences in a labor market.

In this instance, the answer from the 314 Action group is that those scientists that agree with Democrat policies are more equal to others.

Another example of this would be in the realm of climate change modeling. Let's say we have two climate models that utilize carbon dioxide as an input. Model A uses less of a feedback loop than Model B, resulting in less global average increase in temperature. Both were put together by top scientists, there is just an existing dispute in the scientific community as to the amount of feedback that can occur. Will these scientist politicians be able to allocate resources any better than a politician? If according to the Atlantic, the next five years is the time to act, will there be time to set up a committee to review the differences and make recommendations?

Agustus··on Show HN: Mest – Place to talk with those you disagree with
How do you take into account nuances. When President Obama was riding shotgun on the ACA passage he disregarded the opinions of the opposition with phrases like "No one has shown me any other alternatives," and "I won." When the ACA was finally passed, the opposition pointed out the flaws that are now occurring. Where in this entire process, even from the start was there any engagement.

I am actively asking what engagement programs or outreaches have been attempted. The only thing I can point to is the ever changing nature of our nation's acceptance of gays and lesbian marriage. Senator's Clinton and Obama both were against it until after the populace pointed out how much they were for it.

A thought experiment: Minimum wage. It is a horrible program that directly hurts the poor and downtrodden; it was first imposed by actual racists to keep blacks out of work[1], [2]. Now, based on its origination, is it a racist program to keep poor and downtrodden out of work or is it a racist program to eliminate the minimum wage? Who is the arbiter of this decision?

Agustus··on Data and Machine Learning to Get Out the Vote
"The VoteWithMe app provides you with the top 10 contacts from your address book who we're worried won't turn out to vote."

Earlier in the line it is: "based on the likelihood that they support progressive candidates"

So, we have a group claiming to be civic minded, but will only encourage the "correct" individuals in your phone book to vote; those individuals who are not supporting the correct candidates, we will not encourage them to vote.

These guys probably have access to the Obama Path to Victory database or something similar and are using this to engage contacts through direct interaction.

Agustus··on How Florida's electricity utilities are manipulating voters to oppose solar
There needs to be a website that says who is backing an amendment, really. Additionally, the website should explain the issues of it and why each side is proposing it.

I agree with the power companies in that the payment of the grid switch is $15,000 and should be borne by the homeowner. If you are forcing your neighbor to subsidize your solar power installation and subsequent reduction in costs through higher costs for those without solar, when the power company installs the switch on everyone's house they will be bankrupt. Yes, it would be nice if the solar power could be reduced in cost, but forcing others to bear the burden does not seem fair, especially if you are unable to make the initial investment for solar.

Agustus··on How Silicon Valley Treats a Trump Backer: Peter Thiel
Did you vote for President Obama when he was against gay marriage in 2008? According to your argument, you should say no, but here begins the failings of your moral signaling. Did you stand up to him or justify your vote with: He does not mean it or he was not a Republican?

Are you going to vote for Hillary, who has said she was against gay marriage as recent as 2012. According to your hero plan, you should not have anything to do with her, ever.

Agustus··on Twitter fired its VR manager because of something he posted to Facebook in 2013
Absolutely not. You are not allowed to fire someone based on their political beliefs, especially in California. You are forced to accept people in society regardless of your personal beliefs.

Also, plenty of people is a vague term, they are less than 50% of the democratic party to put Clinton and Sanders as their representatives. The soldier who also ran was what was left of the old "liberal" party. He echoed the sentiments of 1990's Bill Clinton and he was left behind with nary a backer.

Agustus··on What If Urban Sprawl Is the Only Realistic Way to Create Affordable Cities?
Eminent domain can only be used in cases of public use. Skyscrapers not being built by government functions are never a good idea. So, you cannot use eminent domain for developer acquisition.

Trains do not get a lot of eminent domain help, instead their is a lot of work to build within existing right of ways.

Agustus··on The battle between Tesla and your neighborhood car dealership
I cannot wait until the day I do not have to step into a car dealer and deal with the slimiest of the slime and feel of taken advantage of.

I was for Chris Christie until he gave in to the lobbying of the car dealers and stopped Tesla from selling directly to the customer. The front end aggrandizing is great, but when you have the choice to help the consumer and you whiff, say good bye to support from me.

Agustus··on Mapping Traffic Fatalities
I am struggling with what will be the purpose of this. Any project that I work on with traffic analysis, PD&E, or roadway design includes a crash analysis.

The crash analysis includes an analysis of every accident within a five year period, identification of high crash locations and what caused the crash (high speed, inebriation, or a list of other options), and then what strategies can be adopted for the most impact in a benefit/cost analysis.

Just looking at heat maps of crashes without inclusion of traffic volumes (one crash per million miles is nothing compared to an area of one crash per thousand miles traveled) becomes meaningless.

Agustus··on BleachBit “stifles investigation” of Hillary Clinton
Absolutely not.

I would love to see how this would be interpreted if the cronyism was not in place within the media and the executive branch.

Imagine how much uproar there would be within the SEC if you admitted to deleting all of the evidence, you would get Madoff type cover-up coupled with Mylan EpiPen disgust.

Agustus··on Google Fiber reduces staff by 50%
What did Google miss in attempting to drive the Fiber program.

Reading some of the executives from other companies, they were surprised by their price points after installation. Frontier / Verizon FiOS had just gone through a country wide installation, was there no one to poach for knowledge?

Or was it another play by Google to get some sort of bureaucratic favor or other item.
