AdamGibbins··on Show HN: `fzf` * `Git` done right
The doc seems to imply if I have delta installed, it will just automatically use it. But that doesn't seem to be the case, git fuzzy log output looks the same with and without? I have my git pager set to use delta, so I know it works.
AdamGibbins··on Tools for Better Thinking
For as long as Mac's have existed? Some developers prefer to focus on one ecosystem, Omni Group for example.
AdamGibbins··on Simple Personal Finance Tracking with GnuCash
Have you tried fava recently? A web interface for beancount. Its become very powerful in the past year or so, allows editing etc too.
AdamGibbins··on New 13-inch MacBook Pro
Droidcam doesn't exist for MacOS?
AdamGibbins··on Ubuntu 18.04 vs. 20.04 LTS Performance Preview
Does it only support ecdsa? Surprised they don't use ed25519 in their example.

Edit: nope, seems ed25519 supported too https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/en/man1/ssh-keyge... although internet seems to suggest hardware support is far more limited. Tried generating one on MacOS and indeed my Yubikey seems unsupported.

AdamGibbins··on British Rail’s short experiment with travelling pubs
> In short, if you can pay by Oyster - your can't drink and ride.

This is wrong. You can pay with an Oyster for Thameslink services out of and through London for example and drink on those. It literally only applies to Tfl operated services.

AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
Alfred has a clipboard manager built in, what does Paste offer over it that justifies its fee for you?
AdamGibbins··on Jitsi Meet Electron 2.0
It wasn't anything like the original Slack app last I used it a few months back. Has this changed? It doesn't have a keyboard shortcut to jump between unread channels as a basic example. Or hiding read channels, so I've got a huuuge list.
AdamGibbins··on Mosh
mosh does persistence better, if you're connected to tmux over SSH it'll still disconnect as your IP changes on a roaming connection (like it does on my daily commute on the train). mosh does not, it stays no matter what. Also no need for autossh or similar to reconnect when you unsuspend your computer.
AdamGibbins··on Kind - run local Kubernetes clusters using Docker
Be warned, Kind is incredibly heavy weight. It wants over 8GB on my laptop just to start, and pins cores for 10 minutes.
AdamGibbins··on Hard Drive Stats for 2019
> So basically dont buy Seagate.

Or do, because they're cheaper than the competition and modern systems can handle failures.

AdamGibbins··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Note this line in the link you just posted:

> It's worth pointing out that this scheme is not currently in place

AdamGibbins··on N26 will be leaving the UK
Revolut are not a bank, they're not operating as one and are not regulated as one, so do not get FSCS protection. They hold a banking license with Lithuania, however are not actually issuing accounts under it - and if you read about Lithuania's banking system its all rather Iceland like and I don't have high confidence in it.

I would not store my money with them.

AdamGibbins··on Linode launches free DDoS protection
The security issue and its appalling handling was not trivial, it'll take a long time to regain that trust. DO is more widely used nowadays, which has resulted in a larger community utilising the API integrations etc. DOs managed Kubernetes etc are also much more stable (or at least claim to be, Linodes are still in beta).
AdamGibbins··on Analysis of compensation, level, and experience details of 19k tech workers
I don't know, I've never worked in the US. OP seems to imply you do?
AdamGibbins··on Analysis of compensation, level, and experience details of 19k tech workers
> but the convention in the UK is to report pre-tax salaries.

This isn't 100% true, you never see the employers side of national insurance for example.

AdamGibbins··on Things and Stuff of 2019
Well that's embarrassing, that's what I get for HNing at 3am ;)
AdamGibbins··on Things and Stuff of 2019
105 books?! That's some impressive dedication.
AdamGibbins··on The First Credit Card Ever (2016)
That's not entirely true, its written in UK law that you get better protections with a credit card - see Section 75 protection. You'd be pretty foolish to use cash for large expenses due to this.
AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: What is your financial “setup”?
Yodlee works internationally. There's also Salt Edge that works across Europe, not sure about elsewhere.
AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: What is your financial “setup”?
There are already plenty of providers (at least in the UK) that offer the APIs YNAB need - yet for some reason they've opted to use two obscure North America only aggregators. Salt Edge and Yodlee are two very heavily used providers that work internationally.
AdamGibbins··on You Suck at Excel (2015) [video]
Doesn't look to be the one, its analysing eBay in Excel, he navigates Excel well but its in no way a tutorial, there's no description to how he's doing anything. Nor is it particularly advanced.

AdamGibbins··on KeePassXC 2.5
It's just a HTML export, nothing particularly special.
AdamGibbins··on KeePassXC 2.5
Keepass uses .NET, so is dependant on the mono framework etc on non-Windows.

KeepassX is no longer maintained.

KeepassXC is maintained and more featured, it's also not dependant on .NET.

AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
I am a customer, I run a bunch of personal sites and hobby projects. updown.io is wonderfully cheap, the pay as you go model is perfect for my monitoring needs. I have no need for the stats, just the monitoring which it does well.
AdamGibbins··on DuckDuckGo's traffic keeps growing
I've replaced my usage of DDG sadly, with startpage, I get superior results. Found myself way too often prefixing queries with !g especially for technical or localised (UK) stuff.
AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: Feasible Alternative to the MacBook Pro?
> the XPS's camera is placed at the bottom of the screen instead of at the top, so people you have video calls with look up your nostrils.

This is no longer the case in the latest gen, they've placed it back at the top on a very thin bezel still.

AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
Reduces surface area of attack, you never know when a 0day is going to be found. Exposing monitoring/metrics is particularly interesting as it exposes a lot of information to an attacker, if they're trying to starve your machine of a resource or whatever.
AdamGibbins··on Ask HN: What are some well-designed, but less well-known native Mac apps?
